The current geopolitical landscape surrounding the relationship between Mexico and the United States offers much for Mexicans to reflect on when considering this film and its possible political implications. One common thread between France and the United States is their shared history of neocolonialism and imperialism, which is deeply rooted in Eurocentric ideologies that often align with white supremacist beliefs. These ideologies position the West as superior to the Global South, upholding a paternalistic approach that asserts dominance over it. This mindset is evident in the creation of this film, and it’s one of the primary reasons many Mexicans are upset.
For instance, the film tackles a serious issue but does so in a biased way, failing to acknowledge that this problem isn't exclusive to Mexico. It is a shared responsibility among several countries. A key point, such as the fact that over 70% of the weapons fueling violence in Mexico originate from the United States, is conspicuously absent. Mexico has been unfairly vilified by the media for decades, particularly by Hollywood, which has consistently contributed to an anti-Mexican narrative. Numerous Hollywood films, for example, have utilized sepia-yellow filters to portray Mexico as backward, dirty, inferior, and underdeveloped. Almost all films focused on Mexico seem to dwell on its negative aspects, and this movie is no exception.
The film’s lack of nuance in portraying Mexico only deepens the anti-Mexican discourse that stems from a Eurocentric, white supremacist perspective. It is particularly troubling that, in a world dominated by white Western powers, these very nations are the ones celebrating and awarding this film, further entrenching negative stereotypes about Mexico.
This film is not only offensive but also deeply insulting to Mexico. The criticism stems from multiple facets, including the film's casting decisions. When asked why there were no Mexican actors in a film set in Mexico, the casting director responded by stating they traveled to Mexico but couldn't find any talented actors. Given that Mexico has millions of residents, this claim feels not only discriminatory but also deeply troubling when considering that the film profits from depicting Mexico's pain and suffering.

    • @gametime2473
      @gametime2473 6 дней назад

@ I think labeling it as "a world dominated by Western powers" is a bit to simple. China is the world's #2 power. Russia is probably #3. India is up there as well. China, Russia and India are far more ethnonationalist than the Western world is generally. I think a large part of the perception that Mexico is "underdeveloped" today comes from the mass migration of people from Mexico to the US due to poverty.

The depiction of Mexico isnt bad. As a Mexican i am not mad at it. The acting itself is good. The story is at least interesting, what gets me is having Zoe be Dominican and no very clearly indicate that she is and is now living in Mexico and working there as a lawyer and it isnt dawning on anyone that is what is happening. There are black people in mexico she could have played a true mexican, by getting the accent right , but i feel like this movie did not make the efford to cast any mexicans as the main characters or give the actors the time to sound and feel mexican. Selena is supposed to be a mexican american women that still cannot speak spanish fluently even after living in mexico for years, just give the girl more time to get it right. The lady playing Epifania is the only mexican actress in the cast and she does an amazing job. I think from the mexican audience she is the only that makes sense in this story. Everything else feels fake. Like a soap opera by way France.
The other issue i have with it is that the main character is one of the most violent man turn trans women. The trans part is not the issue, the issue is that i am supposed to believe that a men that has inflicted so much violence and death and was probably one creating many of the death and missing of my country has a sudden chance of heart and now wants to help people find their missing death. The story just didnt give me enough to belive the change. Just didnt.

I see what you're saying and I think all of ur criticism is valid.
For me, the part of the movie where Rita is convincing the dr to operate on Emilia and perform her sex operation is where the movie tells us the thesis.
Rita's argument is: if u help change society then society allows for each individual to grow, and thus causing a domino effect repeating itself. Basically Emilia being able to live the life she never got to live allows her to make choices she would have never thought to take.
I guess, I'm more forgiving because to me this movie was supposed to be very theatrical and fantastical, as if it was a fantasy story. My suspension of disbelief really helped me enjoy the movie. Especially being Latino and both of my parents being Mexican I also agree with u that it was very soapy and to me that was very nostalgic and saw it as a cool homage more than a qualm.
I do agree they should have casted Mexican actors because Selena's accent was getting to me lol

