What’s insane is that even aside from LOB, and even Brandon Browner, this Seahawks defense still had Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright, and a d-line all in their prime.
Im 58 yrs old and this was a top 5 defense. in no particular order i say. 70's Pittsburgh Steelers, 1985 Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and Legion of Boom, oh yeah. the Coach Gruden Tampa Bay Bucs
I almost agree with that I actually think the legion of boom were better than the Ravens defense. But I'll go with the steel curtain and the bruise Brothers first and second.
I think it goes like this. Pittsburgh Steelers steel curtain, 85 bears the bruise Brothers, Seattle Seahawks legion of boom, Warren Sapp and the buccaneers defense, Lawrence Taylor. Literally Lawrence Taylor by himself is in this category with whole defenses
Because of the rules of today's NFL favors the offensive players over the defensive players, in my opinion the legion of boom are the greatest defense of all time.
I agree with that, especially considering how many pick-sixes and fumbles they caused that year. I had them on Yahoo Fantasy too and racked up some points.
Richard Sherman was consistently being underrated and misjudged. He lasted until the fifth round because he was perceived as too "slow" -- he "only" ran a 4.5 forty -- to succeed as a starting corner-back in the NFL. Many people, especially in the media didn't know to what make of a young black man (straight) out of Compton with dreadlocks who graduated from Stanford. He messed with their preconceptions.
Marshawn "I'm just here so I don't get fined" Lynch and Richard Sherman were the backbone of the Hawks. Wilson was a big part, but he was almost like the youger brother who picked up the slack (not a slam against Wilson, it is what it is).
Chancellor & Sherman for me, as u can see by the highlights. Definitely one of the best defenses ever. That super bowl win we we're supposed to lose to Peyton Manning and yet we killed em. And that 2nd one we technically won on defense too but we decided to be stupid on offense on the last play of the game.
I still think about how stupid that play was. I mean, you have a guy who’s damn near impossible to stop when he runs the ball, and you chance it with a throw?
I live in Seattle and during that Season our State went crazy! It was so amazing. We painted a 747 to fly over the State. It was so exciting. The fans were named the 12th Man because when the other team would huddle we would make so much noise that it raised earthquake level. It truly was just magic. They just came together and were confident. I would agree the best NFL Team we will ever had and may never have again. So memorable!!!!
Sherm and Beast Mode were the heart and soul of this team, but there were stars at nearly every position. Doug Baldwin and Golden Tate were incredibly dynamic offensive threats, and on defense there really wasn't a DE or LB that was a weak link. Such an impressive defense, top 5 historically for sure. The offensive capabilities of the teams they competed against were unlike anything other top defenses ever had to go against. And then to utterly demolish Manning and his record breaking offense of the biggest stage? Legends!
Watched all the Hawks games during this era, and what struck me most was: 1. The defense communicated more than any I've ever seen, more pre-snap talk among linemen/linebackers/backfield and they then made more adjustments than any defense I've seen. 2. The defense swarmed to the ball and worked together to get interceptions and fumbles more than any I've seen. Watch the video when a ball pops up - Seahawks work together to keep the ball live, or when the ball's on the ground and 6/7/8 Hawks swarm to it.
The real MVP was John Schneider the General Manager who drafted the team in the later rounds over the course of a few years. Including: Earl Thomas pick 14 Sherman pick 154 Kam pick 133 Russell Wilson pick 75 And now DK Metcalf with pick 64
There were a few seasons where the Seahawks defense was scoring more points than their offence on a pretty regular basis. It made for great viewing for sure.
I loved the Steelers for yrs but lived in Seattle and Seahawks are my team. It was a blast watching each game with The Legion Of Boom! Whole state was watching. Such excitement!
