This video is A GODSEND! My friend had bought a Ps3 that worked when tested in the store, but not at home, we thought it could be so many things causing the issue, since it wouldn't display an image or connect to her tv. But this video, showing me how to take apart the Ps3 not only helped me clean mine, but also hers that I bought off her, and now it works!! Thank you so much dude.
I was afraid to open and clean my ps3 although it had (i suspect) heat problems. Thanks to your tutorial I managed to properly do it, and even went a little further and replaced the thermal paste. Thanks a lot, sincerely!
Just completed cleaning it. Pretty good guide, however, there are a couple things I want to point out. Removing the decorative front plastic is easier to lift from the side as you did and use a plastic spudger at the back (closest to the disc drive) to disengage the tabs as you slide it to the left. The other thing I want to point out is at the end of the teardown you state that the board is glued in place and users shouldn’t proceed any further. This is incorrect. The board is held by thermal paste and users who are experiencing loud fan noise should remove this cover, clean the old (and probably ineffective) thermal paste from the chip and heat pipe with at least 91% isopropyl alcohol, and apply fresh paste making sure to cover the entire main chip as well as the smaller chip before reassembling the unit. Old, hard, and ineffective thermal paste, as well as a dirty clogged heatsink, are the most common problems that cause over-heating and a loud fan
Thanks for this video! I followed your instructions and was able to fully clean an old PS3 super slim. Removing the front plastic cover was by far the trickiest bit.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I couldn’t believe how much dust and grime was built up inside my ps3… no wonder it was having such a hard time! Never again…. That baby is getting regular cleanings from now on. Big props on adding the reassembly bit at the end, a lot of people don’t do that and I’m always stuck watching the video backwards and hoping I’m not left with extra screws at the end.
@Vigerp Thank you so much for the tutorial. My PS3's fan was spinning at full speed even when not playing a game, so I assumed that it was overheating and needed a clean. Thanks to your tutorial, I managed to take it apart, give it a good blast with compressed air and put it back together again (sometimes where it all goes to pot!). The fan is now running normally and my PS3 sounds healthy again.
Wow my friend!!! Your PS3 is extremely clean!! Also I love just how gentle you are being with removing each component!!! Kudos and will be watching and doing mine cuz I’ve had it since 2013 and have cleaned it out but haven’t replaced the thermal paste!!! Excellent tutorial!!! 👍🏻🙌👏👏

Great video, thanks for making it. However, 18:20 - When you say there's no reason to go beyond this, there is. The logic board comes out relatively easily and you'll then have access to your thermal paste/compound. My PS3 Super Slim hadn't been opened since I purchased it in 2013, and the thermal paste was completely dry. Ordered some Arctic paste from Amazon and am hoping to give the heat management components a boost! I've got an issue where the system freezes while trying to join GTA V online, so this is one attempt at trying to get it to work. Failing that I think it'll be a 'database rebuild'... or an upgrade to PS4 Pro at a later date.
You are absolutely correct. Changing the thermal paste is always a great thing to do. When I made this video, my idea was to create an easy tutorial for people with very limited knowledge of electronics. For that reason I didn't go further into the console. I was afraid that a lot of people would do an improper job, or (in worst case scenario) not apply thermal paste at all. I should've made it clear that people should always change the thermal paste when taking a system apart, and made a separate video on that specific topic. I've learned a lot from my old videos, and it is this kind of feedback that will make my future videos even better. Thank you so much, Jonny! I hope you get to enjoy GTA V soon. :D

@@Vigerp after i click my ps3 red button to green 5 or 6 seconds after it powers off. It looks kind of dirty on the inside you think it has anything to do with it.
First of all, I apologize for the late reply. I've been too busy moving, so I took a break from RUclips. Now, as for your question: That does sound like it is overheating, yes. Cleaning it should hopefully help to let the hot air circulate out of your console.
As you adviced not to take it apart any further (because the fan was 'glued on'), I didn't plan to. But it came off all on its own..only held together by the thermal paste. Can never hurt to replace it when you get this far inside the PS3. Great tutorial nevertheless! Couldn't have done it without it.
Yeah, I should've been more precise. I made the tutorial with complete beginners in mind, and so using the word "glued" seemed the most appropriate. Basically, I wanted people to leave the thermal paste alone, as if it is done incorrectly it would cause the whole system to malfunction. Basically, I didn't want people to constantly comment about how their systems were destroyed in the cleaning process. However, I am glad you seem to know what you were doing, and you are absolutely right. The best cause of action is to replace the thermal paste, whenever you open up a console.
