I get your points about Normal People and usually I also hate the “miscommunication trope”, but I actually understood it on this book. I believed that the characters had a hard time saying the important, vulnerable stuff sometimes. When I was reading it, I felt transported back to being that young and insecure. It’s easy to forget, bc I’m in a relationship for so long, so when the “trope” isn’t done well, I feel like screaming at the protagonists to just TALK. But, on Normal People I felt reminded of that feeling when the words just don’t come out.
Thank you for talking about the Duke and I. I have been really frustrated with the conversation around it. I loved the set up but the fact the assault didn't actually effect them and was glossed over really bothered me. Also it is making a romance out of using your partner and that really really bothered me. Especially when it has been suggested as a more risky modern Pride and prejudice.
@@bellaluna9572 yeah the show acted like it didn't even happen. And I feel like he was being gaslighted. Also most people didn't even notice the assault in the show.
@@cammie3578 I mean I like rewrote that whole debacle in my head without the assault in like 5 minutes. Just lazy lazy writing. It makes the last 2 episodes almost unbearable
Someone FINALLY called out the assault. It was completely glossed over in the show and I have seen NO ONE mention it online. I was starting to think I was the only one who had a problem with it.
What you said about agency and autonomy is so true. I can’t stand how often books make people who don’t want to get married/have children just change their minds because of ✨true love✨. Obviously that does happen sometimes in life, but some people just don’t change their minds on that???? Ugh, it’s so upsetting. “Love is awesome, but having the autonomy to make your own decisions is pretty awesome too” YES 💕
I’d never even heard about Sick Fux until this video, but the way you described your issues with it is exactly why I stopped reading dark romance and even some of the thrillers. Very well said!
Feel the EXACT same about normal people! Surprisingly one of my most disappointing reads was ninth house which i know was one of your favs! I’m glad you liked it!!!
Ahh I actually enjoyed Sick Fux by Tillie Cole and yes it was graphic which I was warned about but the story was so unique. It was so satisfying when both main characters got their revenge, Alice in wonderland aspect was so cool and I understood the romance. Our hero was in prison for 11 years and his love for our heroine is was kept him motivated to survive with all these criminals he was a kid when he was put in prison so basically grew up there.
After your take on the Sorcery of Thorns, I read it, because it sounded interesting, but after reading it, I was a little dissapointed. I usually devour books within 2-3 days, but I was reading this book for 2 weeks! The story was not bad, but the romantical aspect was very weak for me, I wanted more scenes between the characters to believe their chemistry. I wasn't expecting the type of romance we see in FBAA, but still, I just wanted more.
Yeah and I feel like the older books are the problematic ones which is okay for me. Up until 10 years ago is was completely "normal" and "acceptable" to be homophobic
I find Julia Quinn so interesting. The books are pretty old now but still readable - and then down stuff comes up that you wonder how it went through. I read Duke and I when it first came out and loved it. Read it before the show and wondered how I missed THAT scene 🤦♀️
totally agree w/ your opinions of normal ppl. the show is 10x better n it's identical page to page, dialogue to dialogue, scene to scene like down to every small detail to the book. so watching the series is more than enough
Lisa Klepas is hit or miss for me. I did not care for "Suddenly You" for me too and you hit the nail on the head! My most disappointing books of 2020 (released in 2020): "Mending the Beast" by Lacey Thom "The Man Who Has No Soul" by Victoria Quinn "Enchant The Night" by Amanda Ashley "My Big Fat Fake Wedding" by Lauren Landish
I read and watched normal people. And the show sort of slightly changed an order of events towards the end of the story and it made MUCH more sense than in the book. And I agree the actors made it so much better
Because you didn't enjoy Stalking Jack the Ripper as much, you should read These Shallow Graves. The romance is Newsies-esque, and the mystery is so good.
your phone case 😍😍😍 sorry I got distracted! My two most disappointing books of the year were Queen of Coins and Whispers by Helen Corcoran because the characters felt really dry (great plot though, highly recommend for fans of political fantasy) and The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall because the two main characters didn't do much? Meanwhile this quartet on the side had all the interesting stuff happen
Great video! Okay so, unpopular opinion, but Misconduct by Penelope Douglas was my most disappointing read of 2020. I read it directly after Birthday Girl and kind of really hated it. It was a let down in every way. I felt like Birthday Girl was so well done, while Misconduct had less interesting characters, less interesting plot, rediculous character motivations and a silly ending. I think what made it my most disappointing read though, was because I went from my fave read of the year to such a mediocre read, and they were the same author. I just was not expecting to have such an unsatisfying experience with Misconduct after loving Birthday Girl so much.