The Legion Of Boom specifically referred to secondary of the Seahawks at the time. Cornerback Richard Sherman, who faced off against wide receivers, Kam Chancellor Strong Safety and Free Safety Earl Thomas. The CB on the other side was also usually good, but it was a bit of a revolving door. There have been better defenders, but as a collective group they measure up with the very best secondaries of all time. Easy Top 5. Yes I am biased though. Often forgotten were our linebackers, in particular Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright and Defensive End Michael Bennett. I'm not sure the order but this era of the Seahawks D ranks up there with the 1980's Chicago Bears, 2000's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and and Baltimore Ravens for all time greats
Kam career was cut short cause of neck injury but dude was still one of the best safeties could have easily played In the years of Dawkins Ed Reed and Troy Palomu
Not my favorite team, but I have nothing against them. They were fun to watch during this era. Big personalities, big energy. Hard to rank defenses across eras, but I wouldn't argue with anyone who put them top 5 all-time.
Aloha! I was living & teaching in the tiny bush village of Golovin, Alaska (population approx 160 ppl), when the Seahawks won the Superbowl. I was the ONLY "12th Man" at our small teacher's viewing party. Man Oh Man was the celebration fun & funny (the principal was for the opposing team > let's just say she didn't speak to me for a while LOL). There was a diehard "12th Man" in the village, a local - born and raised in Golovin - and I was happy to share some Superbowl souvenirs with him when they arrived in the mail from my family in WA state. A few years later, he, his young son, and another local young man flew all the way (3 different plane flights) to come to their VERY FIRST LIVE FOOTBALL GAME to see the SEAHAWKS in person at the Century Link Stadium, and I was honored to be their host and driver and join them for game day in Seattle. Good Times :D PS. The cheering noise from the fans was unbelievable and awesome!!
I use to go to training camp at EWU in eastern Washington. That was so much fun. And the year after our first super bowl even the referees told the fans how sorry they felt about about the bad calls they made…we should of won.
07:25 The Denver Broncos we're the most prolific offense in NFL history. I didn’t know it then but I lived in Seattle and fell in love with football for the duration of the LOB era. It was exhilarating and heartbreaking to see such a dynamic crew plus brilliantly and miss the Super Bowl nearly every year. Being in Seattle during that time was something especially on Sundays at church when second service was still going simultaneously with kickoff. My favorite LoB members were Sherman and Chancellor. Lynch must be mentioned honorably. 💚💚💚
Your not wrong about having such a strong defense elevating everyone’s game & confidence. Completely different sport but I played soccer for over a decade in highschool we had a goalkeeper who was trained since he was young af by an ex pro soccer goalie & he was a beast as a result. Guy was playing on the best teams in our state, going to tournaments in Germany & other countries etc. went on to play D1 soccer in college. Me & my boys played defense & having him behind us in goal we felt invincible. It took a fucking helluva goal to score on him, anything less & he’s saving it. One game he saved 3 penalty kicks which is un heard of in my opinion. Not in a penalty shootout either we gave up 3 penalty’s in normal time & he saved all 3 vs good shots & players. Was also a little stressful bc we knew if we fucked up he was gonna call us out for it but that’s just being a good teammate, being around him made us play better. Kid was a beast, unfortunately got injured 2 years into college & stop playing, players, coaches & even opposing teams offensive often loved him because it was so entertaining watching him dive around to make saves, his patent move was when it looked like the shot was going to go in, he would just stand there & scream “over” & we would all watch as the ball barely goes over the goal or went wide. He had incredible special awareness, that & coming up to half field basically during corner kicks, Neuer sweeper keeper style
I'm born and raised in Washington and been a Seahawks fan for life. But if I were to answer your 2 questions without bias I would say the Legion of Boom were a top 5 defense all-time easily and maybe top 3 along with the '85 Bears and either the Steel Curtain or the Purple People Eaters. Our D-Line, LBs AND Corners were all top notch. Now, if I had to name just 2 players (offense or defense) that made that era great for Seattle I would have to say Richard Sherman on defense and Marshawn Lynch on offense. Both were no nonsense, hard-nosed players who did their jobs at the highest levels and had the utmost confidence in themselves and could bring out the best in everyone around them. There were other great players for sure, like Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Doug Baldwin, Russell Wilson, etc. but those 2 really defined the personality of that era Seahawks team.
