I don't know why but 2d is still appealing to me, there is something magical in it that 3d doesn't have...maybe because it's HAND-DRAWN in paper!-it's just me.

Watching this in 2020. At 26:07 they start talking about whether 2D animation will make a comeback or not. Aaron was right mentioning that if people cared enough that it will re-emerge, as Klaus came out the following year and distributed by the streaming service: Netflix. This man has great foresight. More and more 2D series, perhaps not on the level of Klaus but are now still being released. Not to mention Japan who are doing some amazing things, as usual.

Anybody can learn this, it may seem impossible for beginners, one advice I would like to give you is get the Animator's survival kit build up your skillset by starting with the basics, also study different animators to know the techniques and not just study you can't achieve this until you put it on paper. Once your done with the basics get them into your bloodstream which will free you from expressing.

2D animation and 3D animation should never be in a hostile relationship. Saying one can completely replace the other one is like saying peeing can completely replace pooing. (bad analogy, maybe). They just serve different purposes, in different time. Just like sometimes you need to pee, and sometimes you need to poo.
Animation is a big world and it is definitely a vessel which can contain both doctrines. In the beginning stage of developing a 3D animation, having 2D animation knowledge as for keyshot and character design drafting is a huge plus. That can smooth out the whole animation process as you don't have to go directly into the 3D software to sculpt the whole thing or import a model and stretch the model to attain what you want. Simply take out a paper and use a pencil to 2D draft will save you tons of time and energy. (who else agree with me? I just find the initial drafting stage being very limiting when using 3D software as a drafting and idea development tool. When you are in thinking mode and have tons of ideas, the requirement to press different keys or to switch between tools is just so hindering, even when you are so good at the shortcuts.)
And then, after making some drafting with 2D knowledge, you can scan the drawing and enter the 3D development environment. Import model, rigging, texturing....... etc. During the process, sometimes, your brain can switch back to the 2D animation thinking mind. Say for example, when a model is so stiffed after several attempts, you can take a paper out and use a pencil to try drafting in 2D animation. Inter-reference the 2D drawing with the 3D rigged animation which you have just created. Because sometimes, when you have spent so much time staring at the computer, your brain starts to become stiff. So having another tool which you can switch between can make the creation process "more lively". Our brain is just not a one way street. Sometimes it needs another kind of sensory stimulation to awaken us back.
So basically, having both 2D animation and 3D animation knowledge intertwined creates a great development and creation process.

I'm interested in seeing how you do lipsync(or any audio synced animation in general) with paper. I understand how its done in 3D/digital but I don't know how you would effectively time animation to audio on paper.
No one really shows you the process of HOW to do it online; just the final result. :(

You just inspired me to create a video on this topic! To put it simply though, you would record the audio first and note the sounds audited ( veeeeery slowly) on what is referred to as an x sheet using the help of a software program that allows you to scrub ( aka listen to manually) the audio frame by frame, like adobe animate of after effects. Then, using the the audio as a guide for your action, you number your drawings to the appropriate sound on each frame. It sounds more intimidating than it is, but I hope that helps a little!

Before computer. In the old Studio I go to that does Hanna-Barbera TV series in the late 80's and early 90's, there's a sound editor who does this along with the shows director doing it. They use an old magnetic tape player and a simple stop-watch. They would play the sound again and again and timed everything with the hand stop-watch and write the mouths (mouth flaps a,b,c,d,e,o,n codes) in the X-sheet (or Dope sheet). I was told they also used a metronome to time all the voices and sound FX by a half second beat. I was told in the old Disney films they would use the dialogue recorded in a movie film strip where a sound graph is burned in the film, then time everything by a foot or a half-foot of film (16 frames and 8 frames).

I was doing this sort of thing(when they had camcorders back in the 90s) I didn't receive any mentorship, just did my own experiments. Figured a lot out on my own.
Used a styrofoam head to create mouth movements..👄👅💋 You can approach animation I'm so many different ways. I did it as a joyful hobbie instead of an occupation.A quote from Einstein: "The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination."
What is it about Einstein's words that surprises us? What gives us pause? It's not that he includes knowledge in his definition of intelligence. What's surprising is that he mentions imagination in the same breath. He did this so often that one wonders if Einstein was trying to tell us something very important.

Now I am doing 2D head manikin and 2D hand manikin.

You can get it at Cartooncolour, cartoonsupplies, or lightfootltd. It's pricey but is very durable and has a wonderful tooth to it and translucency. The Desk is a custom Disney desk, they sometimes go up for auction every couple of years for a couple thousand dollars, they're super heavy and cost a lot to transport.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but was he doing straight ahead animation??

at 22:00 he skips ahead to the final drawing, and then draws the middle ones after. so no, this is considered pose-to-pose animation, not straight-ahead.

JONAHonTHEhill: I’m only a beginner in animation, but I’d say *practice* and more specifically, practice in anatomy.

Will your acting for animators videos be part of your complete animation course? I’m thinking of buying the complete animation course!