I totally agree with you about Sick Fux I was told it was a dark romance but I wish the trigger warning had been more specific I did not expect the graphic child abuse at all and tbh I wish I had DNF'd it. I also gave Blood and Ash 3 stars. I wouldn't have continued the series but I'd already bought the sequel Luckily I preferred the sequel

I kind of decided a while ago that I wasn't going to bother with reading Bridgerton and was just going to stick with watching the show, and I'm so far happy with that. I might try some other Julia Quinn books, but it's not a priority. But I will say, the only book that truly failed to meet my expectations was Daring and the Duke (the last in the Bareknuckle Bastards series), which I started in December and technically didn't finish till this week because it SUCKED. The rest of the series built it up too much and I could not support the couple.

I only had one last year, Invisible Girl by Lisa Jewell. Her writing is just impeccable but nothing about this was a thriller. Which is really the third time that’s happened with one of her novels but I ended up giving this 2 stars which crushed me lol.
I actually really liked the book! Although yes, thriller isn’t the word to describe it, I did enjoy it, I loved how it played out, especially cause of her writing! But wow? The third time! I was thinking of reading another book by hers, but I guess I should do more research lol

Have you finished all of the Bridgerton books? Because I actually found myself liking some of the later ones more, but I have yet to read book #8. 100% agree about the Duke and I. I need to find some historical romances that are a little less problematic although I have liked Julia Quinn for the most part despite that.
My most disappointing reads were If I never met you by by Mhairi McFarlane, UNDERCOVER BROMANCE!!! and The Hating Game. The heroine in Undercover Bromance was selfish and self-centered it was so difficult to like her. The romance for me was just so lacklustre and the way they got together at the end after Mack's secret was revealed annoyed me so much. If I never met you was so boring I DNF'd, I had such high expectations because of the praise it received from other booktubers but it just didn't do it for me. Also I am a teen and the characters were so much older than me that I just couldn't relate to them. The hating game was in no way bad but the ending was not that great and it received so much praise that I thought I would like it, it was a three star read for me.
Can you talk about more about The Hating Game? I’m a teen too and I’ve been meaning to pick it up, but the closer I get to picking it up the more stop signs I see! No spoilers obviously, but why did it not match? Was it the plot? Or how the ending was written?
@@jaseylinramos922 Sorry it took me so long to respond! I read this about 2 years ago. From what I remember I didn't feel it was a true enemies to lovers books because the hate between the two characters was not very strong which made it pretty disappointing. I wasn't a fan of the ending because of how things had played out in the career aspect of the book as well. I also remember not liking some of the scenes between the characters I didn't really feel the connection. But if you want my opinion on if you should read the book or not I still think you should it was not a bad read but it was disappointing.
It was very frustrating to finish the book, I was ready to DNF so many times. However the mini series was so good. The emotion, the acting, and the actors are *chef's kiss*. And it was adapted almost entirely word for word from the book, so you won't miss anything by not reading it.
i haven't seen the show, but loved the book. i think pick up the book if you're okay with little plot and just characters. if you're a plot reader i'd say skip the book because it might feel like the book meandered through plot at times. it's a super divisive book though, so i personally think it's worth the read just to see if you love it or hate it :)
I listen to everything on 2x speed and my mom asked if this was regular or sped up. I was like no, that’s why I like her. Also - Normal People. How dare you 😂
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who didn't like Stalking Jack the Ripper. I've heard nothing but good things about the book, but I ended up dnfing it. I just couldn't stand the characters!
Inked in Lies by Giana Darling was for sure mine. I’d been SO excited for it, hyping it up for months, and then reading it I was like... seriously? I just didn’t think the hero, Nova, loved the heroine like she loved him, he was an alpha to the point he was just a douche and it wasn’t cute or endearing. And I hated that I hated it bcos so many people loved it :(((
I do think Stalking Jack the Ripper is the worst book of the whole series lol. Audrey Rose is such a "not like other girls" girl at the beginning but she grows so much throughout the series which I think is such an interesting conversation about what happens when you go too far in trying to not be like the feminine ideal. However I've never understood why everyone loves Thomas, I thought he was like, way more annoying than he needed to be.
I've not read ALL of the Bridgerton books but if all that I read The Duke and I was, BY FAR, the worst, without a question (even though Benedict was an annoying asshole in his). But I will say Romancing Mister Bridgerton is my favorite historical romance of all time sooo... Just know that you started on the bottom and it's all (hopefully) uphill from that.