Vigerp Ah I see. But that beginner friendly approach can cause problems too. Removing the metal plate from the motherboard can break the thermal paste seal (happened to me). Beginner or not, everyone should reapply thermal paste when that happens.
I do have another video ready that I am going to upload tonight, which shows how to reapply thermal paste, but it is not the focus of the video. I'll make a dedicated video on just thermal pasting.
This video is no nonsense and very helpful. I bought a ps3 super slim really cheap that was too loud and needed a serious deep clean. Two things I want to say though - 1) when you tell me to throw some plastic parts in soapy water, I wish you also told me how to dry them. I'm probably going to wait until tomorrow morning to put this back together. It's mid winter in the northeast US and I still feel like putting it back together right now would lead to serious moisture problems - I also don't have a hair dryer because I wasn't a teenager in the 1980s 2) Even though the "heat layer" is glued to the motherboard... it's almost ten years later since ps3 super slim launched. I would like, subscribe, promulgate and possibly fellate a channel that gave specific instructions on how to disassemble, clean, refresh the thermal paste etc, really getting into factory restoration hard core. I came here because I needed to know how it was built, not because I was afraid if I broke it, it wouldn't be covered under warranty. Break the glue and tell us how to fix it later
Will do. I promise to be more clear in future videos, and to cover specific topics in their own videos for easy access. Thank you for the constructive criticism and feedback. ❤️
Personally I prefer Sony over Microsoft. They make it very intuitive where all the screws go, and they also mark them with arrows. Xbox machines have lots of little plastic tabs that often break off. But yeah, I know what you mean.
its a joke? the original XBOX is one of the easiest console to open, 360 FAT was a little tricky with the case but the rest is so easy. XBOX 360 SLIM, XBOX ONE and ONE S are super easy to open, clean and change thermal paste, also are well desing so dont gonna overheat ever. SONY consoles are a mess inside with a lot of ribbon cables, and the thermals are the worst
Oh man, wanted to clean up the fan and radiator (maybe put fresh thermalpaste).. but seeing so much trouble I am now regretting I've done this at home (currentyl at work, watching why after taking top off it looked like it was impossible). Damn! I will just do what you did then, thanks for those instructions!
I actually broke off a connection housing and was panicking a little when he said we weren't able to get to the circuit board. Then, I lifted it up and the thing just fell out. Shoddy work but at least I can fix my problem.
Today, 06/02/23 will be the first time ever I clean my PS3. I can't believe how that thing still runs games smoothly, even with all that dust inside. Wish me luck.
Thank you so much!!! I have had the same ps3 since they first came out and never knew how to clean it! The poor thing was suffocated in dust! She is running better than ever now! 🤩
I've never tried to use Hydrogen Peroxide as a cleaning agent, but after researching it, it seems to be a very efficient glass cleaner. The only thing I would be concerned about is that you would have to be very thorough in drying of all the moisture, since H2O2 would not evaporate at room temperature like isopropyl alcohol.
This is the first video I've seen where someone actually showed how to remove the top side covers properly. Except I would use a plastic tool to for any prying rather than a metal flat head screwdriver.
Thank you so much for this video, I bought a used super slim and used this video to fix a messed up optical drive cable, replace the cpu shielding because the old one was extremely rusty and swapped in a new shell.
@@Vigerp I do notice it still gets pretty hot on the side with the fan. I wasn't able to get all the dust out at the fan. Would that be the cause of the heat?
@@RyanSheriff Most likely, yes. You should have noticed a drop in the temperature after your cleaning, though. If not, it is possible that it is overheating due to some other issue.
Removing ribbon cables are not very difficult. You just got to be careful not to damage them or pinch them too hard. Typically, if you are using your hands you will have no problems. Just don't try using screwdrivers or pliers for extra leverage. However, any cleaning is better than no cleaning. :)
You got it right thing...sir in step by step tutorial servicing,I like the way you discuss on how to and out on to.butone thing that I recall...sir the last part of taking out the blower fan for the processor, this is the only step tutorial and you decide to put all together...and that's it.i hope you got my point!thank you so much for everything you shared in this video.
