- Edit 10/1/2020 Please Note I have responded to some comments claiming we had injured this fish prior to the video, but I'm just going to explain here and be done with it.
We absolutely did not interact with these mahi mahi in any way. We did not catch them and deoxygenate them. We did not spear them. We did not gaff them. The wounds on the mahi mahi are from the false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) a species of oceanic dolphin. Mahi mahi are actually the most frequently documented prey of these amazing marine mammals (Baird, 2016, "The Lives of Hawai'i's Dolphins and Whales"). These predators use pack hunting and stamina to wear the incredibly fast mahi mahi down. The fish were indeed trying to use us (and our boat) for cover, but the whales always had the upper hand. An incredible experience that we were absurdly fortunate to witness.

"OOOH YYYYEAAAH!!"
Lol

Get out, voreists
The dolphins and pilot whales were SOOOO clearly being social. That's so neat.
yeah, I'm more interested in that than the feeding actually
I’m not sure if it’s entirely benevolent. They very well could be communicating about something, but it also could be territory disputes for food resources. Notice you don’t see the rough-toothed dolphins when the pilot whales are getting the mahi mahi.
I’m not an expert on cetaceans though, and also i have no clue whether pilot whales and false killer whales are different or not lol
EDIT: pilot whales and false killer whales are not the same. Who knows what they were doing with the dolphins.
True
3:56 if that's them being social then get me tha fuck outta there lmao
they were definitely not being friendly. they were pursuing the fish. Most likely a territorial issue
The Mahi Mahi was trying to use the divers as cover from capture.
Exactly. The fish was keeping close to the divers for safety. Notice the first time how the whale broke off when the fish got too close to the human.
You are genius Captain Obvious.
@Adam Khan It wasn't hooked you idiot, where is the line?
Adam Khan why is that the other comments say it’s on a line mean it’s true? We’re both of the Mahi Mahi on the line? What happened to the other one? Did it just leave, or did it just pop up out of nowhere see it’s buddy “hooked”
Lmao god damn y’all are squeamish. It’s a fish. There’s an ecosystem... it’s not like little mermaid down there. Also wasn’t hooked. any sort of morals you think you have don’t apply there at all.
Imagine receiving your order at a local restaurant and people outside the window yell “OHHH YEAAAH”
Good lord, they look down and it’s just an abyss beneath them... horrifying
There's nothing colossal down there
I swam with sharks in Hawaii. You could see them 100 feet below you. Yes, horrifying.
@Bad Harmonics You better not say Megalodon
@Bad Harmonics Pretty sure tiger sharks don't live in the depths.
@Bad Harmonics Am aware. But I still wouldn't exactly call it an abyssal creature.
Besides, I was thinking more like something that spent all its life at the bottom of the ocean. There's that silly "Megalodon" claim and the misleading "95% of the ocean is unknown" which tends to make some people believe there's a kraken down there or something... Don't get me started on those dumb videos claiming Mosasaurs living in the Mariana trench.
I think I'm just too fed up about these stories...
The whale was like, "hey man, you gonna eat that? Cause if not, I'll take it."

@1323 V In the dolphin family, but literally called False Killer Whale. Other examples: Killer Whales, Pilot Whales.
@1323 V Despite all that, people still refer ro them as whales. If I had said "dolphin" in my original comment, most people would've been wondering what I was talking about, especially since the title of the video refers to them as whales. If you're on the spectrum, I totally understand your need to be literal, but this was just a joke. Not a lesson on ocean life. It's ok to let it go.
@1323 V you are correct in that these animals are indeed technically an oceanic dolphin. They are also however colloquially known as false killer whales and such is life when it comes to common names vs scientific names. We could just just call them by their actual name Psuedorca crassidens and be done with it! 😜
@@madscient1st349 Personally i call all members of (Delphinidae) dolphin in the common name, as only a few for some reason are called whales but all the porpoises are call porpoises. All the group known as black-fish which are the ones that don't have dolphin in there common names. Mellon headed whale-(Peponocephala electra) = Mellon headed dolphin. Killer whale-(Orcinus orca) = Killer dolphin. False killer whale-(Pseudorca crassidens) = Thick toothed dolphin. Pygmy false killer whales-(Feresa attenuata) = White lipped dolphin. Long finned pilot whale-(Globicephala melas ) = Long finned pilot dolphin. Short finned pilot whale-(Globicephala macrorhynchus) = Short finned pilot dolphin. And coz it's to close to common name of the Right whales that belongs to genus-(Eubalaena) baleen whales, i call the Northern right whale dolphin-(Lissodelphis borealis) = Northern smooth back dolphin. Southern right whale dolphin-(Lissodelphis peronii) = Southern smooth back dolphin. Smooth back due to the total lack of a dorsal fin.
For those who keep saying it was caught and released before the recording, a message from some mahi mahi anglers and marine biologists:
Mahi mahi produce a lot of heat from all their giant spastic muscles trying to break loose from the line. When combined with their inability to radiate heat, this causes them to overheat and die.
The mahi mahi in the video were exhausted and injured by dolphin teeth, not humans.
The reason it swam on its side is likely because it had been dragged into deep water (by dolphins) before they started recording it, so its swim bladder (the organ that keeps fish swimming upright) was busted and filling with blood and/or water.
At no point in the video can you see the shine of a hook or ripples from the fishing line cutting along the water's surface.
Fuck, that sounds terrible
>_
What’s it matter if they were catch and release or not? I just know they taste great grilled, and even fried.
@@ChrisJ-mf7cj Because people were saying the video was fake and that the fish was on a line or exhausted from being caught and released.
I wouldn't mind trying some fried mahi mahi, only I live very far from any ocean. Good to know they taste good though.
Also if someone threw a mahi back that size they are fucking stupid.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how one should hold their camera when taking a video of something amazing. 👏
Great shot!
This kind of video reminds again and again that dolphins, toothed-whales, and their gangs are terrifying predators
The murkiness, camera movements, and heavy breathing make this feel like a horror movie! Super cool video!
Haha it really does.

