We're the same age, and I can remember going down to the suburban record shop in my greatcoat and monkey boots and getting this fine EP.
Had very small grooves but was stereo (still quite rare in 1970), and this version has that crashing wah-wah guitar at the beginning.
      Respect to TheRunner75 for uploading.

40 yrs ago and still to hear anything remotely similar,a truly unique masterpiece. I doubt anyone could put it across anywhere near as effectively as Roger Chapman either. As for the lyrics; Thomas Grey,Shakespeare,Milton etc would struggle. All round 10 out of 10.

Absolute masterpiece....still treasure the EP that I bought on the back of hearing a Family track in the film The Adventurers in 1970 called Young Love. I don't think that was ever released, but I found it on RUclips today after watching the film again. Lots of memories of when I was 17.....Roger Chapman, what a voice!

This was the track that introduced me to Family. Absolutely great music. I have an album (vinyl) that I bought way back in the 70's that has this and other great tunes are on. It's called "Best of Family".
Some sleeve notes from that album that sum up this great and underrated band, written by Al Clark:
"Family, resolutely uncompromising to the last gasp of a triumphant farewell tour in Autumn 1973, endured the crucifying burden of watching their purportedly principled contemporaries from the exploratory late sixties cross the ocean to become grotesque, crowd-pleasing parodies of themselves, glibly counting the dollars as each moment of their professional lives ticked away like a key in a toy clowns back".

First time I saw them was at The Marquee just after 'Dolls House' came out. I was 16 and had to blag my way in in those days. Chappo scared me shitless when he was in full flight! From the front row all you could see was the whites of his eyes as he trashed yet another tambourine! The original band were just astonishing!

Saw Chappo last night at the Tivoli, Wimborne. I remember an interview with Charley Whitney from the early 70s, he said that in is youth, if he saw Chappo coming down the road towards him he would cross the road to avoid him, such was his reputation in Leicester.

I must have seen them a dozen times between 68 and 70, the last time being at Fairfield Halls in 70, where they recorded the live side of Anyway. Live, there was no-one to touch them. The most underrated group of all time and definitely one of the top ten bands of all time.

I can still remember when and where I was when I first heard this - eating Sunday dinner with my parents when it came on the radio during the 'chart rundown' on Radio 1. My parents were not at all impressed, but I was! It was the beginning of the discovery of a whole different kind of music for me, having only been listening to and buying chart singles at the time…
I've since learned about the origins of this song in Greek Mythology- this influence was acknowledged by Roger Chapman at one point.
The 'weavers' are actually female! It's based on the story of the mortal Arachne and the goddess Athena.
This song by a band called Spiral Dance reveals more of the original story, and I think musically they may well have been influenced by The Weavers Answer

Merlina, very similar for Me! I had started to listen to some different than chart Music but always remember TOTP had an alternative spot . I was 14 when this came out and My Parents did not understand! My Dads comments were always about a bunch of 'Gakeshaws'! I never really found out what He meant (bless him) but I knew I wanted some of it and this just expanded my really registered along with King Crimson!
