You guys have such perfect timing. I’m traveling on the 29th and I’m petrified of flying so this will really help me relax! I know it wasn’t intentional but thank you guys!
It sounds like a really amazing representation of the spectrum of humanity. Someone once said we often misuse the term "humanity" by interpreting it only to mean "good"--which ignores the other aspects of being human.
LOVED LOVED LOVED this film so much! Saw it first alone and then dragged a dozen friends to see it again so I had someone to talk about it with! Also, first time experiencing your channel and love your dry, cool, and witty takes. You guys have great chemistry! You have a new fan in the ReelOut Queer Film Festival. If you're ever in Kingston, ON Canada at the beginning of February, come say hi!
I love Zoe Saldana, and I'm loving Selena Gomez in Only Murders in the Building! Excited for this one! I've been looking forward to this ever since your pull quote from Joker!
I saw this film at tiff and I totally love it. All of the elements on paper seem to not work but it does remarkably well. I especially loved Saldana's performance and would love to see her get a Supporting Actress win at the Oscars (even though she and Gascon are co-leads but such is the campaign).
Late to the party but I finally watched the movie. It’s easily one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. The performances and the cinematography blew me away!!
I was blown away by this movie. This is a great review, and I agree with the 4 1/2 star rating, although I would have given it 4 3/4 or even 5 stars. It's refreshing to see a piece of art like this. It really felt like the planets had to align to put together a film this impactful. It's an amalgam of very solid acting, directing, music, choreography, and cinematography. It's incredibly rare and original. By far, the best movie of 2024.
I think I loved it in part because I'd heard it started out as a libretto for an opera. The music isn't operatic, but the storytelling and characters are ideal for that art form. Complaints about this film -- not fun and therefore not a good musical -- are probably from viewers who never enjoyed an opera in their lives. In any case, I loved the diverse music, loved the acting, dance, and cinematography. And I was floored more than once by the twists of the story. (In fact, I suggest you listen to this spoilerific review AFTER you check it out.)
I just watched this movie and loved it, Zoe was so good, singing, acting, speaking in Spabish. J-lo could never! The only thing is that I wished they would have given Selena’s role to a Mexican actress from Mexico, who actually speaks Spanish.
I'm a strait dude and I was moved several times by this film; at their core the themes are universal. Even if it wasn't a musical the premise and performances were excellent and would have held up. It's also really cool to see Spanish speaking American actors performing in their native language.
I’m finally watching the film. It’s everything's you gentlemen said it was. Thank you! TBH I thought the drug king pin character was hot. Don’t judge me 😊
From the UK; I watched yesterday afternoon - I love this film. I’m not a great modern musical fan but I enjoyed the film from the start. I thought all the main actors were amazing especially Karla Sofia Gascon; I hope she wins more awards. I thought that this was the best role that I have seen Zoe play; dancing and singing - I was very impressed. I will try and watch again in the cinema and on Netflix 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I walked into this movie at a film festival with zero idea what it was about - so bizarre - like a transgender musical version of no country for old men. I’m amazed how great of a reception it’s getting because it’s such a huge risk and swing for the filmmakers
The depiction of Mexico isnt bad. As a Mexican i am not mad at it. The acting itself is good. The story is at least interesting, what gets me is having Zoe be Dominican and no very clearly indicate that she is and is now living in Mexico and working there as a lawyer and it isnt dawning on anyone that is what is happening. There are black people in mexico she could have played a true mexican, by getting the accent right , but i feel like this movie did not make the efford to cast any mexicans as the main characters or give the actors the time to sound and feel mexican. Selena is supposed to be a mexican american women that still cannot speak spanish fluently even after living in mexico for years, just give the girl more time to get it right. The lady playing Epifania is the only mexican actress in the cast and she does an amazing job. I think from the mexican audience she is the only that makes sense in this story. Everything else feels fake. Like a soap opera by way France. The other issue i have with it is that the main character is one of the most violent man turn trans women. The trans part is not the issue, the issue is that i am supposed to believe that a men that has inflicted so much violence and death and was probably one creating many of the death and missing of my country has a sudden chance of heart and now wants to help people find their missing death. The story just didnt give me enough to belive the change. Just didnt.
I see what you're saying and I think all of ur criticism is valid. For me, the part of the movie where Rita is convincing the dr to operate on Emilia and perform her sex operation is where the movie tells us the thesis. Rita's argument is: if u help change society then society allows for each individual to grow, and thus causing a domino effect repeating itself. Basically Emilia being able to live the life she never got to live allows her to make choices she would have never thought to take. I guess, I'm more forgiving because to me this movie was supposed to be very theatrical and fantastical, as if it was a fantasy story. My suspension of disbelief really helped me enjoy the movie. Especially being Latino and both of my parents being Mexican I also agree with u that it was very soapy and to me that was very nostalgic and saw it as a cool homage more than a qualm. I do agree they should have casted Mexican actors because Selena's accent was getting to me lol