Ok really funny, I was just talking to my massage therapist yesterday about Bridgerton and how she is loving the show and just found out there were books and wanted to read them. I am definitely going to tell her that might be a bad idea lol which other video did you talk about your problems with it in more detail? I might show her that 🙃
Thank you! From blood and ash is overhyped so much! It's too long! It's quite dull. If it was stripped back to the 350 page mark it would of been so much better because it was dragged out! I don't get the hype! My first choice too for most disappointing book of the year!
Totally got you with From Blood and Ash. Same trope without anything unique, and imo it wasn’t very well written esp w the dialogue. Hawk could’ve been hot but he was basic and condescending as well without anything fresh so.... yeah v disappointing
I had the same reaction to Stalking Jack the Ripper. I feel like the hype was so high for this book and I had literally been hearing about this book for years. The writing was just annoying and Audrey's character was just so annoying. Thomas was just so unlikable too, I also felt like it kept playing into blatant sexism the entire time and their interactions were not fun to read.
My most disappointing read of 2020 was the vanishing half I didn't like any of the characters Stella's daughter was extremely annoying and spoiled desiree and her daughter were just bland and pointless, the only character who was complex and interesting was stella The author kept telling us that Stella's daughter had an easier life than desirees daughter but we were never shown that throughout the entire book everyone tears them both the same Im still not sure what the book was supposed to be was it meant to be an in depth character study of two people of different races or was it meant to be a message on how colorism manifests into inferior complexes? I still gave it 3 stars tho it was disappointing but far from the worst thing I've read
Ahhh I want to read blood and ash so badly! I’m a recently converted SJM groupie, so that may or may not work in my favor... But regardless, I just gotta know 😂
Stalking Jack the Ripper has such an intriguing title n premise but I have 0 tolerance for sexist, misogynistic, douche bags especially ones with antiquated opinions that i guess i have to pass on it.
My most disappointing book of the year was probably the betrothed by Kiera cass as I’ve never not loved one of her books until this one. Had the book not been written by her, I would’ve dnfed it but I’m sad because I didn’t like it.
honestly, same here! I read her Selection series and loved it, and assumed The Betrothed would be around the same, and then the revolution plot came in and i just put the book down and never picked it up again. Beautiful cover, but I'm starting to get sick of the surprise revolution plots

@@amandamuniz8231 my favorite was Leo’s book, but I adored the hard topics of PTSD after coming home from a war that Beatrix’s book tackled.
@@sassysarahreads Yes! Beatrix’s book is actually my favorite, then Poppy’s, then Leo’s probably, then I think Amelia and Winnie are tied, I enjoyed them but weren’t my favorites lol. I ADORE Beatrix’s, Poppy’s and Leo’s books 😍
Have you finished all of the Bridgerton books? Because I actually found myself liking some of the later ones more, but I have yet to read book #8. 100% agree about the Duke and I. I need to find some historical romances that are a little less problematic although I have liked Julia Quinn for the most part despite that.
i think i've read 5 of them? i was considering finishing the series but none of the books got more than a 4 stars from me so i don't know that i will
I hate the lack of quotation marks in Normal People too. I finished it, but was equally disappointed.
I need to use eschew a lot more in 2021. Inspiration.
Normal people sounds like the must frustrating book ever, maybe I’m going to watch the mini series🤔
It was very frustrating to finish the book, I was ready to DNF so many times. However the mini series was so good. The emotion, the acting, and the actors are *chef's kiss*. And it was adapted almost entirely word for word from the book, so you won't miss anything by not reading it.
@@TheClaraChandra Agreed!
@@TheClaraChandra so I’m definitely watching the series!
i haven't seen the show, but loved the book. i think pick up the book if you're okay with little plot and just characters. if you're a plot reader i'd say skip the book because it might feel like the book meandered through plot at times. it's a super divisive book though, so i personally think it's worth the read just to see if you love it or hate it :)
Oddly enough, one of my most disappointing books of 2020 was A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire 💀
oh nooooooo
Right! It was awful
Feels like a cozy day, just what I need ^^
i am so happy to see that other people were disappointed by fbaa bc for the longest time i thought it was ME
I listen to everything on 2x speed and my mom asked if this was regular or sped up.
I was like no, that’s why I like her.
Also - Normal People. How dare you 😂
don't worry, we don't care about the thumbnail or the set-up, it's about YOU!