They were defiantly top 5. In my opinion, they should be in the conversation of Best of all time with 85 Bears, Pittsburg’s steel curtain and I know I’m forgetting a couple. As far as heart and soul of the Seahawks in that era was Kam Chancellor, and Marshawn Lynch.
they have been ranked and stat wise they are 3rd. if i remember right its 2000 ravins (yep), 85 bears (yep) and then the seahawks but i dont remember what year (i think 2013 but not sure). when i saw this the 4th ranked seamed right too. i think the info came out around 2014 or 2015 but once again i cant remember what i had to eat yesterday so 7-8 years ago stats nope.
Hey Kabir. Great video.... I live in Seattle but I'm from San Diego so I Seattle was not my team. But,,,,,this city supports this team on a level that didn't exist in San Diego. During football season (like now) every body wear their team jersey's on the Friday before a game and hangs their Seahawk flags outside of their homes, businesses, even cars. My doctor is wearing his jersey, or pastor is wearing his jersey, my boss, coworkers, news anchors, EVERYBODY supports this team. Similar to how they support their soccer team "the Sounders." Yeah, Seattle is a great soccer town. ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽ The Legion years were great. Most attributable to Cam and Russ, Earl Thomas. Top 10 all time defense. Not top 5!! They needed a very dominate, unstoppable, hall of fame pass rusher to be top 5. 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
It's hard to single any one of them out because the strengths of one contributed to the play of the others. I loved Richard Sherman, thought he was a top three cb but he benefited from having the enforcer in Cam Chancellor and Earl Thomas playing center field covering so much ground and all of them being so cerebral. Sherman, while not the quickest, was so smart and had great technique and athleticism. Cam was a combination of smarts, athleticism and sheer power. Thomas was smart, fast, athletic and just freaking everywhere! He literally cleaned up for everyone. He allowed the others to take chances and if they missed he didn't. That in turn made the others better because they could play looser and take more chances knowing he was there to clean up. Cam put the fear of God in receivers! He was so large and yet deceptively quick and athletic. If you came across the middle, beware!! So they all helped and fed off each other so well! But we also can't forget about Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright at linebacker. Bobby was the quarterback of the defense and did it better than anybody in the league! Then there was the pash rush from Michael Bennett and Chris Clemmons that obviously contributed to the success of the defense by constantly harassing the opposing qb's. And we can't forget one Marshawn Lynch, Beast Mode!! Russell Wilson, Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate...the list goes on and on. Just a very special team!!
Watching these games live was awesome. I was in the hospital recovering from heart surgery during a Seahawks vs Vikings game and i kept setting off the alarm due to my heart rate spiking from the crazy plays.
Kam and Beastmode were the Heart of the team for sure ....they brought the physicality and set the tone each game. Its gonna be a long and rough day for opponents
That 2013 defense was top 3 of all time. Remember, they humiliated the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl when the Broncos had the all-time greatest offense in NFL history. They were absolutely committed, physically intimidating and deep. Half of that defense got huge contracts from other teams and the Defensive Coordinator got a head coaching job the next year. Everyone wanted a piece of the magic.
Legion of Boom is top 5 defense of all time. And Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas were the 3 most important players on the defense. That Seahawks team was really good all around tho, they also had Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Bobby Wagner, Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Jermain Kearse, Sidney Rice, Percy Harvin, Russell Okung, James Carpenter, JR Sweezy, Max Unger, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, Bruce Irvin, Brandon Mebane, Malcolm Smith, KJ Wright, Jeremy Lane, Brandon Browner, Byron Maxwell, Stephen Hauschka… Trully a STACKED team.
If you want to see pain, check out the highlight reel of kam chancellor, in this defense there are no 2 players you can chose, its kam, richard,, bobby, k.j, cliff, michael, earl, lane, smith, the legion wasnt always about the corners and safeties, it was about the def line and linebackers too
When it comes to the Seahawks, the two players I believe played the biggest role in their success were Kam Chancellor and running back Marshawn Lynch. While the Hawks haven't had a Sherman-esque CB or a Thomas-esque Free Safety, they've gotten close with Griffin and Diggs. But Kam and Marshawn were tone setters on their sides of the team. Lynch would have a 5 yard run but would just abuse the DL and linebackers to fight for those 5 yards and the Seahawks defense would see that and feed off of it. Kam would destroy WRs and TEs (ESPECIALLY TEs) going over the middle and the Seahawks offense would feed of that too. Both players having injury issues at the later stages of their career was devastating too as the Hawks have never found players anything like them which is a shame because the plays Marshawn and Kam made were some of the major reasons for how low the Seahawks crowd got at Hawks games.
