MEET LAURA McCABE! On her Beading Master Classes, Bead Art & Beading Materials - Interview #1
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 июл 2024
- Here is my first in-depth conversation with renowned bead artist and educator Laura McCabe of Connecticut. After showing images of her beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces, we focus on the five Beading Master Classes Laura's curated in the last few years. Each Master Class explores one theme in depth, from Wildflowers and Eyeflowers to Oceans, Insects and Codices. We'll view images and samples from all of them. Prepare to be amazed.
A second meeting with Laura will be posted on this channel soon. She'll be sharing videos of her beading studio, cabinet of curiosities, antique beaded bag collection, butterfy hatching area - plus her parents describing what Laura was like as a child (hint: prodigy!). Date and time TBA - probably early April.
During a third meeting, Laura and I will be LIVE here on RUclips - answering your live questions - as many as we can fit in. Date and time TBA. Probably mid-April.

The Backstory
During the months Laura spent working on her first Master Class, people kept telling her that the beading world wasn't ready for such an approach - that it was destined to fail. Fortunately, Laura trusted her instincts and kept going. In the end, she was right. All of her Master Classes have sold out within hours of being posted to her website. In fact, her very first Master Class nearly sold out in 5 hours, rewarding the months of effort and expense she'd invested - and risked - to prepare it.
What Laura's Master Classes Offer
Each class comes with a dozen or more videos plus a beautifully illustrated book of instructions, a virtual field trip, one set of beads for each week or project, inspirational ideas and images, access to a private Facebook group, and a link to enter a private shop on Laura's website where she offers specialty beads and other components for her Master Class students only. Most precious of all, students can meet directly with Laura in weekly group Zoom meetings where Laura becomes their mentor, creativity coach and beading advisor.
"Cracking the Creativity Code"
This is a first for the history of beadwork. Never before have university-level courses been offered online in the beading field. In addition to lessons in beading design and technique, Laura teaches students how to "crack the creativity code" as she puts it, inspiring them to start designing pieces of their own - while enjoying the inevitable learning curve.
In the process, her students learn that they are far more creative than they'd ever imagined: that creativity is their birthright. Her students have gone on to make innovative pieces that Laura loves - and features in a Gallery page on her website. This is exactly what Laura intends: to help students become artists.
Laura's Favorite Beading Techniques
Laura's favorite beading techniques include peyote stitch, herringbone stitch, chenille stitch, and right angle weave, among others. Apart from these techniques, she also teaches bead embroidery and tasseling. All of these techniques appear in her Master Classes, especially peyote stitch and herringbone stitch, which she blends into a single technique.
Opening Minds
What impresses me most about Laura is her dedication to creating the best possible experience for her students - while also being the best possible teacher. Laura opens minds with her wisdom and humor - not to mention, her spirit of adventure. An open mind is a powerful thing, especially when it comes to beading.
