Really perfect timing for this episode. First the LA Times declines to endorse, prompting editors to resign like they mentioned near the end of this episode, and then just today WaPo declined to endorse cause of Bezos and now editors have begun resigning there too. Crazy times.

Hi John. Do you think we make a mistake individualizing fascism when the culprits are always the same ?
    Hitler's enablers:
    - The church
    - The media (radio)
    - The rich people (banks, defense companies, etc.)
    Trump's enablers:
    - The church
    - The media ( TV and social)
    - The rich folks
Maybe we need to make more emphasis on these 3 culprits

Question: Jon wants a shorter campaign season. Would he like to see a change in how we choose Electors, so that, instead of political parties choosing people loyal to party, we ask voters to nominate people who they believe are the most trustworthy as Electors? Each Congressional District could send their most-nominated citizen to the State Capitol in December. Two more nominees from voters, selected from citizens within the State would round out the designated number of Electors for each State. Two more nominees, from among all citizens of the nation, could provide a pool of names for Electors to consider, in case they need any inspiration. A diversity of views would be represented on that special Monday in December.

The defining "solutions" for the problems presented by these same thinkers isn't donate to the Democrats and hope the system changes from the inside. It's a form of revolution. The sooner we all stop scratching our asses and asking "what do we do?" as if the answer hasn't been there for years and instead figure out how we do it, the sooner we can bring back some hope for our future.

One of my favorite ridiculous things to say is, "among Hitler's more minor crimes..." Like any villain, Hitler committed numerous crimes, both major and minor. He's rightfully known mostly for his most heinous major crimes. But he also committed some minor ones. For example, among Hitler's more minor crimes, he single-handedly ruined a perfectly good style of facial hair! That's a perfectly good mustache style, forever taken from the canvas of acceptable human expression. Also, if you look at US census records, the popularity of the name "Adolf" just takes a precipitous tumble right around 1940 or so. And that's just not fair. I'm sure there were plenty of Adolfs throughout history that did a lot of good in the world. Now you can't name a kid Adolf without everyone thinking you're a Nazi! Hitler is mostly and rightfully known for his major crimes, but we also shouldn't forgive him for his minor ones! That man stole both a facial hair style and a first name from us. And while he is rightfully known for his major crimes, I won't forgive him for the minor ones either.

So the argument from the Billionaires perspective is that the system works this way and wouldn’t you also want to throw all your money at things you deem important. Seems logical but really just speaks to a sense of self righteousness.
I agree, I would love to give as much financial support to things I care about. However, if money is speech and is going directly to political campaigns, then everyone should have the same amount of “free speech”. Even if they funding things I want, on principle they shouldn’t.
Campaign donations are not philanthropy. If money is representation and ultimately controls legislation, we should all have the same playing field.
Also, if you haven’t, check out the Powell memo.
PS. Modern day libertarians feel like the remnants of the old Jeffersonian yeoman farmers that are still angry they never got their free labor utopia and now this is there best shot.

around minute 29 - Deregulation is a tough problem, we need industry regulation because, well history, environment, oil spills, labor abuses and predatory practices... but a lot of the regulations we have are based on watered down bills, that are not always clear on scope and intent. The "rules" developed by agencies, have become a bureaucratic nightmare for small business owners, farmers - and consumers. Exxon doesn't have to clean up it's own mess. Banks get bailed out instead of penalized for creating the mess, people lose their pensions, get stuck with the Enron energy bills, and Wall street thrives but let a small business owner forget to sign a form or a farmers cow farts and that's a big deal... It's kind of like they apply the regulations from the bottom up and never quite get to the top.

Why does no one talk about the one thing Ross Perot said, would help end special interest influence in congress. Single item voting in congress. End bundling of unrelated issues. As this IS how special interests are served by congress. Put the bad with the good. Then to get the good part done, you have to agree to also do something totally unrelated that serves a very select few. Often something that is bad for the rest of us.

  • @lananiella

All anyone talks about is the money. How much there is and where it comes from. No one ever focuses on where it GOES. No one ever talks about *following* the money. We need a comprehensive breakdown of all that with details of who is RECEIVING all these billions.
If, as I suspect most of it goes to the all of the different forms of media for ads, then why isn't the story about the conflict of interest in how the media reports all this? Isn't it in their best interests to manipulate the narrative and keep the pots at full frenzied boil to keep the controversies & vitriol at maximum to heighten the drama? Not just for the clicks, but to encourage more and more donations from a frightened angry public so the parties buy MORE ADS to combat the perceived rising danger of the other side.
I think if we are to begin to ever seriously combat the insane amounts of money in elections & the corruption it causes, since we can't combat the INflow, maybe we need to regulate the OUTflow. Perhaps having spending caps on how much can be used in each sector of ad buys. Maybe even regulating how many ads can run each day. Wouldn't THAT be nice?

And Trump and Vance along with billionaires like Musk and Bezos do the same thing.