Definitely the best defense of the 2010s. The secondary (Sherman, Chancellor, Thomas) was the leader but don't forget they had great linebackers like Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright.
I’m a PNW man so I watched the 2013 and 2014 superbowls. Hawks defense absolutely shut down the Broncos during the 2013 bowl and there were some things that happened in the 2014 bowl against the Patriots, like Kearse’s lucky catch and the final fuckup. XD
I live in W. Washington. Seattle is one of my two teams. The L.O.B. (+ Wagner and K.J.) is definitely a top ten all-time defense. Certainly the most electric and dominant defensive secondary I've ever seen. However, the most dominant defense of all time is the '85 Bears.
You should consider the fact that the '85 Bears wouldn't have survived in today's NFL. The rules then compared to now is night and day. Back then a defense could destroy the opponent with impunity (slightly exaggerating). Modern NFL is more finesse, back in '85 was a junkyard and nothing pretty
Top 5 easily and probably top 3 but at that point any of the top 3 could be 1 all time. The three headed monster Kam, Sherman, and ET. Absolutely brilliant to watch and took over in big games.
Oh heck ya. I'm 55. I've seen many a defense. Very , Very good. I must admit I have a dog in the fight though. Born in Seattle Wa. Fan since 1975, the year it was announced Seattle was going to get a team. I was 8. Fan for LIFE!!!!!! First 20 years were rough. But boy~oh! after 1995.....Seahawks have kicked ASS!!! this year will be rough lol. I'm proudful, not foolish
Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch were the two most dominant players and most important players on that super bowl winning team. I have been to Seattle Seahawk fan since 1980 and I can tell you that with a straight face and without hesitation.
Seahawks were very good, but I offer the 2000 Baltimore Ravens as the #1 These Ravens won a Super Bowl despite going five straight games without scoring an offensive touchdown. They allowed one offensive TD in 16 playoff quarters; the Giants did not score an offensive point in Super Bowl XXXV. Overseen by DC Marvin Lewis, Baltimore's defense may be the best ever. The Ravens (12-4) ceded 10.3 points per game and in 20 games allowed only five teams to surpass 10 points. Ray Lewis earned Defensive Player of the Year acclaim and Super Bowl MVP honors, and his Peter Boulware-Jamie Sharper linebacker mates joined Rod Woodson and a host of locked-in role players to produce all-time defensive dominance.
I’d say there is a good argument for them being the best ever. The era they played in was far more offense friendly in terms of rules than the era of the old legendary defenses and the offenses they dominated included the best to to ever do it. If they played in the 80s when defenses could essentially murder offenses and get away with it, I think they would have been even better. It’s important to note though as good as those 3 were in the secondary it wasn’t just them. Their whole defense was full of star players one who doesn’t get enough recognition is Bobby Wagner he is an absolute beast of a player and one of the best linebackers there is. Throw in KJ Wright and a very stout pass rush and they were deadly.
They were easily top 3 defense ever, and arguably THE BEST! The Denver Broncos had the #1 offense in history, scoring over 600 points and over 6,000yrs in a season. Look at what this defense did to them in Super Bowl 48! The Broncos never stood a chance! We went to back to back Superbowls. We played two of the best Qb's to ever play the game in Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in Superbowl 49 where Wilson threw an intersection on the goal line. Should have ran the ball with BEASTMODE! Four chances to run the ball with Marshawn Lynch, we would've been guaranteed back to back Superbowl Champions! Everyone says that if they won that second one, that they were positive that they would've made a third Superbowl in a row. Losing Superbowl 49 just completely deflated the moral of the team and it just fell apart from there. You need to watch the other highlights of The Legion, where they show all the big hits from them. Brandon Browner 6'4 240lbs and Kam Chancellor 6'3 230 were some of the scariest hitters in their day. You can't name just two from that secondary. The best would be the trio of Sherman, Chancellor, Thomas. The other cornerback changed players throughout the years. GO HAWKS!!! 2023 SEAHAWKS IS THE ALL NEW LEGION OF SPOON!!! CHECK THEM OUT!!!
