I have nothing but respect for Eccleston He is so Honest.
I'm constantly struck by his integrity and honesty in interviews.
Chris: Wow! thank you for that!
Chris to himself: Wow, she didn't ask about Doctor Who. She acknowledges my current work.
He has said in other interviews that he's surprised and really pleased that people are focusing on his other works. And it's nice that she focused on the new first and didn't get in to DW for quite a while (even if DW is most of my reason for watching). I learned about so much new stuff that I wanna check out now because the panel wasn't Who only.
When he accidentally said “fantastic” 😂
Right?!
Time stamp?

Another vid with him, he mentioned RTD chose that word for him because it was something his siblings and him said a lot lol
Great interview in no small part because of the sensitive, ego-less interviewer.
So true she was great.
Marcus Sheppard Great comment, she was excellent
the perfect balance of being quiet and respectful whilst the interviewee is talking but also not seeming robotic or uninterested, love that from her
@@That_Random_Bloke she was fantastic!
I'm glad they discussed his book and not STRAIGHT into Doctor Who.
And he's back.. with Big Finish Audio as the 9th Doctor.
So much respect for Christopher Eccleston, and the interviewer was really excellent. Bravo.
"The great thing about losing [confidence] is if you get it back, you know you're never gonna lose it again." - Christopher Eccleston
Truer and wiser words have never been spoken.
I think there's an interesting angle to Eccleston not growing up with the show before he played the Doctor. He was focusing on how to create and play a certain character from a particular perspective (a lonely traveller, as he essentially describes) rather than potentially falling into the danger of parodying what had come before. Given that the show was being reinvented at the time, that may be been a benefit in disguise.
I love all of the new Doctors, but I think Eccleston is one of the best and most underrated. His Doctor is certainly (in my opinion) one of the most unique iterations of the character ever created, I would have loved to see him alongside Tennant and Smith in the 50th with the level of quality writing to which the show had developed by that point.
It's so nice that he's doing conventions now. He's every bit the thoughtful professional I figured he'd be. Excellent interview. Thank you very much for posting this!
I'm so happy to see Chris Eccleston in a happy place right now ☺
"Once you get your confidence back, you know you can't lose it!"
Highlights (paraphrased):
-its called FOOTBALL you play it with your FOOT its not sack-er
-ah i've forgotten the word what's it called when i became david tennant?
-Doctor Who is frightening for my kids because they know they're dads an idiot
-*completely deadpan* oh yeah i'm coming back for the 100th anniversary
-the speech about the climate is too good to paraphrase!!
-Do some people actually like Thor the Dark World?? Do they exist?? Should we move on to another topic??
-I'm going to be high as a kite for the rest of the day bc of this!
-"Hello Doctor!" "Hello nurse!"
-WHEN HE ACCIDENTALLY SAYS FANTASTIC
This has been one of the best panel interviews I’ve ever seen. I’m from the north of England to, and I’ve always admired Christopher Ecclestone. He’s a great actor. I’m shocked that he was treated in such a way and being black listed. Well not by this fan because even after leaving doctor who I always looked forward to seeing what role he’d be playing next.
10:00 He says Tennent knew it was much a bigger part than just a character, but that's only because his perfomance set the foundation for the whole new series. No one knew if the new series would work at the time when they were filming, people only begin to see its potential when they saw the fantastic first season. He needs to stop (jokingly) saying no one liked his perfomance or audiences wants David's doctor more than his :'(
While I agree that he should stop joking about and putting down his performance, that's not the reason Tennant knew the part was more than the character. As Ecclescake said, he didn't grow up with the show, he wasn't part of the fandom, so to him it was just another character in another job that just happened to have existed in an earlier time. Whilst the success of his season certainly played it's part when Tennant took over, Tennant also had the knowledge of being part of the fandom since a very early age. He knew the expectations that came with that role, which Ecclescake didn't. That's what he's referring to, something that began long before the relaunch was ever a thing. :-)
Neither did Jon. He was comedy actor who did voices. You don't need to be a fan to play the part.