Mahi mahi looks like its seeking for help from humans
They will stick to anything in the ocean for protection....even a micro sized piece of kelp.
Schooling behavior due to being actively hunted.
Im here after that dudes Tik Tok that called them a sharks sleep paralysis
The whale just hauled the mahi mahi off by the tail. Did it eat it, or was it just pulling it away from the man?
They usually take em super deep so the mahi gets bent & dies, then they eat da buggah...
Let me translate for the haoles: Yep, his lunch was Mahi mahi sashimi. Whales likely dive with their prey, because fish don’t like sudden major depth changes, it damages their swim bladder, and fish get super disoriented or die when that happens. The water is also colder the deeper you go, so prey move slower.
Also dragging it backwards will oddly enough "drown" or "suffocate" the el Dorado, which I am amazed at the precision of it grabbing it by the tail... I'd be having the same elated reactions as those divers so aptly demonstrated! Awesuuuume!
@@restart426 I think it's just "dorado".......you're thinking of John Wayne....two different things.
@@edstimator1 lol thanks for the correction!
Mahi was clearly injured, otherwise would have been tough catch.
Please do not underestimate the resilience of fish or the persistence of whales. Fish in general can function well despite sustaining severe injuries. These whales could have chased the Mahi for a while. It may have also been disoriented by the whale's sonar.
Chaotix Fox that doesn’t mean it’s not injured lol. Plus it’s clearly underweight by like a lottt
1.51 it has a fresh puncture injury I think it got speared
The whales had been tiring these mahi out for a while. Not to mention biting and raking them with their teeth. Pretty gnarly to watch.
4:05 I love how it’s clicks rev up like an engine
Mazda?
you really love that?????? strange
I agree, the Mahi Mahi look damaged and didn’t act like one of the faster fishes in the ocean. Plus I thought I saw one try to hide next to a diver, who kicked it back towards the False Killer Whale. The whole thing seems kind of unsporting, like crippling an antelope to watch a lion eat it.
I would kick it away too to potentially not lose a leg or being dragged into the abyss
Not about sport. Don't want to be that close to a prey animal with a predator making passes at it. False-killer came up fast from below.
too dangerous to help that fish, the whales are too big and strong, wrong moves kill in the ocean
You aren’t really the sharpest tool in the shed. That’s like trying to save said antelope from a hungry pride of lions and you have nothing but a toothbrush. So go ahead and volunteer yourself as a meatshield for the prey animal. Your emotional response to save the prey animal will not stop the determined predator in hot pursuit.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. You guys seem like very knowledgeable & conscientious marine life enthusiasts. Sure you love deep sea fishing as well but glad you seem to respect the ocean.
That fish had wounds on it...so that may have been the attraction.
Mahi pair up for years. The poor thing was coming for help. Sad
correct i suspect its mate was eaten before hand, it just disappeared and its mate was waiting for it
Really don't get what the excitement is all about!! So a fish got eaten by a whale porpoise!! So what??? It didn't look like much of a struggle! That's not the behavior of a threatened Mahi-mahi and the dolphins could sense there was something wrong. Eventually they just took the offered snack and the gladiators hollered like stuck pigs! Wow!! so impressive!!! when's the next show?
lol you have issues....
@@SeanyJ420 Really??? What may they be Dr. SJL??? Perhaps u just don't get it....
I have to admit that I saw the same thing. It seems like he either caught or speared the Mahi first, he's got it on a line and is using it as bait. I could be wrong but watch his hands as it moves around him.
I used to live in Honolulu, you have a choice freediving or surfing and I chose freediving. It's an amazing experience.
Given the fact that pelagic cetaceans are sparingly encountered and understudied, this might actually be one of the few times someone has ever recorded one hunting a mahi mahi.
Miquel Escribano Ivars they are exited man it is not every day you can witness such scene
Looks like that mahi had been gaffed and released, you can see the two holes, and it wasn't up to speed....
thats what I thought, it was even swiming on the back
Good catch. I looked at 3:06 in the video again, put it on .25 speed to see if the video was clear enough to confirm gaff marks instead of cookie-cutter shark bites, and it is hard to tell. The front mark doesn't look as clean as a usual cookie cutter shark bite, while the rear one might be. The one on the bottom definitely is a cookie cutter shark bite, but a good case for being a gaffed male mahi could be made just by the front mark. I tried to see if there were any fishing line marks around the mouth but I didnt see any.
@Amy Richard not gaff marks, those are whale tooth holes. The mahi had been getting chased and beat up by the whales for about 30 minutes before this video was shot. The mahis were very much not up to speed but that was all the whales doing, not ours. Mahi mahi are the most documented prey species of false killer whales. They need no help from us.
Those are defaintly teeth marks.the 2 holes are where the teeth went deep and 3 scartches are where they were shallow and slipped.
Mahi Mahi had gaff hook wounds and was clearly struggling.. what stupid young men will do for some likes on RUclips is cruel
But why is then a cupple of mahi there? how should that worked out? .. One of them seems to have no wounds.
Jonas I didn’t see the other side of that fish. One fish has gaping wounds. Also these fish don’t hang around fish that hunt them. They swim away.
@@rickjason215 You can see both sides just for short time of the other mahi. Il get that this is a strange situation but the fact that this is still a couple is also strange.