    • @bertrandflanet9519
      @bertrandflanet9519 Месяц назад +3

I came to agree to your last paragraph.
But at some point, while watching the movie, something clicked: it's a fantasy, or a fairytale. The movie doesn't need you to believe in a purely causal construction of the characters - just like in one of the last scenes, time inexplicably flows backwards: there is always an element of magic in Audiard's gritty and realistic depiction.
The movie, by being partly a musical, demands the viewer to agree to a form of candor or magic.
The epiphany (also the name of the woman Emilia dates) that has Emilia doing charity work is for sure stretched. Still, it also participates in the doubt the viewer nourishes towards Emilia: did they really change? what had they become? what are their ulterior motives? can we/should we pardon them? can a clean slate really exist?
That is where part of the drama lies. And obviously, some things didn't change, referring to the bitter death of Emilia, while they are raised as a sort of icon, a successful and progressive outcome built on violence... it is problematic and conflictual, and that is what the movie is also about.
Additionally, Jacques Audiard's characters tend to be seductive morons. Emilia is one of a kind. Rita is venal. Jessi has been unfaithful... All have their darker sides.
You can watch 'a prophet' or 'the beat that my heart skipped' in which you start to root for characters who are morally dubious.
But I do agree that if you are looking for an 'authentic' Mexican movie... go watch movies by Mexican directors.
Here Mexico is used as a background for a narrative that wants to touch on large, existential questions
In the same way, Audiard's 'the sisters brothers' is a disaster and it's hard for cinematographers, no matter their talent, to shoot in culture/language they don't originate from - Wong Kar Wai 'My blueberry night', or Bong Joon Ho 'Okja' being their poorest material are likely not a coincidence.

It's refreshing to see a piece of art like this. It really felt like the planets had to align to put together a film this impactful. It's an amalgam of very solid acting, directing, music, choreography, and cinematography. It's incredibly rare and original. By far, the best movie of 2024.

Terrible songs that have no rhythm, lyrics that make no sense, created by chatGPT and poorly translated in Google translator. Topics that in the end lead to nothing. Delicate topics such as drug trafficking and disappearances that are addressed in such a crude, superficial and grotesque way. And the end was a mess, when the people consider Emilia Perez as a saint when she in her past directly or indirectly caused the disappearances and it is not enough to found a non-profit organization, people do not only ask for the location of the remains of their relatives, but justice. Here everything goes unpunished. Do you want me to feel sorry for Emilia? No. She did a lot of damage. This is an insult to a harsh reality of Mexico that is still suffering, drug trafficking is not part of the culture of Mexico, with culture you are proud, I do not think Mexico is proud of that. This film glorifies the drug trafficker even more and minimizes the gender transition in escaping justice, because a repentant person turns himself in to justice.

I think I loved it in part because I'd heard it started out as a libretto for an opera. The music isn't operatic, but the storytelling and characters are ideal for that art form. Complaints about this film -- not fun and therefore not a good musical -- are probably from viewers who never enjoyed an opera in their lives.
In any case, I loved the diverse music, loved the acting, dance, and cinematography. And I was floored more than once by the twists of the story. (In fact, I suggest you listen to this spoilerific review AFTER you check it out.)

One of the reasons I have an issue with organized religion is you have to ignore common sense and critical thinking to be an obedient follower. In Christianity, you must believe in the Trinity, miracles, Jesus getting resurrected, and all other types of magical thinking. That's a perfect setup to be victimized. You're conditioned into ignoring your gut instincts and provable facts. Religious leaders are placed on a very high pedestal and considered anointed by a perfect God so how dare anyone question their intentions and acts? You're supposed to have faith and trust that God will fix things and protect you when you should be acknowledging the power within yourself and notify the cops.
I don't mean to offend anyone. I just believe we shouldn't consider anyone or entity as all good and all-knowing. It creates vulnerability, IMHO.

