  • Roller Coaster is a classic wood coaster at Lagoon that recently celebrated its 100th birthday. Designed by John A. Miller back in 1921, the coaster has an extensive history of changes. It was most recently refurbished by Great Coasters International and received 2 new Millennium Flyer trains. And it's running quite well for its age!

A clarification on the trains. They are NOT Millennium Flyers from GCII, but instead “GCII Custom Trains.” The Custom Trains were built with the headrests for riders 46”-50”, lapbar monitoring system, and were constructed to run specifically on Roller Coaster’s Track, including the use of Switchable ECBs.

There are only an exceptionally few more wooden coasters that are less likely to be rmc-ed. This coaster is a registered historic landmark, an Icon of Lagoon, received a recent update to the station and trains, and still is one of the major draws for lagoon. Additionally Lagoon has been designing or building new coasters and typically only reaches out to traditional manufactures for trains.
In short there is no need, and no desire, and even if there was, a historical society would have to sign off on everything RMC would do, greatly limiting what could be done.

I rode this with both the custom millenium flyers and the ptc trains and I gotta say it rides way better with the custom millenium fliers. When it had the PTC trains the ride was substantially rougher and i didn’t really like that much. The gci overhaul was much needed and drastically helped the ride in my opinion.

I rode this during the 100th anniversary year and it was my roughest-ever experience on the Roller Coaster. Might have just been a heavier slate of guests than usual, or there may have been some minor maintenance hicccups.
I hope they got it straightened out, because even though it definitely shows its age in the design, it's still a pretty fun ride usually. Always worth a circuit or two. Looking forward to another 100 years!

I don't like heights so this ride is perfect for me. The oldies are always the perfect height. Back then it was more about fun and less about thrills or over the top thrills. its a shame its less like that these days, parents always forcing their kids to go on high rides. Not everyone wants to. Even some adults. I want to have fun not feel scared. The mouse coasters are another example.

I got to ride it with its most recent trains and the ones that came before it. I may be in the minority here, but I really loved the older trains more than the newest ones. Especially the lapbar. On the older trains, the lap bar started to click immediately as you started to pull it down. Allowing to be a few inches off your body if you wanted for great airtime, and they would still dispatch even in thay scenario. But with the newer trains, it has to be a set distance down before the computer recognizes it as locked or before even hearing the first click. As is for some, I have gained a lot of size since my youth and trying to ride it now, depending on the day, I have to have the attendants push hard to get it to lock, or I am able to do it myself but it is still tight. Every other coaster in the park I have no trouble with even with my size.
Although I am trying to lose some size off the mid section, and even if I am able to, I would still prefer the older trains lapbars as I could still keep the bar a couple inches from my waist whether I am big still or not.

    Canobie Coaster would say:
For a ride as old as it is, Roller Coaster rides smoother than you'd expect. The ride sounds rough from the sounds the trains make, but it actually tracks well. Some of the valleys I specifically noted are a bit bumpy, but it's overall fairly smooth for a wood coaster. That is probably helped by the ride's modest speed. That ties into my next point though. This ride does not have the strongest pacing. You noticeably slow down atop several turns and hills. I can look past a lack of speed if all the hills still deliver, but there are a few on this ride that don't quite offer the airtime I expected.
So what would I rate Roller Coaster?
