The BBC Doctor Who account just posted about the Sonic specifically! 😂 It’s like they knew! 👀

The sonic screwdriver is a tough one for me to discuss, considering how - frankly - I'd then be having a tug-of-war mindset against my childhood.
But now that I've rewatched series 1-4, I have realized that, (other than Eccleston,) none of the Doctor's are at all innocent on using the sonic, but again, there are Doctor's who've used the tool more than others, (like Smith and Whitaker,) however, I feel that my point still stands.
As for the sonic being a tool with Gatwa...in my opinion, (for my innerchilds sake to shut up,) I'd say he could - have - one, but he wouldn't use it as often, (like Doctor's from the classic series.) And for him potentially - not having one - well, perhaps it can add opportunity for Gatwa's Doctor to show unique and whackt ways on solving problems, (like perhaps using a paperclip for opening doors or having other gadgets.)
And as a lover for Pertwee, I think the varied amount of scientific gadgets could be a good idea.

The most important thing for the showrunner to do regarding the sonic is lay down the ground rules so it doesn't have one episode where it can do something crazy that would help in most episodes.
If it was up to me I'd go back to basics
    - Reverse Polarity (its a must), which is synonymous with opening and closing things
    - only work on electronics
    - as it is sound waves things that can be solved via vibration (to an extent) should be allowed.
I'm mostly okay with what David Tennant did with his Sonic though. The ear to the sonic to check signals was a little weird though, maybe put a little screen on it so he can interpret waves. Feels more believable than interpreting a frequency.
The less the screwdriver can do the more unique solutions a writer can come up with.

My take is just use the sonic screwdriver less and only use it for situations where it’s needed.

Honestly, I think they had a great idea with Jodie's, by destroying the Sonic they had the potential to have her homemade one with less functionality, just the necessary stuff. And then ironically it's the most useful and can hack fingers, disable Dalek weaponry, send out massive waves as a siren, transfer DNA bombs and completely survive without any damage when eaten by a Pting 😂

Personally, I'd never want to get rid of the sonic because I feel it has the ability to further characterize each doctor, both in its design, and how they utilize it. I'd like for Gatwa's to serve as a reintroduction/reboot of the screwdriver. One with a far clearer set of functions/rules, in order to prevent it from becoming that "get out of jail free card."
I'd suggest having it able to:
    -Detect and interpret signals
    -Operate computers/electronics
    -Interact with the TARDIS
    -Serve as a flashlight
    -scan/classify matter and species
Also, as you guys said, it's the show's 2nd most iconic piece of marketing/branding, skipping out on it just seems shortsighted

I totally agree with you Miles, that the sonic needs to go, or at least, be returned to being just a simple tool. The Doctor doesn't require the magic wand that it has become. He is perfectly capable to use his senses, knowledge and experience to work out what things are and how to get around obstacles.
Having the sonic has made the Doctor lazy and it has dimished him as a superior intelligence IMO.
Also, I think it encourages lazy and dumb writing.
Nice subject for a discussion, and a great video. Stay safe, fella. :)

I don’t think it needs to go, but I *do* think it needs to have… power problems… so it frequently needs recharging and can’t be used all the time.

Nah, I think getting rid of the Sonic would be like if Batman did away with the Batarang. What they really need is to limit its capabilities and have concrete rules regarding what they can do with it for the series going forward.

I think it became annoying in the matt Smith era and needed a visitation happening then and written put for a while and not a new one straight away.
It seemed to be used for no reason in Smiths era