@@matthewburrows6327 no, you don't. But you need to know the cultural significance of doctor who to be even slightly prepared about what's to come during and after your tenure.
@@MrAllallalla It's no different from any other show. Especially since it had been axed for 15 years, with 1 failed attempt to bring it back
@@sygulli5093 bruh, just look at Doctor Who The Movie. Paul is still playing The Doctor to this day (on audio) after just a single film in 1996. It's definitely different from any other part, because it never leaves you
I lost it when he talked about football 😂😂😂 "Sahkker?!"
That was so funny, he's just saying football is with your foot, not ya hand haha , so right.
His Doc would have only got better had he managed a 2nd or 3rd series.
I'm from the North East of England too.
I totally see why Chris is so honest and passionate about all his subjects he talks about and never holds back his feelings!👍🏻
That was so Doctor- y!
Here’s to the 100th anniversary.
Let’s all hope we’re still alive by then
@@murdermcmurderface I'm counting down the days!
I hope mow the people who think the sun shines out of Davis and Collinson's arse and slag off Moffat while now be silent for once. I have met Chris he was lovely.
What a temendous actor and would love to see my first Doctor back.
Hell, I want a special with all the living Doctors in it.

Christopher Eccleston wow this is so real every feeling out there
What an excellent comic con interview. Chris has gone up in my estimation. What a top guy.
I love the amount of thought and earnest-ness he puts into his answers.
What a great man.
It’s really upsetting hearing his reason for not returning for the 50th anniversary, but I feel better thinking he made the right call. Maybe that script wasn’t going to do him justice and bring him back the way he should have. I’m going to trust Chris on that. Love this actor and glad to know he does love the show. He truly is a great doctor.
I love that he seemingly deliberately calls him Tom HiddleSTONE. I know Christopher himself gets that a lot.
I love the mixture of questions, and the meaning to them.
Chris is joking about 100th anniversary, but I'm waiting to see him in 2023 telling his kids "I am not doing it" 😉
This was amazing Constance. Was so nice to see Christopher here. Hopefully this will heal some old wounds, and help reconnect him with the fan base. You seem like such a lovely person too, and a great and positive interviewer.
"If somebody asks me to kiss their asses, I'll bite it."
Great line!
Good to see that Chris embraces Who these days. A lot of stuff Chris holds back on about RTD
Honestly what sense does it make to attack RTD now. 14 years later.
Could you tell me more.
@@spyingcactus the reason Chris led was because he fell out with rtd
@@MrAllallalla maybe because he’s another egomaniac in the british saville corporation
09:35 Of course this had to fail, it's LOTS of planets have a North!
I am glad Chris now talks about Dr Who. I always thought he was embarrassed by his stint as he thought it was 'too camp'. I always thought that wasn't true. He was a great Dr Who.
I think that rumour came around from certain fans who didn't like the idea of a gay man writing Dr Who. Eccleston never expressed anything like that about Davies, or in general.
Andrew M there’s a lot of people who claim he hated it due to Davies writing in gay tinges and having to work with John Barrowman, which clearly isn’t true at all
many times i heard the story of how he left because a director treated the crew extremely badly but was brought back to direct again even after chris complained & didnt want to work with him any more
I was there and i met him the next day in New York Comic Con and he was really cool!
I keep coming back to this, one of my fave interviews of all time, Chris, Constance and the audience are on top form
His doctor is so very endearing, funny and poignant. David is also endearing
Eccleston is one of the my favorite Doctors of the new era, and it always saddens me that we've never seen him on screen again, but I am SO happy that he's finally in a better place mentally, and I would never wish for him to go back to any role that might remind him of the terrible times he's been through.
