It's interesting to hear Americans' opinions about this movie, especially since Mexicans and Latinos hated it. Aside from Selena's horrible acting and accent, the director seems to have no idea what the cartels are really about and he seems to have never spent more than two weeks of vacation in Mexico. So many things were instantly recognizable as foreigners' ideas of how Mexico works. Furthermore, the subject of cartels the director tried to discuss seems out of touch with reality, pretentious, and insensitive. It's clear that none of the people involved in the project understand Mexican culture nor the effect the cartels have on our day-to-day life, this is coming from someone who lives in Sinaloa, Mexico where cartels are rampant. And if that wasn't disappointing enough, the way cast members are referring to all of those who don't like the movie for the previous reasons as unintelligent, just shows how Americanized and Eurocentristic this whole movie was. Funny that they are eager to do a movie about Mexico but don't really seem to care about it.

I saw it at the Morelia film festival. It is rubbish that insults the thousands of victims of drug trafficking. It is a way of trivializing a problem that is very painful in Mexico. It is a film that looks with the eyes of a European tourist, like a good European using all the clichés of how they imagine Mexico and its problems. The director himself said in an interview that he did not investigate the Mexican reality. All that was left was for me to bring out Mexicans with charro hats and maracas dancing the cucaracha or cielito linda. An insult to the families of missing drug victims. And then trying to redeem the "handyman" by turning him into a "saint" is like trying to turn Hitler into a saint if he, after sending the Jews to the ovens and concentration camps, took them out of the pits to hand them over to their relatives. And all of them, but particularly, Selena Gómez acting as if she were in a soap opera, not even a good Mexican soap opera, but a gringo telenovela from Telemundo.
Thanks, Brother Bro, for always bringing attention to the sociopolitical dimensions of film. I just found out about the situation re ‘Seed of the Sacred Fig’ & will now see the film & research the director’s situation because of what you said here. Appreciate you & your work.

As Spanish speaker I found the lyrics incredibly cringy, almost like watching the movie Crash, which won the Oscar for best picture. I think Emilia Pérez is just a story that happened in Mexico and happens to have a trans character, but by no means is a Mexican movie or a good representation for lgbtq+ I could also say you can feel the arrogance from the director translating from his mind to the screen, he said he had no intention in knowing Mexican culture, the real stories that inspired the movie or even casting someone who can actually speak Spanish. Selena saying that she did what she could with the time given is the excuse of a mediocre actress who always had the option to say no to a role she is clearly not prepared for. Is a mid film for me and an obscene spectacle that takes pain and suffering and turn it into a white washed idea
The depiction of Mexico isnt bad. As a Mexican i am not mad at it. The acting itself is good. The story is at least interesting, what gets me is having Zoe be Dominican and no very clearly indicate that she is and is now living in Mexico and working there as a lawyer and it isnt dawning on anyone that is what is happening. There are black people in mexico she could have played a true mexican, by getting the accent right , but i feel like this movie did not make the efford to cast any mexicans as the main characters or give the actors the time to sound and feel mexican. Selena is supposed to be a mexican american women that still cannot speak spanish fluently even after living in mexico for years, just give the girl more time to get it right. The lady playing Epifania is the only mexican actress in the cast and she does an amazing job. I think from the mexican audience she is the only that makes sense in this story. Everything else feels fake. Like a soap opera by way France. The other issue i have with it is that the main character is one of the most violent man turn trans women. The trans part is not the issue, the issue is that i am supposed to believe that a men that has inflicted so much violence and death and was probably one creating many of the death and missing of my country has a sudden chance of heart and now wants to help people find their missing death. The story just didnt give me enough to belive the change. Just didnt.