I came to agree to your last paragraph. But at some point, while watching the movie, something clicked: it's a fantasy, or a fairytale. The movie doesn't need you to believe in a purely causal construction of the characters - just like in one of the last scenes, time inexplicably flows backwards: there is always an element of magic in Audiard's gritty and realistic depiction. The movie, by being partly a musical, demands the viewer to agree to a form of candor or magic. The epiphany (also the name of the woman Emilia dates) that has Emilia doing charity work is for sure stretched. Still, it also participates in the doubt the viewer nourishes towards Emilia: did they really change? what had they become? what are their ulterior motives? can we/should we pardon them? can a clean slate really exist? That is where part of the drama lies. And obviously, some things didn't change, referring to the bitter death of Emilia, while they are raised as a sort of icon, a successful and progressive outcome built on violence... it is problematic and conflictual, and that is what the movie is also about. Additionally, Jacques Audiard's characters tend to be seductive morons. Emilia is one of a kind. Rita is venal. Jessi has been unfaithful... All have their darker sides. You can watch 'a prophet' or 'the beat that my heart skipped' in which you start to root for characters who are morally dubious. But I do agree that if you are looking for an 'authentic' Mexican movie... go watch movies by Mexican directors. Here Mexico is used as a background for a narrative that wants to touch on large, existential questions In the same way, Audiard's 'the sisters brothers' is a disaster and it's hard for cinematographers, no matter their talent, to shoot in culture/language they don't originate from - Wong Kar Wai 'My blueberry night', or Bong Joon Ho 'Okja' being their poorest material are likely not a coincidence.
I'm Mexican born and raised and I loved this film, not because of the Mexico references (good or bad) but because It's such a good story, with good music, that pushes the boundaries of musicals and works pretty well thanks to the amazing performances of the actors! ❤
Through fear and intimidation a criminal lawyer is "motivated" to get things done...the language is no barrier, to you both too, which is why its well received, that's good!
When I was 12 my mom took me to the LV on Bloor Street in Toronto. I had my fake LV from kislux on my arm and thought I was cute. The sweet sales ladies let me try on a bag and a pair of heels knowing we were not wealthy and couldn't afford to purchase anything. It as really nice. No one seemed to care I had a fake bag and I felt special. They even gave me a paper shopping bag which I used as a lunch bag for weeks after! :) Who cares if people don't have real ones? I'm 30 now and ironically, although I can afford them I still prefer real people with fake bags than fake people with real bags. Just saying :) (not that everyone who carries a real one is bad or vice versa.) Just means I don't care if people carry fakes.
Saw it last night, it felt like a rich text but I gotta admit I didn’t understand the meaning… is Emilia a metaphor for Mexico? Wish there was more examination of the morality of Emilia getting to start a new life and escape her evil deeds (was there? Maybe I didn’t understand it). The first 30 minutes is phenomenal
One of the reasons I have an issue with organized religion is you have to ignore common sense and critical thinking to be an obedient follower. In Christianity, you must believe in the Trinity, miracles, Jesus getting resurrected, and all other types of magical thinking. That's a perfect setup to be victimized. You're conditioned into ignoring your gut instincts and provable facts. Religious leaders are placed on a very high pedestal and considered anointed by a perfect God so how dare anyone question their intentions and acts? You're supposed to have faith and trust that God will fix things and protect you when you should be acknowledging the power within yourself and notify the cops. I don't mean to offend anyone. I just believe we shouldn't consider anyone or entity as all good and all-knowing. It creates vulnerability, IMHO.
It’s a shame you feel this way. Surrender and submission to God’s love righteousness majesty et al is part and parcel of salvation. That God’s love is to great to imagine/conceive. Yes humans have mucked this up with needs for power and influence of the world. That not what God wants for His children to flourish, for His creation to glorify Him. There’s plenty of witnesses to Jesus’ life, ministry death and resurrection but for you - I wonder what is greater than you than you love? That you’d surrender all of yourself to? That you’d actually acknowledge your spiritual foundation, seek eternal life…
@ I wish I could believe in all that but my critical thinking brain won't allow it. I practice the golden rule because it's the right thing to do. I don't believe in eternal life. Since our time is limited, I feel we should do our best to be decent people for ourselves, others, and those we leave behind. I would love to believe that when we die, we'll reunite with our dead loved ones and rejoice in Heaven. It would be beautiful to be proven wrong. I'll just have to wait and see. Until then, I'll continue doing my best to do more good in this world than harm. If there is a benevolent god(s), goddess(es), He or She will know my heart regardless.
You guys have such perfect timing. I’m traveling on the 29th and I’m petrified of flying so this will really help me relax! I know it wasn’t intentional but thank you guys!

