    This is great! You have some great advice. My biggest piece of advice is especially in Tokyo, spend some money on your hotel/air B&B so you don’t end up with little friends in your space.
    Also only bring one suitcase. I had multiple suitcases and didn't send out my luggage ahead of time. It was so stressful.

      @@SavvyFaerie yep. Found cockroaches in our air b&b. We left the next morning after getting no sleep and got a room at an APA hotel. It was small, but it was clean, the bathtub was GREAT and we had no unwanted guests! An added bonus was that we were walking distance to a train station.

      Sorry it took so long to get around to this comment. I appreciate you watching. Is it the plane that scares you or the language difference? I think you will get by totally fine so long as you have Google Translate. I was able to communicate with the employees at Japan Post who spoke zero english by just typing in what I needed and showing them my phone. Highly recommend it. Also, Japan is really good about recognizing tourists and sending English speakers to help. Trust me, once you land you're going to get over that anxiousness and have a BLAST! Hope you have a great trip Paul :)

    Really enjoyed this. I laughed when I saw your spreadsheet because I did exactly the same thing and completely overbooked our first trip. For our second trip a few years later, I did cut back significantly (although my husband still felt that it was more regimented than he would like!). But I like to know that the framework is all planned and booked and I don't need to worry about buying train tickets or where I'm going to stay that night. Then I can relax during the day and just take in the sights. The only aspect I think you didn't mention is that Japan is not a country to navigate while trying to haul enormous suitcases. It's a lot better to travel light, for example there isn't room on public transport for really big suitcases. Plus the more you buy, the more you have to carry. I could have bought so much more but couldn't because of a) the weight of having to carry the purchases around the rest of the day, b) the weight limit on suitcases on the flight home, c) room in said suitcases etc. The luggage forwarding service is great, but not every hotel offers that service, and we got stuck in Tokyo when our (not budget) hotel refused to store our cases overnight while we were spending a night at Disney, even though we were booked to come back to that same hotel the following night. There are luggage lockers around Tokyo and in stations but most are too small for big suitcases to fit into and the few bigger lockers were all booked, we dragged our suitcases all around Ueno station for an hour before finally finding lockers in a sub basement area , not fun. I'm interested that you sent boxes home, how did you manage that?

    Just arriving a few months late to this video. . . I have had the chance to visit Japan four times now between a 100% work trip, 50% work trip and two actual trips.
    I def had a detailed spreadsheet with my friend when we went to visit our friend who lived in Kyoto at the time. Thankfully, we controlled ourselves and only allowed 2 things per day that were what we wanted to do. We also had a do nothing day which was good, but we were still hanging out with our friend which really helped. I traveled solo for my 50% work trip and honestly, I was fine with just doing my own thing. I also boldly traveled with my mom when we visited my brother who was working in the Tokyo area at the time.
    I did the small suitcase of clothing in a larger suitcase which was mainly empty the first time. It was okay, but I cheated by leaving the large on in my friend's place. It was a bit much, so the next two times I used a normal sized suitcase and put a duffel bag in. That way when I was coming back, I could shove all my dirty clothes in the duffel bag and all my goodies in the suitcase.
    Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto are all neat, and I've loved going to temples/shrines/museums in all those places, but I've also been able to visit smaller or less popular cities like Shizuoka, Gifu, Nagoya, Koya-san, Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Miyazaki and Aoshima (Kyushu). I personally preferred many of these smaller cities Hiroshima and Kagoshima being my favs as well as the relaxed ocean environment of Aoshima and Miyazaki. Furthermore, these smaller cities are a lot cheaper to visit as the hotel rooms are a bit larger. Another good thing is to hit up the local grocery stores to find whatever produce is in season and if you are someplace like Kyushu not only will you get say, amazing mikans, but they will be half the cost and have more in a bag. My mom was a mikan fiend when we visited in Dec/Jan 2019/2020.
    There are also a lot less tourists in places like Kagoshima and still lots of really neat places to visit like Sengan-en or Sakurajima. I will say though, once you get to the smaller cities, signage and some transit may not have english so knowing a few key kanji came in handy. I was really excited to visit Kyushu and enjoyed visiting it though Hokkaido is my future target for a trip - sometime. . . .

    • @Kimbuucha
      @Kimbuucha  3 года назад

      How lucky were you to be able to go to Japan multiple times?! Can you put me in your suitcase?! Hiroshima is definitely on my list and hope to be able to visit some less popular places. I think for the first trip its common to go to the big 3 but on subsequent trips, do the less popular places. I'll be adding those places to the list. Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it :)

    • @chibivesicle9612
      @chibivesicle9612 3 года назад

      @@Kimbuucha Oh, I certainly have been lucky since things really lined up, especially with the third trip for work. I knew how to navigate after the previous trip with my friends so that really made me feel much more comfortable. I wouldn't have gone most recently if it weren't for the fact my brother had been working there at the time.
      I've see all sorts of opinions on how many places to go as a tourist. For the one trip, my friend and I didn't even bother with Tokyo. We flew into Osaka which I found much less stressful than Narita.
      I know the first time I went to Tokyo, I messed up underestimating how much time it takes to get around. Good or bad, I've adopted the "I must do multiple trips so that I can see all the islands in detail." ^_^;;;
      Good luck planning you next trip!

      Thanks so much for watching. I'd say it really depends on your kids ages and what they like but just off the top of my head, I'd say if they love anime / figurines / arcades and things, research the neighborhood of Akihabara which is great place for that. It's like the mecca for all things anime and nerdy. If they love to shop for fashion, the neighborhood of Shibuya is great for that. Both of those are in Tokyo. There is also Tokyo Disney Sea. Universal Studios is in Osaka and has a huge Harry Potter land from what I hear. And then there is a cool family style indoor onsen in Tokyo (I don't remember the name) . There are also tons of cafes like the Owl Cafe in Tokyo that has live owls. Also I vote for seeing any of the castles, they're really impressive. Himeji was our favorite. There are TONS to do, just depends on you :)

      Head to any Japan Post (the Japanese version of a post office) and you can box up and ship things there. They have everything you need there. You can’t ship liquids though so I recommend just shipping bulky things like clothes or toys. Also there is a value limit so try and keep the value under like $500. We just used Google translate on our phone to communicate with the staff by typing stuff out on our phone and showing it to them. Another place you can use is Yamato (green logo with a black cat).