Just my 2 cents, but I think that team doesn't win the superbowl without Sherman and Russell. Chancellor and Thomas were 2 of the best safeties at the time, but the absolute best of the best on that team were Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson.
The Legion of Boom was dominant. The other element to the Seahawks in that era was Marshawn Lynch. He was a very unique individual with the heart of a lion. I encourage you to watch and react to some Beastmode highlights.
LOB is one of the top 3 defenses of all time in NFL history, and they aren’t #3 If I had to pick 2 players, it would have to be Kam Chancellor and Marshawn lynch. Kam put fear in every receiver, and marshawn was the heart of our offense/team. You could easily swap Sherman with chancellor. It’s hard to pick because so many players were elite on that team, especially on defense. Kam, Bobby, Cliff, Bennett, maxwell, Sherman, Thomas, so many ballers
I would have picked Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor for the best two but Richard Sherman, Russell, and many of the others were all so good, they played with a chip on their shoulder, many drafted in the lower rounds of the draft and shouldn't have won like they did, but also Coach Pete Carroll also should get a lot of credit for making them believe they can win. It was also good to hear former player turned long time Seahawks announcer Steve Raible's voice and his excitement at the calls.
#1 ALL TIME Defense.....crushing the #1 All Time offense 43-8 says enough. But they also lead the league in lowest points given up, yards given up for like 4 years straight
Seahawk fan here. Yes they were that good. It's a once in a lifetime defense.
What’s insane is that even aside from LOB, and even Brandon Browner, this Seahawks defense still had Bobby Wagner, K.J. Wright, and a d-line all in their prime.
it's good you added Browner in there. a lot of people forget about him but he was solid
@@JWalk-hl7dr I loved him, I’m not sure why he was excluded from this video. He was penalized a lot, which I was mostly fine with.
@@SHeltFC Yeah defense really made up for it anyway
Big red Bryant
@@JWalk-hl7dr And he also ultimately brought about their demise by playing a major part in the Malcolm Butler interception.
Im 58 yrs old and this was a top 5 defense. in no particular order i say. 70's Pittsburgh Steelers, 1985 Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and Legion of Boom, oh yeah. the Coach Gruden Tampa Bay Bucs
I might add the Gruden, Warren Sapp era of Tampa Bay to that excellent list.
@@kalohaggard1729 you're right, missed that one
The 70's Steelers wasn't the best in their own era. The Vikings and Rams had better defenses.
Kam Chancellor was the ideal defensive player. A mix of power, athleticism and pure effort.
❤
Because of the rules of today's NFL favors the offensive players over the defensive players, in my opinion the legion of boom are the greatest defense of all time.

Makes me wish that all the prime Seahawks players were playing for the Seahawks rn at the same time. It would be crazy.
06:00 THE LEGION OF BOOM had no equal.
They were so good that when they won the SB, they almost shut out the Broncos who were the most successful offense of all time that year
There are so many, like the 85 bears. 2000 ravens, 91 Redskins, those Steelers defenses in the 70s and Dallas in the 70s, 80s 49ers
Oh man, 80s 49ers were my team!
Best overall defense is always a question, but The Steelers-Ravens defenses in the mid 2000's had 5 different DPoYs. Those game's were different+.

Best complete defensive back combination ever. In their prime. Didnt last too long but still
After 2015 injuries killed them... LOB 2012-2015
85 bears probably #1 because they are so dominant, the 85 beats was 15 and 1. That one loss was to the Marino and Maimi Dolphins on MNF
Thanks, I appreciate your listening to my suggestion
Being as from Washington, it was pure chemistry. It difficult to be represented for so many reasons.
Check the graphic at 10:27. That should tell you everything you need to know about where the LOB ranks all-time.
Chancellor was the heart of the legion of boom. One of my favorite players of all time
08:05 CB RICHARD SHERMAN and RB MARSHAWN LYNCH.