Don't worry. It's not that difficult, really. The hardest part is organizing the screws, so just take several reference pictures along the way. That will help you tremendously. Also, while it is best to go through the entire console and clean everything, there is no law that says you have to. Just go as deep down into it as you feel comfortable with. Remember that any cleaning is better than no cleaning. As you clean your console on a more regular basis, you will start to feel more comfortable, and you will soon be able to clean every part easily. You got this. :)
Great.. Saved my "new" ps3.. Got it for 25 bucks. Installed HEN and Multiman. Added thermal paste too and the machine is like new.. No overheating of fan noise at all... Schweeet :)
new subscriber.....i just watched this video and followed along and it was the first time i've taken anything apart and it was a success !!!!...thanks again and look forword to your next video
I have absolutely no luck with Sony consoles. I always cleaned my consoles myself. Modded my two OG 2002 Xbox consoles, reapplied the thermal grease and all, did the same with the 360 and its annoying X-Clamps. Still I could never finish the job with a Sony console. My CECHE01 Fat PS3 worked perfectly until I got scared of a possible YLOD and tried to open it to clean and change the thermal grease. Managed to destroy the power button ribbon cable and forgot to screw a looot of screws. In the end it wasn't working anymore. Then something super similar happened to my PS3 Slim, except for the fact it was already bad, I just finished killing it. Left a lot of screws out too. By the looks of this video (super informative though) this Super Slim model is the hardest of the bunch to disassemble. Holy f*, too many plastic tabs and fragile pieces that I would 100% break. Even though I want to clean and replace this PS3s thermal grease, I'll probably pass it. I can open and mess with any other piece of electronic except for Sony video-game consoles. They're built so differently it looks it was made to never be opened. Sad.
For me it is the opposite. I prefer Sony consoles over Microsoft. If you look closely, you'll see that Sony actually marks the location of when and where a lot of the screws go. This is indicated by arrows molded into the plastic and casing itself.
AAAAA Thank you so much for this entire video! I finally cleaned 8 years worth of dust in my console! I'm seeing the comments who don't really want to go through with this but if you're truly passionate about something, you should have the time and effort to make it happen. I even passed up the video about just vacuuming it. But with this, I got dust and dirt in places vacuums can't even get to! So thank you so much for this video again! Do you have a video for the controllers too?
Bruh wtf are you talking about? That "glue" that keeps the cooler stuck to the motherboard is thermal paste and it absolutely should be and is recommended to be changed, especially at this point years after the console was made. Changing the thermal paste is a huge help in making sure the console lasts a long time and the fan doesn't get so loud, and you don't have overheating issues.
If you want to change thermal paste you need to take the mother board off from the fan ect. And it is not clued together but there is couple metal things that keep the board on the fan base, but it comes off easily.
That would be the disc reader *eject* ribbon. Make sure you buy one for the PS3 Super Slim. Not Slim or Fat. I can't remember right now if it is the same ribbon cable used for all models, so make sure you buy for the model you own. :)
Thanks so much! I did have to go even deeper though (and so compliment this with another video) because when I got it in 2014 it was already second hand & I had to change the thermal paste. So as others have mentioned, maybe do another video on that: if you go this far, you can go even further. My PS3 is now silent and runs beautifully, so thanks again.
i learned alot... like how the panel on the side comes off and reveals the empty hole under the disk area. guess ill be need ing to get the required hardware to fill it lol thanks!

Cleaning it should hopefully help to let the hot air circulate out of your console.
diy screwdriver hack: you can use an appropriately-sized flat head screwdriver to remove the hex screws on this PS3 model.
That is true, but it has to be the exact size. Otherwise you might end up stripping the hex screws.
@@Vigerp I ended up breaking that little dot in the middle and it almost hit my eye, bruh.
Thanks so much I was going to quit because I didn't have the hex screw
@@lime_4859 did you get it? My flatheads wont work, I'm finna just cut the plactic out from around each lol, so I can grab with pliers
@@chrislahay7086 mine worked with flathead
I'll make a dedicated video on just thermal pasting.
thanks man, this video is very detailed, as soon as my new cover plates come in I'll clean out my ps3, and repaint it while I'm at it
This video is no nonsense and very helpful. I bought a ps3 super slim really cheap that was too loud and needed a serious deep clean. Two things I want to say though -
1) when you tell me to throw some plastic parts in soapy water, I wish you also told me how to dry them. I'm probably going to wait until tomorrow morning to put this back together. It's mid winter in the northeast US and I still feel like putting it back together right now would lead to serious moisture problems - I also don't have a hair dryer because I wasn't a teenager in the 1980s
2) Even though the "heat layer" is glued to the motherboard... it's almost ten years later since ps3 super slim launched.
Thx, after aplying this guide to my super slim, it becomes a ps5
This PS3 is probably the worst console to take apart it's a pain in the ass.
The xbox is a pain in the ass
@@SiliconPower74 shut up Xbox lover
@@SiliconPower74 lol you clearly do not own any pc mate
Oh man, wanted to clean up the fan and radiator (maybe put fresh thermalpaste).. but seeing so much trouble I am now regretting I've done this at home (currentyl at work, watching why after taking top off it looked like it was impossible). Damn! I will just do what you did then, thanks for those instructions!
