Thank you for that! I have learnt from older videos that people get frustrated if there is too much extra information that's not relevant to what they came looking for when they clicked the video - so with this series and my Latte Art bootcamp I really tried to hone in on exactly what people wanted!

Whoa, that was 7 minutes? I've watched longer videos with less information...
I'm actually learning stuff here, I've been working behind the bar of a coffee shop where everything is manually brewed, so this helps a lot when I actually need to use a machine to make coffee at another cafe. I know how to pull a shot but I never learned the routines between shots, there aren't a lot of tutorials on it and at that point I was already too afraid to ask.
Great video! Very helpful! I am thinking to buy a third wave or peak water jug for my rocket espresso machine, do you recommend which will better in order to have a good quality of water to protect the machine and also good tasting coffee?

3ww I've used and really like, it's just the purchasing of water and the wastage that isn't the best for the environment.

I’ve cleaned my machine regularly but I’ve never descaled it because I’ve been super careful in using only water filtered by a BWT penguin pitcher, which claims to remove all scale while adding magnesium etc. for better tasting coffee. Well, in the last month, I’ve noticed that the steam temperature (my machine is one year old and is a dual-tank system) falls off much quicker than it used to. Could this be caused by scale? Im planning to descale the machine because I can’t think what else it could be. But interested to know your thoughts. Thanks again.
It could be a scale related issue - it's hard with those jug related filters because it really depends on the quality of the water going in. The best one I've heard of is the Peak Water jug - they give you a test strip to test your tap water, and then you can adjust the filter on the jug accordingly for your water.
The other thing a lot of people don't do is change the cartridges in their filters often enough. It might be the perfect filter for your water, but if it hasn't been cleaned and is not filtering any more then it's not doing it's job.

I have a Billi water filter with 0.2 micron filter cartridge. Do these help to soften the water and slow down scale build up?
I use a Brita to filtered my water, cheap and made the job !
Just depends on the hardness of your water as I believe most Brita jug filters clean the water but don't treat hardness problems.
Brita won’t do the job, use “purau” water from coles/woollies (in Australia) if you can’t get a decent filter (eg BWT filter)

Hey Nat! I'm not sure what I need to add to help you out - is there something in particular about backflushing that you're confused about?
You need to disassemble the group and lubricate the cam on a mechanical e61 after backflushing with cleaner
Well, I've had this machine for 12 years and never done that so I'd say "need to" is a bit of an exaggeration.
What about backflushing with just water? I do that 2 times after each session and use the cleaner once a month only with backflushing. Rocket doesn’t recommend to use the cleaner for inside the machine unless you take it in for maintenance.
I clean the shower screen every 3-5 days, it’s easy. Once a month for that is way too much considering it take a minute to do it.
Yeh a water backflush will do a bit of cleaning, no harm in it. If you're backflushing with the cleaner once a month - it might be okay depending on the volume of coffee going through the machine. If the extractions still taste clean and not 'dirty' at the end of the month when you backflush, then great.. if your extractions are starting to taste a bit dirty I'd up it to once a fortnight.
It's interesting that Rocket doesn't recommend descaling by yourself. It is a lengthy process, but it's not particularly dangerous.. just gotta flush A LOT of water through the machine afterwards. Had my machine for 9 years and it hasn't had a detrimental effect, but maybe there is something different about newer models compared to older builds.

Why is my port of filter is so tight to turn after brewing?
Any pointers on cleaning your grinder?
I was originally going to include grinder cleaning in here, but thought there are so many different grinders that maybe it was a bad idea. If you search my channel I do have an old video of taking apart my mazzer mini.. everything you will need to know is in there and it's probably fairly transferrable. The biggest thing with espresso grinders is being careful when you're reseating the top burr carrier and tightening the collar back up is that you don't skip the thread. If you do you may damage the thread and then the burrs will be misaligned.. which will lead to inconsistent grind size (obviously a big problem for grind!)
I'm definitely not saying don't do it. I'm just saying do it with care as it can be a big deal if you break it depending on your grind. Aside from that... don't use water.. just use a dry cloth and I tend to use a vacuum to clean out the grinds a lot easier.

Do you recommend tablets or powder for backflushing and can you use the powder to soak the steam wand in?
the powder and the tablets work similarly. There's actually a different milk steamer product for the steam wand.

Use “purau” water from coles/woollies (in Australia) if you can’t get a decent filter (eg BWT filter). Also, don’t use a descaler, it can corrode the internals and make things worse in the long term. If you use a water filter that is recommended for the boiler (different ones suit copper/ stainless boilers) then descaler not needed/ recommended. Just service machine every 1-2 years. That is my understanding based on the advice from a technician
Pureau is RO water so you need to remineralise it so that you're making tasty espresso (You can use something like Third Wave Water Espresso Profile to remineralise with minerlas suited for espresso extraction).
I've had my machine for 12 years or so, Descaling is something you can do once or twice a year. You're right if you use perfect water for your machine, descaling isn't necessary.. but most of the filtration people use at home just removes impurities, not hardness from the water. In this situation, descaling is needed on occasion, the technician will even use descaler.
Also super important is that you keep up to date with replacing your filter cartridges as needed - a lot of people have a filter but the cartridge inside it hasn't been replaced for 12 months + and it's not really doing its job anymore.

So yeh, the water from my hot tap is all merky and white. Rocket strongly recommend that we don't use descaler but instead manually clean the boiler. What are your thoughts?. Rocket R58.
You're the second person that has mentioned Rocket don't like you using Descaler - I don't know why that's the case but I won't pretend to be more knowing that the company themselves. Is the company you bought it from local? I'd definitely take it back for them to clean professionally. Sounds like a bad scale problem or something else going wrong, but would be a good idea to get it serviced.
Once you have it back, make sure you sort out your water going in to the machine, will make a big difference :)
Would be bottled spring water be suitable?
I think it depends a lot what type. I’ve heard Volvic is good, but using bottled water is not an environmentally sound thing to do so please consider other options.
