  • Let's take a look at the 74LS86 Quad 2-Input XOR Gate. I have always found that these were one of the most versatile logic gates. If you can spend some time playing around with them they will become easy and useful to include n your designs.

These days I only use breadboards to find the value of resistors for LEDs. For everything else, I prefer to simulate, as it is a lot quicker and no more damaged components.

I'm still used to a (very) small amount of breadboarding. Back in the day I tried simulation, but back then it was inaccurate or expensive (choose 1). What do you use?

For Texas Instruments parts - Tina-TI, for Analog Devices - LT Spice. For everything else I have a 10 years old copy of Multisim/Uliboard (they no longer improve/develop it, but these days they are asking $800 per year!). Unfortunately complex chips do not have any spice models, so I can only simulate parts of the circuitry.

It works quite well for analog stuff like amplifiers, but then manufacturers like Toshiba are so lazy that despite making some complementary pairs for 10-20 years, they have only managed to produce model for NPN. Luckily, you can always substitute models of similar transistors from another manufacturer.

Today hobbyists are using free Kicad. I have it installed, but knowing how much time it took to learn Multisim/Ultiboard I hesitate to try something new. I write in short parts, hoping that psychotic Comrade YT will not block it.

@@jakubczajka4275 Thanks for the input. I have had LT Spice installed on one of my computers for a while, but have not proceeded with it. I guess I should at some time..