Everyone in America seems to think that you just need the right candidate. But policy comes from the advocates for the candidate. You need to become an indispensable key to power in order to have any influence in directing power. No one rules alone. There are certain voting blocks and individual donors you need to attain power and then other blocks or individuals you need to stay in power. If you want change you need to be one of those keys, preferably one that is needed to both attain and retain power. So we're doomed to this cycle because those who rise to power are often psychopathic and it makes sense, because who is better suited to grab power than someone who will do anything to have it?

Wu tang, I'm familiar with the English system, I don't have a problem with it, the problem is the house and senate have to pass anything, you want to watch Pelosi laughing almost historically where she had to cut herself off, or the stern one, where she says no about regulating congress, insider info and campaign financing reform. The problem is the house and senate, have to pass everything. It happens in a presidential race. There's very little money, vs. win loosing, in fact the only time in 100 years was Trump Vs. Hillary. The flame thrower never wins, we have had 7 times since WWII, where on came close, but they never win. An example of corporate vs. people, to use Bill Clinton, not that I like him in any way because of Island ties, but, in the late 1970s-1980s, he ran on a campaign of ultra environmentalism and making sure 25% of US forest aren't cut. GP (Georgia pacific), one of 5 timber companies on earth, the same ones cutting the Congo and Amazon right now, financed to such a degree his adversaries in Arkansas, that he lost. He then ran the next cycle, having dropped every environmental thing and won, backed by the same people finance wise...mostly I assume because of the island leash, but still..he won and became president....AI is somewhat BS. What scientist found is its really easy to write a short program with a feedback loop, that corrects itself, take the 5% top hits for parameters X, as an example, and they can do crazy things. If for example I take one that has the top 7 of 35 psychological behaviors of humans, I can sell anyone almost anything with a few cycles, they're easy to write, but don't think. What they sell them to the population is, they think. Thus the BS. people have a problem with we can be minusculeized behavior wise with such simplicity. Real AI by definition, 1950 coined, is I as a program or robot, have to be self aware, and have to be able to generate thoughts that are unique to myself. There is nothing close to this, never, no one has been able to achieve it, but they had the forethought of what we would become in 1950, to make a criteria for something based on computers for this. Maybe the problem is like rats, monkeys, ants, we can be in a small (small to me is a 20 page computer script) algorithm, made to fit into such narrow psychological behavior pattern like any animal, made to behave, or analyzed in such a way as to predict 99.999% of any action a particular individual will make. The current science theme is, take a media hype term, use it in grants, and then accumulate funding. Not, advance science. In America, like the General said, there's no choice, A or B is your choice. The electoral system, 2 x it saved America, in 1930 it prevented the first democratically elected Communist from being elected. Kennedy won against Nixon is an example. I want the whole earth to win, not country by country which is are behavior. yes courage. The thing I think about Harris is, I don't think, here making her way through the system, that she can do anything she wants, literally anything, and doesn't have to listen to a single person in the senate or house, as far as what they want...she can even make presidential decrees, and introduce and force both houses to vote one anything she wants, 100 a day if she wanted, over and over again...most of them end up a drone with some chain, which I always try and avoid the chain like Clinton and the 2 12 year olds on an island, but they try for something, to make them do whatever they want. I personally think she is a drone. She no longer thinks, she just does.

Ken, if you think MTG and AOC are equally extreme, I hope you have no influence over people.

Decoding the metaphor: a swamp actually plays important ecological functions; what Trump did was to turn a swamp into a cesspool.

Not trying to be a jerk. I watched this on my TV. When John sits so close, it’s a giant head. The giant head of an old man on my TV screen. And there’s dandruff on his shirt. 👕 Jon, you can adjust the font. You do not need to sit so close. You’re rich. Invest in some good shampoo, bud. Love ya ❤️ 💗

@@kamalnijhawan9592 you know, I like a close-up of Jon Stewart as well it’s just it’s very close. You know what I mean it’s a lot of Jon Stewart. It’s a lot of face. It’s distracting awkward. Sometimes I’m like naked you know what I mean like I’m getting dressed and then there is giant Jon Stewart head😬

sorry the context is really important tho. you don't get to cherry pick one donation from a billionaire and be astonished by it in a context where this is allowed right now and it will be allowed at least until this election ends (and the same thing happened on the other side, musk donated more and is also using the weight of his platform to try and bend reality, how much is that worth) - like why be shocked by it? it just makes no sense

this is a depressing conversation - it’s why young people are not voting and it’s the definition of insanity - it sucks- the misogyny, the patriarchy, capitalism, greed, hatred, war, violence, climate collapse

Well. It’s the young people’s future they are sitting out. They will (I suppose) get what they put their energy towards. They will be angry when the autocracy removes their internet. But then, as the country spirals into chaos (if another trump) it really won’t make much of a difference. I can imagine a world where WE are the the Germany of old and the WW will be to shut us down before we can destroy the world.

The dichotomy of the human is to be, a taker, or a giver! The placement of human value is the question of the new millennia. WHAT is our worth based on, credits or wisdom? Dig deep and ask yourself what comes next in this vein.