It’s a shame you feel this way. Surrender and submission to God’s love righteousness majesty et al is part and parcel of salvation. That God’s love is to great to imagine/conceive. Yes humans have mucked this up with needs for power and influence of the world. That not what God wants for His children to flourish, for His creation to glorify Him. There’s plenty of witnesses to Jesus’ life, ministry death and resurrection but for you - I wonder what is greater than you than you love? That you’d surrender all of yourself to? That you’d actually acknowledge your spiritual foundation, seek eternal life…

@ I wish I could believe in all that but my critical thinking brain won't allow it. I practice the golden rule because it's the right thing to do. I don't believe in eternal life. Since our time is limited, I feel we should do our best to be decent people for ourselves, others, and those we leave behind. I would love to believe that when we die, we'll reunite with our dead loved ones and rejoice in Heaven. It would be beautiful to be proven wrong. I'll just have to wait and see. Until then, I'll continue doing my best to do more good in this world than harm. If there is a benevolent god(s), goddess(es), He or She will know my heart regardless.

Your review is the reason I watched it. This movie has gotten SO much hate, I decided to watch a couple RUclips critics that I trust and I’m so glad I watched it. It’s a PERFECT film. I throughly enjoyed it and was happy with how the characters ended. Open-minded film buffs should watch it for themselves.

I also loved this movie. I thought this was the type of cinematic experiment Rainer Werner Fassbinder would be making if he was alive.

First of all, this not a documentary about Mexico, Trans people, or Drug Cartels. It is an attempt to get to the bottom of the relationship between the human soul and one's external circumstances. When I studied fine art, I learned that the French impressionist artists were considered untalented and not take seriously by either the public or the art community at large. And ... this is a French movie! To me, the whole plot just grabs at the subconscious archetype evil (Mexican drug lord with power) and asks the question whether the evil is a product of the environment or inherent in the soul. To do this, we are presented with a method of attempting to change that. It makes no attempt to be accurate, in fact, it spits in the face of accurate representation much like the impressionist artists did. What it does explore is the challenges of reprinting one's environment and upbringing. Most of the music is more like rap than song (not typical for a musical). It's very surreal. As a trans women myself who began publicly transitioning later in life, I felt emotionally drawn in to the struggle to let go of the past, while all the while it kept haunting me (like running into the lawyer in London, being susceptible to the kind of anger and rage that ruled so much of his life, etc). It was messy, a bit incoherent, like a dream half remembered. To me a bad movie, is one that I turn off after 15 minutes because I'm bored. I felt engaged through the whole 2+ hours of the film. Nothing quite made sense, yet I think this film will stick with me for a while.

When I was 12 my mom took me to the LV on Bloor Street in Toronto. I had my fake LV from kislux on my arm and thought I was cute. The sweet sales ladies let me try on a bag and a pair of heels knowing we were not wealthy and couldn't afford to purchase anything. It as really nice. No one seemed to care I had a fake bag and I felt special. They even gave me a paper shopping bag which I used as a lunch bag for weeks after! :) Who cares if people don't have real ones? I'm 30 now and ironically, although I can afford them I still prefer real people with fake bags than fake people with real bags. Just saying :) (not that everyone who carries a real one is bad or vice versa.) Just means I don't care if people carry fakes.

I'm Mexican born and raised and I loved this film, not because of the Mexico references (good or bad) but because It's such a good story, with good music, that pushes the boundaries of musicals and works pretty well thanks to the amazing performances of the actors! ❤

De que hablas wey es malísima, la película no tienen ningún sentido, los diálogos están todos mal hechos y la trama no tiene ni un perro sentido. This film is nothing more than a product of the ignorance of people who do not know violence and will never know it.

@@gatobuho- if you didn't found sense on it, bueno es tu pedo, la pelicula no era para ti, pero eso no quiere decir que la pelicula es mala, la trama si tiene sentido, y no es un retrato perfecto por que no es una pelicula realista, es una historia, y la historia esta bien contada, con buena musica, buena fotografia, etc.

Very original premise and I enjoyed the film. Meandered a bit in the middle but a satisfying end. I wish it dove a bit deeper into how both Manithias and Emilia can both be parts of the same person. And same with Saldana’s character. Both characters were parts of a shady part of society (drug lord obviously way worse than sketchy lawyer), and think they could’ve gone more into how both of the reconcile with their past actions. I mean Emilia suddenly doing good kind of papers over a deeper look into her character. She never has to truly confront the damage and suffering she's caused. But still a good watch, some decent songs, and Saldana was excellent. Apparently there’s a lot of backlash for this film. Unsurprisingly it’s over-exaggerated and even some criticisms even misunderstanding the film entirely
