I tried both of those before I ended up using Lunch Money. A huge unfixable bug on my Monarch account made me ditch the service. Lunch money is also cheaper
I am all for you expanding about your two budgeting apps in a future video! I use YNAB daily and love it but I am always curious about other apps and their features.
Love seeing smaller channels talk budget and finance. Great work! I use YNAB and it has been a life changer. The way it tracks your credit cards as you spend is amazing. My biggest struggle to start was that they don’t let you put your paycheck in early. I thought it was weird at the time, but 6 months later, I don’t want it to be any other way.
@@erickanash6405 If you're still looking into budgeting, YNAB has a bunch of resources for HOW to budget. Of course they will use their app to show you, but the principles can be applied to other apps (or even a spreadsheet). The user groups on almost any social are top tier for Q/A. The enthusiastic fan base is always willing to help.
I really appreciate your in depth review of each app regardless of where they're going on your tier list. It makes it easier to understand what the flaws are for each app.
@ I took your recommendation and downloaded Copilot. I was able to spend a significant chunk of my morning and really look through my different accounts to help create a realistic budget. It’s so incredibly helpful to see it all laid out for me, and I can’t wait to see the impact it has on my spending moving forward. Thank you again!
I'm a staunch YNAB supporter so I was a little sad that it wasn't S tier :(. But I love the way you ended the video saying the best app is the one you'll use; I love budgeting and have been interested in trying Monarch (heard many good things), but I *just* got my partner to start budgeting in YNAB and he's really found his feet. Switching up our app could mess that up... so YNAB is S-tier in our hearts
I promise not to to hold your affection for YNAB against you :). It's a solid app, but just fell short of top tier in my humble opinion. At the end of the day, as long as it's S tier in your hearts and minds (and helps your partner stick to a budget! :) ) that's all that matters! Thanks for the note and all the best to you!
LOVED this video - fantastic job and spot on! When I saw the video was 26 minutes, thought there is no way I'm watching the whole thing - but it was so engaging! I went with Monarch due to his advice and love it! (PS I told my team that we need to hire this guy!)
Hi Denise! Thanks for such a generous compliment and strong vote of confidence! Glad you found the video engaging despite its length and volume of information! I think you'll love Monarch - I'm finding that setting up the rules can seem endless, but once a handful of rules are in place it gives great info about current and projected spending! Have a great week and happy budgeting! :)
This is the best video I've watched re: budgeting and tracking apps. Thank you for being so thorough. It's obvious that you are not trying to sell us anything.
Thanks so much for the feedback! I really try not to let my biases creep in (although m sure they do at least a little), so I’m glad to hear it came across that way!
Thank you for this video! I have been using YNAB for years, but the price is increasing again. I love zero-based budgeting, so I came to your video for alternatives. I appreciate the options.
This video is so good. Super informative. No BS. Really well done. I thought you were going to have millions of subscribers. Well, you just gained one more! Thank you, good sir.

Wonderful! It was straight to the point and answered every question I had on the apps listed without me having to create my own spreadsheet (I love my spreadsheets lol) You've earned a subscriber! Thanks for the high effort, quality content.
Wonderful! I was using Ynab but needed to let that go because it was TOO MUCH effort. lol I don't have 50 mins to figure out a budget every week. I'll look into monarch and copilot. Thank you. I'd also like to see a comparison video for those two
I just did a couple budget app comparisons on my own, and I wish I'd found your channel sooner, because this was insanely helpful. I'd love to see a video on Monarch vs Copilot!
I think you should do another video and go over which FREE app is the best. I'm not talking about any apps with free trials. I know a lot of these apps have free versions, but you can only do so much with the free version. So with that being said, I want to know which app is the best to download and use for a year+ thats free? I had a hard time figuring that out when I watched your video. I do want to mention that I really enjoyed your video and watched every second of it. Thank you for providing excellent quality content.
Appreciate the note! Definitely considering doing a free app review. The completely free apps are a whole different game because they rely on ads and/or your data to make money. But if viewers are interested in that topic, I'd be happy to dig in!!
Loved this video! I’m interested in the comparison between Monarch and Co-Pilot. My husband and I have been budgeting using spreadsheets, but it’s time to start doing some automated expense tracking. We’re curious how you’re feeling after a few months!
Thanks for both great info and making me laugh. Your videos are so good! Would love to see another video once you have more info on Monarch & Copilot as learn more about them and which you like best. Great video!