The Legion years were great. Most attributable to Cam and Russ, Earl Thomas. Top 10 all time defense. Not top 5!! They needed a very dominate, unstoppable, hall of fame pass rusher to be top 5. 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
Dude, we had multiple great pass rushers, why would just one "elite" pass rusher be better than a handful of them?
1. 85 Bears (Monsters of the Midway) 2. 2000 baltimore Ravens
2002 Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a dominate year too,
I would put the LOB at 3 in terms of all time defenses, only behind the 2000 ravens and '85 bears. 2002 Bucs at a close 4.
Love my seahawks i remeber all of this earl thomas was so good he played single safty most of the time.
Top 3. It’s the combined effort of that Deffense.
I got the Legion of Boom as the best defense of all time over a 5 year span. I have the Ravens number 1 for year span.
Kam was my favorite player growing up 💪🏻💚💙go hawks
Sherman makes me proud to be a Richard. He even played for my fav team the 49ers before... 💯
If you want to see pain, check out the highlight reel of kam chancellor, in this defense there are no 2 players you can chose, its kam, richard,, bobby, k.j, cliff, michael, earl, lane, smith, the legion wasnt always about the corners and safeties, it was about the def line and linebackers too
You should react to the 2019 Tennessee Titans season 👀
49ers fan here. We still hate Seattle for this era…
Seahawks fan here. We're totally OK with this
Raiders fan here. I still hate the Seahawks since they were part of the AFC West.
11:20 I put them 2nd after '85 Bears.
70s Pitts burgh had Mean Joe Green , Lambert , while Dallas had Too Tall Jones and Randy white
Top 5 easily and probably top 3 but at that point any of the top 3 could be 1 all time. The three headed monster Kam, Sherman, and ET. Absolutely brilliant to watch and took over in big games.
Yeah top 5 easy but top 3 might be a bit of a stretch there was some other monster defenses out there
Oh heck ya.
#1 Defense, All Time (No Question)
Seahawks defense 2013-14 was the greatest defense of all time. Whole D was stacked.
Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch were the two most dominant players and most important players on that super bowl winning team. I have been to Seattle Seahawk fan since 1980 and I can tell you that with a straight face and without hesitation.
1986 Giants Had L Taylor, Banks, Carson literally the NFC east in the 80s was he'll playing against them
Seahawks were very good, but I offer the 2000 Baltimore Ravens as the #1
These Ravens won a Super Bowl despite going five straight games without scoring an offensive touchdown.
They were so much fun to watch! At the time Id put them #1.
Well that's obvious
The Legion of Boom is around that top 3-5 range all-time.
Definitely top 5 greatest defense of all time. Only because in Superbowl 48, they decimated the most prolific offensive of all time. 43-8.
Definitely top 5
Best defense Ever ! 70 s and 80s had great defenses but not with the rules they have today The Best Ever ! EVER ! EVER !
The Legion of Boom was dominant. The other element to the Seahawks in that era was Marshawn Lynch. He was a very unique individual with the heart of a lion. I encourage you to watch and react to some Beastmode highlights.
Best defense ever over multiple years. Best super bowl win ever
NFL had so many, some teams didn't make the Super like the 91 Eagles, that Jerome Brown and Reggie White
LOB is one of the top 3 defenses of all time in NFL history, and they aren’t #3
If I had to pick 2 players, it would have to be Kam Chancellor and Marshawn lynch.
I’d say top 3
85 bears
2011 ravens
2015 Seahawks
Number #1 defense 4 years in a row... and top #3 5 years in a row. Never will happen again. Best defense of the 21st century
Literally every starting defender was a superstar player
Go Hawks!
Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas were the heart of the boom.
85 Chicago bears were even more dominant look em up
All time top 10 maybe top 5
Back when the Seahawks had the LOB, when they weren't on offense the defense was also offense.
It was the best secondary of all time. if not entire defense
#1 ALL TIME Defense.....crushing the #1 All Time offense 43-8 says enough. But they also lead the league in lowest points given up, yards given up for like 4 years straight
1985 bears playoffs shut out the first two opponents and blew out the NE Patriots 46 to 10 which was the record at the time
