As tennis players, we all want that powerful and dominant serve that wins us a lot of matches.
To achieve a powerful serve, there are many factors that go into it…
But a factor which not many players are aware of is related to the flight of the ball toss.
There’s a specific ball flight that all the best servers in the world achieve, and it helps to get their body into a coiled position.
Learning this ball flight on your toss is very simple, but can quickly lead to a more powerful serve if done correctly!
In this video, OTI Instructor James Ludlow breaks down this unique ball flight and gives you 2 simple drills to work on it.

Great video, James, but besides the shoulder turn, I wonder if maintaining momentum and continuing the toss AFTER the ball is released (until the arm is vertical) also contributes to the right to left movement.

Good video. I simply can’t be consistent with a right to left movement but do well with a straight toss. Most coaches even suggested it for me. There are pros such as Pliskova who use the straight toss technique and have great serves as well

Yes, Pliskova turns the upper body more after the toss release but we find that challenging for most players

In the past, I found that her technique tended to give me less control over my apex target, so now I fully coil and open my chest before my release, so as to keep my tossing shoulder and arm straighter. @@OnlineTennisInstruction

The J toss gave me fits until I realized (thanks to Patrick Mortaglu's video on eye dominance) that I'm left eye dominant and left handed, so the J toss was hard for me to see with my weak eye out front. Moving to the 45 degree toss helped me immensely since my dominant eye can track that toss easier. Federer and Murray are left eye dominant so the J toss works well for them.