Thanks for the feedback! Glad you found some value in the video. Monarch v Copilot testing is underway. A head to head video will be in the works soon! Have a great day!
I'm not a huge Ramsey fan and take certain aspects of their messaging with a grain of salt. I do however love Every Dollar. Some of what were considered downsides in the video are upsides to me - especially the requirement to manually track expenses to a category. I get why some people automate their budgets, but for me, the act of looking at every expense helps me to be intentional about all of my financial decisions. I know exactly what I'm spending money on and don't have anything that slides by like it might with an automated system.
All good! I'm glad it works for you and those manual entries definitely help reinforce the process. Certainly great for some people and exactly what they need - nothing will slide past, which is great!
Hi. I'm a Ramsey follower yet I find your opinion of the app helpful because I need an app that best suits my needs and that price point doesn't work for me. Thanks. I'll continue watching now. Thanks for your research. Would you do a video that shows a chart where these apps can all be compared?
Glad you found it helpful, and thanks for leaving a note! You can find a tier list ranking chart with all 23 apps toward the end of the video. Hope that helps!!
Well done! Just a suggestion .. it would have been useful to state whether or not each app was Android, Apple, or both in the intro to the app. I was excited about a few, only to find they are only for Apple devices. :(
@@BirchFinance I am a current Every Dollar Cult member ever since Mnvelopes went by the wayside, but I've been looking for something to track spending at a more granular level. Still in the setup phase.
Thank you for this video and your exceptional dry humor. When you said every dollar at the end there for a moment being your everyday financial app after ripping into it had me crying in laughter! Thank you for that😂
Since you weren't able to get into Oportun I thought I'd leave a quick comment about it I've been using Oportun for years (since it was called Digit). I have loved the app, but it's not really for budgeting more for savings goals! It will take out based on your goals and how much money is in your account - so be careful right after you get paid, if you have a lot of money in your account it will take out a lot more. However, you can pause the withdrawals and it is super easy to transfer money back to your account! You essentially add how much you want to save and by which date. Note, that because it's based on how much money you have in your account you don't always reach the goal by the date, however I hardly notice the money going out so it's almost like an online piggy bank.
Awesome breakdown of the app, Courtney! Thanks for shedding some light on how the app works! Sounds like socking away money is a breeze, and the ability to pause the withdrawals was not a feature I was able to find when I dug around the interwebs. Appreciate you taking the time to fill in those information gaps. Have a great day and you're welcome around this neck of the woods any time!
Hey! Apologies for not responding - YT didn't notify me of your question! I must say, I'm heavily leaning toward Copilot at this point; however, testing is still underway. If it works with your budget Copilot or Monarch are great choices.
Awesome! Hope you dig it as much as I have the past couple months! I’d love to hear about your experience using it if you care to share. I’m currently putting together the framework for the next video. Cheers!
Well done with this! Much appreciated! It's crazy how overly-complicated (and wallet-siphoning) most budgeting apps are. While the top (S-rank) apps should fill the gap for me, I still feel like an elegant, simple solution is missing. As a software engineer, I'm having one of those "hold my beer" moments 😂 Who knows, maybe you'll have another app to add to your list for 2025.
Hey Austin, thanks so much for the kind words! It really is insane how messy some of the apps are. I’d be happy to hold your beer while you whip up solution to this problem. Let me know when you’re done and I’ll help you get the word out! 👍🍻
This is one of the best produced videos I have ever seen on a RUclips account with under 2k subscribers. Well done! If you increase your posting frequency, I think you could really grow your channel!
Hey Tyler, thanks so much! It was a beast to research & make so it’s encouraging to hear when it’s received well. Appreciate you leaving the feedback! More content is on the way! One brick at a time.
After looking into 8 apps I had narrowed it down to Monarch & Copilot but there’s so many apps I wasn’t sure if I should keep looking. While this video did save me a lot of time, I would’ve liked a chapter list to quickly compare specific apps. Any timeline on that Monarch V Copilot showdown?
You're absolutely right, I need to add those chapter markers. On the to-do list! Thanks for the feedback! Still testing Monarch and Copilot, but hope to shoot and publish that video soon!
Wow. I just came across your channel, and thank you for the information you uploaded. You have a great speaking voice, the graphics were nice, and the the video was actually informative. Definitely keep going on this channel. Subscribed.
Great video! I made sure to subscribe under both my personal and work accounts lol. I also would love to see a head to head between Monarch and Co-Pilot
YNAB for the win. Looking forward to seeing other options that may be better and possibly less spendy. However, at 8 or 9 bucks a month, YNAB isn't unreasonable for what it gives you.