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who didn't like Stalking Jack the Ripper. I've heard nothing but good things about the book, but I ended up dnfing it. I just couldn't stand the characters!
You are not alone I finished but wished I didn't. I tried the authors new book and DNF'd it as well
Inked in Lies by Giana Darling was for sure mine. I’d been SO excited for it, hyping it up for months, and then reading it I was like... seriously? I just didn’t think the hero, Nova, loved the heroine like she loved him, he was an alpha to the point he was just a douche and it wasn’t cute or endearing. And I hated that I hated it bcos so many people loved it :(((
Glad to know I'm not the only one that's not a fan of Lisa Kleypas!
Just know that you started on the bottom and it's all (hopefully) uphill from that.
i really liked that one! it wasn't perfect for me, but i did enjoy it
Ok really funny, I was just talking to my massage therapist yesterday about Bridgerton and how she is loving the show and just found out there were books and wanted to read them. I am definitely going to tell her that might be a bad idea lol which other video did you talk about your problems with it in more detail? I might show her that 🙃
i believe it's in my i read 5: mass market paperback romances video
I LOVE your videos!!!
Thank you! From blood and ash is overhyped so much! It's too long! It's quite dull. If it was stripped back to the 350 page mark it would of been so much better because it was dragged out! I don't get the hype! My first choice too for most disappointing book of the year!
Yes, I found Suddenly You so disappointing! The first half was five stars, the second half was...what
my favorite Quote "All in all he sucked, she sucked, the book sucked The end.
Totally got you with From Blood and Ash. Same trope without anything unique, and imo it wasn’t very well written esp w the dialogue. Hawk could’ve been hot but he was basic and condescending as well without anything fresh so.... yeah v disappointing
Ya'll better not be sleeping on these video links Chandler's putting in her bios.
Ah FBAA and Normal People were two of my favorites this year 😂
Oof agree on From Blood And Ash. My biggest disappointment of last year.
I would like to see you review kresley coles game maker series
from blood and ash was such a disappointment. i’m so sad i really wished i liked the book
Kingdom of the wicked is a better Kerri Maniscalco book. There were some issues but still enjoyable. Stalking Jack the Ripper was just subpar.
starting that one soon!
I had the same reaction to Stalking Jack the Ripper. I feel like the hype was so high for this book and I had literally been hearing about this book for years. The writing was just annoying and Audrey's character was just so annoying. Thomas was just so unlikable too, I also felt like it kept playing into blatant sexism the entire time and their interactions were not fun to read.
thank GOD i'm not the only one that didn't like _Stalking Jack the Ripper_ !!! the love for the "hero" makes me ill
Ooo yes I agree with stalking Jack
This is totally off topic but where is your phone pop socket from? I think that’s what they are called... yours looks really cool
etsy! it's an agate slice
My most disappointing read of 2020 was the vanishing half
I didn't like any of the characters Stella's daughter was extremely annoying and spoiled desiree and her daughter were just bland and pointless, the only character who was complex and interesting was stella
The author kept telling us that Stella's daughter had an easier life than desirees daughter but we were never shown that throughout the entire book everyone tears them both the same
Im still not sure what the book was supposed to be was it meant to be an in depth character study of two people of different races or was it meant to be a message on how colorism manifests into inferior complexes?
I still gave it 3 stars tho it was disappointing but far from the worst thing I've read
stalking jack the ripper is like one of the ten books i've dnfed throughout my life lol
i definitely agree with your thoughts on from blood and ash it was way too long and info-dumpy, but i did overall enjoy it!
Ahhh I want to read blood and ash so badly! I’m a recently converted SJM groupie, so that may or may not work in my favor... But regardless, I just gotta know 😂
I'm about halfway through and I really like it.
i'm sure you will enjoy it!! it's definitely not a bad book
My most disappointing read in 2020 was Ready Player Two 😒😩😑
In my opinion, the most hyped books are almost always a complete disappointment.
Please make a video on most enjoyable book's of 2020 plz🤗
best books is up :)
Stalking Jack the Ripper has such an intriguing title n premise but I have 0 tolerance for sexist, misogynistic, douche bags especially ones with antiquated opinions that i guess i have to pass on it.
I stopped reading stalking jack the ripper for those exact reasons😂
Here early???? On a WORK DAY?? Don’t tell my boss 🤪
@@ItsBronze yeah same. I don’t think I’ll continue on with the series. I’ve never been more disappointed by a book
I hated how the show and book glossed over the sexual assault scene. Yikes man
