Watermelon is absolutely one of my favorite foods. I eat watermelon as a mono meal throughout the summer season here in Ga., but picked them on my families' farm when I was a kid. It's so nutritious and satisfying. Many people don't realize you can juice the rinds along with the watermelon fruit for densely high nutrition. Vitamins A,C, and chlorophyll.
My ancestors used to pickle the rinds in the summer to eat in the winter and holiday seasons, coloring them red [beet dye] and canning in mason jars. Perfect for Christmas. I loved this session with Chef Carla and Professor Hunter. The heaviness denotes more water. Every tip is on point. #Gratitude

As a kid growing up in Richmond CA we were walking distance from where they grew acres of flowers in greenhouses acres collard greens and a watermelon patch the size the Oakland Coliseum. I remember turning down some watermelon from my girlfriend who grew up in San Francisco and she was like "oh don't tell me don't eat watermelon" and I oh yes I do but it ain't watermelon season yet and she said how do you know when it's in season? I told her when you see Mr Johnson or Mr Abraham rolling down the street singing "WATERMELON Fresh from vine ripe to the rind come git-yo WATERMELON". Then you'll know it's git-yo watermelon season and tell"em I sent' ya. Gotta remember to go by the Black Farmers market the next time I'm on the west side.

Thank you for this video. There are several points I’d add, which I’m surprised were glossed over. 1) Pickled or preserved watermelon rind-in addition to being a southern accoutrement like chow chow-is a highly nutritious. I’m surprised Carla didn’t linger on the importance of and popularity of pickling and preserving in the south. It is not a white thing. 2) She didn’t distinguish SEEDED and SEEDLESS watermelons. Always get SEEDED. 3) Watermelon/melons in general should optimally be consumed without any other fruits to aid proper digestion. Eat only it and wait about 20 mins before adding other fruits, ideally. 4) This is a reminder that there’s beautiful YELLOW watermelon, too. 5) Lastly, folks underestimate the grueling labor it takes to grow this fruit and harvest it. It is SERIOUS work. And, yes, take back the narrative of watermelon and black folks! Smh. Just to think that the ugly tentacles of racism have twisted even this part of our story. It is a wonderful, African foodstuff.

Yay I love watermelon but I’m old enough to remember how the media selected this fruit to make us ashamed to enjoy it. However, they way you put your comment together is everything to me. You have hit the nail right on the head!!!!

I know some people may not recognize or appreciate the hidden message you share with your listeners daily, but I do. I have learned so much from you and the guests that you bring on your show. These last few days have taught me to be willing to lean into your Vision with sure confidence and faith and always allow yourself to have the will to gain a multifarious wealth of knowledge and plan and strategize in such peculiar way, when you are pursuing your Dreams and Visions. This has encouraged to believe they can manifest supernaturally the way God intended them to be during our journey of life. I Thank you Professor Hunter and Chef Hall as well. Great commentary as always!!!

As a kid I couldn't understand how white people didn't love watermelon and sweet potato pie. My elders would always say white people crazy. Oh ok. Didn't know it came from Africa either. Always learn something from Karen's show