Great information Birch, I came for the apps reviews and I am going with Copilot, but I have to ask, what software did you use to edit/build your videos? or do you have someone doing it for you? I really enjoy the video and I got really curious! thank you!
I think you'll really enjoy Copilot, but no need to rush the decision with 2 months free trial! As for the videos, I use FCPX and do all the editing myself. I'm still pretty slow, but trying to improve bit by bit with each video. I lean on motionvFX plugins for some of the more whiz-bang graphics. Thanks for noticing and happy budgeting my friend!
Very funny, instant like. I really dug into dave ramsey stuff to get my mindset straight and finances in order, but after losing Mint as my favorite budget app I fell onto everydollar and have wanted something better ever since. Especially once I was downgraded to the free version after 3 months of premium from going through their FPU course. Ill be watching the Monarch vs copilot video next and may even try out the free app on the S teir as I dont like to subscribe to many things.
Thanks for the note and glad to hear you enjoyed the video! I think there are a few great alternatives to everydollar. Would love to hear what you end up landing on - at the end of the the day, it's whatever works best for your situation!
This video is super helpful, the only thing that concerns me is the data access you’re giving these applications. Having an app with less features to have more data privacy would be an acceptable trade off. Thanks again for the great insight!
Very high quality video Birch, loved that little skit at the beginning it hooks the viewer in perfectly. I like to go old school and just manually type my expenses and revenue on apple notes with + or - then just add it all up and organize on Google sheets monthly😅👍.
Subscribed to your channel based on this video. I wish your chart showed teh app name, not just the icon, but I guess people might skip over the video if it was that easy. Just a note.
Totally agree. That very idea dawned on me a few weeks after I uploaded the video and I was kicking myself for not making it easier for the viewer. Happy to have you on the team and I appreciate the feedback!
Thanks, this video helped me make a decision. I wanted to see if there was an app that takes care of all my needs and turns out its good old MS Excel haha

When you said every dollar at the end there for a moment being your everyday financial app after ripping into it had me crying in laughter! Thank you for that😂
Ha! Glad you got a chuckle from it, Josh! Gotta keep the "riveting" topic of budget apps light! 😆
Since you weren't able to get into Oportun I thought I'd leave a quick comment about it
I've been using Oportun for years (since it was called Digit).
Super helpful and informative video! Four months later, have you been leaning more toward Monarch or Copilot?
Glad it was helpful! I'll be pushing out the comparison video soon - in production as we speak!
Great video the only thing missing would be mentioning what apps have desktop or web versions too.
Agreed! Wish I could have added a few more details about each app, but hopefully it was enough to get you pointed in the right direction
Yes please! Which one of the two would you recommend someone go with?
Hey! Apologies for not responding - YT didn't notify me of your question! I must say, I'm heavily leaning toward Copilot at this point; however, testing is still underway. If it works with your budget Copilot or Monarch are great choices.
@@BirchFinance awesome! Me too! I'll get the free trial and I look forward to your next video!
Awesome! Hope you dig it as much as I have the past couple months! I’d love to hear about your experience using it if you care to share. I’m currently putting together the framework for the next video. Cheers!
Went looking for the copilot vs monarch comparison. did you end up doing one? Which did you end up going with?
Research is done! Video is in production, my friend! 👊 I don’t want to spill the beans, but I went with the app that’s 2nd letter is O 🤫
@@BirchFinance Will do! 😁
It would be good to have a list of apps you mentioned in the video description
💯
Subscribed.
Hey, thanks so much! Really appreciate you stopping to drop this note! Welcome to the team, and more content is on the way!
Great video! I made sure to subscribe under both my personal and work accounts lol. I also would love to see a head to head between Monarch and Co-Pilot
Wow, double sub, thanks so much! The head to head video is under construction and on the way! Have a great day!
YNAB for the win.
Looking forward to seeing other options that may be better and possibly less spendy. However, at 8 or 9 bucks a month, YNAB isn't unreasonable for what it gives you.
Glad it works for you! Stick to what works 👍✅
Amazing video, I've subbed and shared!
Awesome! Glad you liked it! 👊👍
@@BirchFinance dude, "liked" barely scratches the surface. The quality was phenomenal!!! I hope your channel really takes off, it would be well deserved!
@@TheSnowflakemt Really appreciate that, dude! Just trying to create the best content within my abilities - very surprised by the large positive response thus far! Thanks for your support!!