Best of luck to you. You can do this. Just take your time and be patient. :)
I actually broke off a connection housing and was panicking a little when he said we weren't able to get to the circuit board. Then, I lifted it up and the thing just fell out. Shoddy work but at least I can fix my problem.
What a legend. Brilliant tutorial! Cheers mate
Thank you so much. I am happy to have been able to help you out. =)
My ps3 wasn't playing blu ray or games. Cleaning the lens with a Q-tip and peroxide worked for me. It really helped.!
My pleasure.
I got the slim model since 2012 and is really really quiet! I guess the slim is way better than the super slim
I prefer the Slim myself. Never liked the sliding lid mechanism of the Super Slim.
Thanks for your help, I bought a PS3 super slim that was really dusty and was able to clean it and it works great.
My pleasure.
I just cleaned mine today with the help of your video. Thanks man!
Wow did not want to go past the taking off of the ribbons, but hopefully my Xpower blower did enough.
You're welcome. I try to make it easy to follow, and I really appreciate all the comments. 😃
4:30 you can also use a small *Flathead Screwdriver*
Nope, doesn't work for me.
@@DBZ0wnz it does work but you might need a smaller size
“This is a hollow tip” ......... *me with phone and wallet in hand* : Oh. That.
damnit lol literally just happened to me
It looks so hard to do ! I’m super nervous to clean mine even though it’s starting to lag and I know I should ://
Don't worry. :)
Vigerp Thankyou so much!! I really appreciate your support and help:)
Anyone else find dents in their system where there shouldnt be...? Thanks for the guide it really helped me get through it.👍
Thank you so much, man. I'm glad I could help you out. And no, I find dents all over all the time! LOL
Thank you so much dude. Now i can feel like a teenager again xD
best tutorial , perfectly explained - thanks for that, my playstaition no longer sounds like an airbus just louder
That makes me happy! Thank you for the kind words. 😁
Great.. Saved my "new" ps3.. Got it for 25 bucks. Installed HEN and Multiman. Added thermal paste too and the machine is like new.. No overheating of fan noise at all... Schweeet :)
Thank you so much. I haven't cleaned the lass in forever.

Second time using this. Super helpful, specially the reassembly. Thanks 👍
great video, plain and straight forward explanation
9:36 I was hoping you'd say that cos I didn't wanna come to see you talk 33 mins about the top..
You're welcome. However, if there are people who would be interested in taking the top apart, I'll do a seperate tutorial like I said.
This video was a godsend, thank you so much
Thank you for this video! I was able to replace the part that I needed to replace and clean my ps3.
You know what I dont mind the noise now
Have to wait until payday to try this again so I can get the correct size hex screw. Lowest I have is a t8.
great work dude
take my like bro
*Yoink*
Thank you so much. :D
Never tried this I wanted to but dont have the tools regardless this was very educational
This is indicated by arrows molded into the plastic and casing itself.
if the tutorial is 30 minutes, it takes me 2 hours. will, 2 hours later and my ps3 is as clean as i can get it :) thank you!
My pleasure!
Thank you for this! Super helpful for my husband to take ours apart to clean 💚
Yes it's worth it to clean a Playstation 3 super slim clean all the dust from the vents the fan so the console does not over heat
You Sir, are a life saver..
many, many thanks for posting this vid.....
You are welcome, sir.
Thanks a lot, my ps3 has been sounding like a jet engine for a while now
My pleasure.
Give this man a cookie!
I will treat myself to some cookies later this evening. Thank you.
🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
If you want to change thermal paste you need to take the mother board off from the fan ect. And it is not clued together but there is couple metal things that keep the board on the fan base, but it comes off easily.
I'm staring to take apart my ps3 step by step just like you did thanks brother good job 👍
@28:33 The shorter ribbon cable what is it exactly called? I need that part replaced.
It may be a lot useful if you include list of tools in the beginning. Occasionally i got hex screwdriver, but who knows i need hollow one?
Thank you. That is an excellent point! I will do that from now on. :)
i learned alot... like how the panel on the side comes off and reveals the empty hole under the disk area.
guess ill be need ing to get the required hardware to fill it lol
thanks!
Wow nice vid , especially how to put it back together.. amazing.
There should be a cleaning service check your local listings there's bound to be at least 1
My 2009 ps3 Slim seems to showing signs of dying and I'm planning to replace it with this and a 2tb SSD to make it run like a dream (and hopefully the rumors that the ps5 can play all generations of PlayStation games is true because that'll be a dream and majorly convenient)
That would be a dream, but sadly it seems like the PS5 will only be PS4 compatible. At least that is the rumors that I am hearing.