This movie was fantastic. Shame it is not being talked about more.
Okay 4.5 Stars! I'm even more excited to see it now.
Not a softer side of SEARS!?! 🤣🤣💀 unlocking memories on a tuesday morning haha
I don't get this and feel genuinely bummed out and uneducated. 😂

Been waiting for this review!
What an original plot! I've never heard of anything even close, story wise, sounds like such a gamble and glad it paid off

totally one ofthe unforgettable movies of 2024...
I'm glad such an important and beautiful film will be streaming for all to see.

Happy Halloween to you Nick and Joseph! I hope you guys have a fun holiday.
I'm late to the reviews this week, but wow, i can't wait to see this. Usually, musicals can go either way, but this sounds like a winner. Thank you.
*Again, this is another film I totally would have passed on; but your review is so good! I can't wait to see **#EmiliaPérez**!* 🎬
I found the film really engaging. Meaning, I was never bored and I was thoroughly entertained. Continued success!
Thanks for tying up this movie for me!
Just watched, insanely entertaining one of a kind story. I loved it
As a Grace Jones fan...I like the shirt. You should review her documentary that came out. Bloodlight and Bami
I just watched this movie and loved it, Zoe was so good, singing, acting, speaking in Spabish. J-lo could never! The only thing is that I wished they would have given Selena’s role to a Mexican actress from Mexico, who actually speaks Spanish.
I watched it 2x and it’s really beautiful. I will watch it again🤣
I'm a strait dude and I was moved several times by this film; at their core the themes are universal. Even if it wasn't a musical the premise and performances were excellent and would have held up. It's also really cool to see Spanish speaking American actors performing in their native language.
I also loved this movie. I thought this was the type of cinematic experiment Rainer Werner Fassbinder would be making if he was alive.
Thanks for the review. I haven't seen a Jacques Audiard film for a while. Almost forgot about him.
I’m finally watching the film. It’s everything's you gentlemen said it was. Thank you! TBH I thought the drug king pin character was hot. Don’t judge me 😊
Thank you both!!
I am going to watch this movie on Netflix soon.

This film looks like it could be extraordinary, and I can't wait to see it. I haven't been this excited to see a film in a long time!
Okay, after scoring a four and a four and a half I really need to watch!
Before watching I didn't know what it was about I just heard it was a musical I loved 😻
I walked into this movie at a film festival with zero idea what it was about - so bizarre - like a transgender musical version of no country for old men. I’m amazed how great of a reception it’s getting because it’s such a huge risk and swing for the filmmakers

Damien Jalet needs more recognition for his choreography, its was mind-blowing in this.