Very informative video; covered a lot of ground in a clear, concise way. Much appreciated!
Thanks so much! Glad you found it helpful and appreciate you stopping to leave the note! 🙏👍
This video and channel is 10/10. Excellent stuff
Damn Anthony, much appreciated. More attempts at excellence on the way!
Was researching budgeting apps and came across this video.
Concise yet detailed information, incredible editing, and great visuals.
Well done. You deserve more subscribers!
Thanks so much! Appreciate you taking a moment to let me know 🙏 Glad you stumbled across the channel and welcome to the team!
Super appreciate the unbiased thoughts. Any updates on what you like now between Copilot and Monarch?
Man, so neck and neck. Depends on your needs. But just between you and me - recently I've been SLIGHTLY more drawn to check in on my budget with Copilot.
Hey are you not making any more videos? I so looked forward to them.
The channel is still alive and well! It's just been a very busy last few months so I haven't been able to make any videos. Thanks for the support and more videos are on the way!!! 😊
Will you recommend a personal finance book? Most books I’ve looked at are overly simple or contain too many stories.
Both of these are great..I've read them and found them very helpful.

Extremely well done and helpful! Thank you!
@@jenovationmusic Thanks so much; glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate the note!
Love this video! Thanks so much for your thorough review!!
So glad to hear! Thanks for leaving the kind note - more videos on the way!! ✅
Amazing production. Great job.
Thanks so much! 🙏
Excellent video! Very useful, and editing is top-notch.
Thanks Tae! Glad you thought so. Appreciate you stopping by to leave that note! Love your channel.
Loved this video. Super helpful. Great editing. And you’re handsome and easy to listen to! 🎉 winner 🎉
Thanks for the note! And so glad to hear you found the info so helpful! 😊🏆
Great work putting this together
Thanks, appreciate it! 🙏
Neat. How many of these work with European banks?
Great question. Unsure exactly which ones. Any specific app in mind?
We need that side by side comparrision between Monarch and Copilot please!
Absolutely! Coming soon! ✅👍
This video is super helpful, the only thing that concerns me is the data access you’re giving these applications. Having an app with less features to have more data privacy would be an acceptable trade off. Thanks again for the great insight!
Always a tough trade-off. Take another look at Todays Budget App ... no bank connectivity, fewer features, but amazing interface!
Another great video with valuable information! Great job Birch Finance!
Thanks so much! 😁
Excellent video, thank you for the hard work making it easy for me . Subscribed!
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! Welcome to the team!
I was really waiting to hear you mention Empower budgeting app.
It was certainly in the running! I just felt Empower was geared more toward retirement/investing rather than day-to-day budgeting.
Very high quality video Birch, loved that little skit at the beginning it hooks the viewer in perfectly. I like to go old school and just manually type my expenses and revenue on apple notes with + or - then just add it all up and organize on Google sheets monthly😅👍.
Thanks man! Glad that skit came across okay - was nervous about how it would play. Love the old school mentality! Whatever works!! 👊💰
Lmao the guitar disappearing. Great content. Great editing. You deserve a bigger following, keep it up.
😆 Thanks so much! Appreciate you stopping in to drop this note. More videos in the way!
Worth the like and sub for sure, thanks you for the video!
Awesome, glad to hear! Welcome to the team!
Thanks for the great video. I’m in Canada and no Copilot darn, so will look at Monarch
Bummer! Hope you like Monarch!!
Great review, thank you!
You're very welcome. Glad you liked it and thanks for the note!
Fantastic video Birch, glad to know that the best app is still my brain 😁
the most powerful tool of all!
Any app able to take email receipts or photos of receipts and read line items to categorize expenses by line-item?
I think those are being phased out in lieu of pulling credit card transactions. I don't think I've come across any of those lately.
Very helpful…if you’re a Mac/ios user from the USA
Point taken. Still around 160 million people
Well done añd explained !,,
Thanks! Appreciate the note!
Thanks, this video helped me make a decision. I wanted to see if there was an app that takes care of all my needs and turns out its good old MS Excel haha
Glad I could help!
Which was it though?
Are all of these apps or do they come with a desktop version/access?
Some have a desktop version, but they are primarily apps first.
Yes please do a direct comparison
On the way my friend! 👍
Great video. Well done.
Thank so much!
I manage my household and both parents and I’m looking for one app to handle 3 accounts so I don’t drop forget a bill. What would work best?
I’d give Monarch a try. Super powerful and can accommodate multiple users.
