So I've changed my mind on some things lately. I did the GWOT and always carried tqs exposed to sandstorms, particulate fouling (was a tanker), etc. Quick to get at, gtg. But, i live in northern Canada, where i can be exposed to windstorms, ice storms, dust and flying grass, and basically a lot of shit that'll gum up velcro. I carry one exposed for quick use, because a 2nd can always be applied, but also several others in fully enclosed pouches to protect them as much as i can to ensure their viability.
Im no longer in, but still have one on every buttstock on every rifle. Just also carry very protected but easy to access ones. SORD TQ pouches work for me.
    Just my CAD$0.02

The material of the CAT is proned to environmental degradation, relatively quickly. I recommend using a covered pouch or TQ protector by Defense Mechanisms.

Yes, i get them for free so I switch them out very regularly to avoid them degrading.

Best way to get around this is to have designated and clearly marked training tourniquets (could paint them, use tape, or just buy/request through supply brightly colored ones), and bring those ones to training. Maybe you keep one real TQ in training for freak accidents, but that one has to be regularly inspected, and preferably kept in a fully enclosed TQ pouch. That way you can keep using the training ones until they literally fall apart without any problem.

Is this a relatively new practice? When I was in (2014-2019) all we had was the TQ in the IFAK.

What’s preached to us is to have them where indicated per unit sop and have as many as possible anywhere else that it will fit.

Having at least four tourniquets is fairly standard for infantrymen, depends on the unit. Mine has none because we're a Guard unit lol. But one in the left ankle pocket, one in the right shoulder pocket, one in the IFAK, and one more somewhere else accessible and visible on your kit is more or less what one can expect in a unit that isn't trash.
