My favorite FREE tools for QA Engineers in 2025 💻
Here is a Part I to my absolute favorite tools for QA Engineers. We're not going to talk about enterprise levels apps like Test Rail or Jira, we're going to focus on the ones that help you do your day to day jobs. This includes standalone apps and chrome extensions that'll help make your QA tasks more organized and efficient, as well as help you grow and sharpen your testing skills. These are tools that have helped me organize my work, stay focused on tasks, become more technically proficient and even test faster.

    Are you a manual QA or Automation QA? Would you consider becoming a software engineer? Are you good at math? I’m a QA Engineer and got the position unconventionally. I’ve done quite a bit of learning in my own and have a long way to go. What do you do to stay sharp? How does one build tests during development if I don’t know what the developers are talking about?

    • @Kimbuucha
      @Kimbuucha 4 дня назад

      @@niawingard9895 my job now is a bit different but my last role was heavy on automation. I do has an MS in computer science so I do have a background in math (although I didn’t use much advanced math for automation to be honest). To stay sharp I’d listen to QA podcasts and look for ways to enhance my code or automate things that were hard. Usually that led to learning new tools or ways to write code. To build out tests during development get really friendly with your dev team and talk through your goal and they can probably help you get started or lend technical support. If you don’t know what the devs are talking about that’s the first step. Understand how your software works, how your front end and backend work, things like that. I’d recommend just booking some time with a dev and telling them you’re trying to learn more about how things work and I’m sure they’d be more than happy to show you and break it down so you can start to understand 🙂

      @ I’m taking a basic SQL course from Udemy right now. I studied a little about SQL back in my QA bootcamp, but I’m trying to keep building on my current skills as I did really bad on technical quiz related to SQL during my recent interview for an entry level QA role. How important do you think SQL skills are for QA (in comparison to automation and other testing skills) and are there particular SQL techniques that are crucial to QA roles and you would recommend learning?

      @Kimbuucha Месяц назад

      Thanks so much for watching! I'm glad it was helpful. I realize I haven't uploaded any QA videos in a while, my new job has been pretty busy but I'm hoping to get some out soon (after recording and editing them of course). For the interview, yes I generally ask what the process is upfront, and ask them what their technical round looks like. If they mention that its live coding, uses a coder pad, etc I generally let them know I don't think I would be a good fit for the role. If its a company I'm really interested in though, I might ask if they make exceptions and allow take home exercises. The worst they can say is no. Hope that helps :D

    Thanks for making this. As a Mac user, it can be hard to find cute lil cozy games that I haven't tried already. I love my Stardew and Unpacking, but I can only do so much of the same things. Although I do find myself returning to Stardew often. Of all the games I've played that aren't on this list, I would also recommend Scarlet Hollow. I think the closest game I'd compare it to is similar to Life Is Strange. It is a visual novel style game, but you get to pick your character traits, which all have unique impacts on dialogue/social interactions and relationships, and your choices do have consequences, so there is a good amount of replayability. I have played through to the end of Chapter 4. This is in early access, and they just wrapped production on the other game they were working on, so they have a clear gameplan of when Chapter 5 will be completed. The art style and vibe is kind of horrorish, and there are some supernatural elements to this storyline as well. The characters feel fleshed out and interesting. The art style is distinct from other games I've played, and I like the balance of choice, consequence, and mystery in this game. I currently have two saves going, and I haven't found it super predictable, so I do feel they've done a decent job in making the story in various paths remain interesting and engaging. I would also give a special shoutout to Strange Horticulture. I wouldn't place it up in the same league as Scarlet Hollow, but there are choices and consequences and whatnot, a bit of a mysterious vibe, and it's a cute little cozy game that isn't super challenging, but still challenging enough. This game has 8 different endings in total, and I have played through all of them multiple times. I still go back and play it even though I've long passed the point of 100% on Steam for that game, but it's kind of a comfort game for me. I would say it's good for content creators who stream and need a fun little not-too-intense but still Halloweenish game for October. You could play this game anywhere between 2-5 hours in a stream depending on how involved your chat is and if you want to allow them to impact your choices for that game.

    what's your best advice to lvl up from junior QA to senior QA? should a junior QA work in any company to get expertise? either it's a startup or a stablished company?

    • @Kimbuucha
      @Kimbuucha Месяц назад

      Hi there! I'm so sorry I'm just now responding to this. I think tips to level up from junior to senior to find areas of improvement at your company and start ticking off some of those things. Start by improving documentation to help with training or learning. You could also start volunteering to solve some problems with testing certain hard to test parts of your software. Maybe research tools, or find workarounds. Start showing your teammates, or do a training. People will start to look at you as a leader or innovator, and that's how you start getting more senior level tasks and roles. If you need help, mentorship and just getting your head wrapped around software engineering without being overwhelmed, I would avoid a startups. They tend to lean more on experienced people to get things off the ground and established, and not having experience will be hard to do that. An established company has more structure to help you get your bearings without being overwhelming. Hope that makes sense!

    Congrats! Your good news really gives me hope. And yes, please do a video on the tools used. That would be really great content for someone who’s trying to learn more about software testing.

    How do you explain for the other companies, if you are asked why did you quit your current job ? I heard that companies don't like the idea that you just quit because you may do the same to them.

      @@artfox3903 you can say something pretty vague like “I’m looking for an opportunity that better aligns with my professional goals and working style” or “im very growth minded and looking for a new role that provides the opportunity for new challenges that’ll help me grow”. I’ve used both of those before and they tend to go over well. Hope that helps 🙂

    For me, it's not just about stress. When I heard about the poor company policies point, I knew you hit the nail on the head. That's just one critical factor among many. If an employee is not growing, it's better to move elsewhere. Thank you for this video. You did a great job!