@Kristien Robert Harland Bell-Wadge Oh, he's an amazing actor with such a wide scope. Being an American, I'd never seen him before Doctor Who, and I was so thrilled to discover him. I've really enjoyed his other works since and hope he has a long and successful career. I'll always miss him as the Doctor, and I'm grateful that the role brought him to my attention (and probably to the attention of quite a few non-British nerds, geeks, and dorks just like myself). For that alone, I'm grateful to the Ninth Doctor. He was wonderful in the role, playing the Doctor as an individual who was clearly not human and (something close to my heart) he gave such a nuanced and sensitive portrayal of PTSD (probably the one thing I have in common with the Ninth Doctor lol). My heart went out to him seeing that, and it's what made me seek out his other work.
Mr Eccelston made me fall in love with Nine and, in turn, Nine made me fall in love with Mr Eccleston. It's probably a uniquely American viewpoint to have on him and that role. I will always love Mr Eccleston in all his roles, but Nine will always hold a special place in my heart. Although I'm very eager to see if I can get my hands on that version of Antigone he mentioned. I love Sophocles.
Chris looks so good for his age, he looks amazing now
Nice to hear more about the 50th from Chris' point of view. Makes his decision to not appear make more sense.
Still sad that he was not on it can come back.. I guess since RTD is back for the 60th Chris defo won't come back.
@@ronariverarahman9941 If only he could put his ego to the side. The world doesn't resolve around him alone and what he wants.
@@timrob12 I am sad and was desperate for him to come back. but he can do what he wants. It's a job and if has the option to turn down stuff he does not want to do all power to him.
@@ronariverarahman9941 Okay, I'm not going to make to big a fuss about this, but I do wish he DOES come back. Not for himself, but for the fans. He and Russell are both grown men. Sit together and talk it out.
Loved him as Doctor Who, but for me, Shallow Grave. Always.
A great human being! So wise. So nice. And so funny!
I'm coming back, in 2063. . . does maths . . . Ouch that hurt. Nice to see he still has his sense of humour (much self denied) and is warming to the show again. As he said he never hated the show, but felt scorned by the time. I hope he does return though
Phoenix 24 he’ll be 99. We can only hope...
Prof. Evil Pictures
That would actually be the funniest and best thing ever if a 99 year old Chris just appeared on doctor who
ruclips.net/video/LliKVpAq-Dc/видео.html I'm really excited!!!
you never know, maybe he could do a little cameo, similar to how Tom baker appeared in the end of The Day of the Doctor as the curator. would be fun to see.
One of my favourite Doctors and my 1st Doctor I saw. All hail Christopher Eccleston!!
Hail!
I honestly love Christopher Eccleson, if you read this Chris, thank you very much
Really enjoyed this video and its great to see Eccleston has a good sense of humour and he is now doing the conventions after what must have been a tough experience for him on his time as being the Doctor.
Due to the separation between Chris and Doctor Who I always thought that he was critical and he didn’t care about the whole doctor who fans and world, but now this makes me happy that he cares and like to play the character and he is funny
I respect him more now
Always knew he cared. But I always thought that he as a human being was more important than a fictional TV show that wouldn't exist without humans.
Pity that you put doctor Who above the health of the human being. He was not entitled to tell you his mental health issues. I bet if he had cancer or it was David Tennant then you'd have sympathy. More people die of the complications of anorexia than any other mental illness, complications such as heart attacks or suicide. If you heard on the news that he had committed suicide a few years ago, would you still think Doctor Who is more important than the health and wellbeing of the actors?
Chris, you were FANTASTIC, I’m hoping you return sooooon
Just happy he's out doing more interviews and being more open about his Doctor Who experience. I'm also glad he's getting the respect and love from fans that he deserves.
Wonderful interview- love Christopher Eccleston
55 years old. Same as me Christopher.
Such a lovely person.
I miss you as the Doctor.
You were one of the best.
And I love how he's considerate of the interviewer, that shows this guy has fucking class.
What a man. Such a fascinating interview, nothing but respect for him.
As a British fan, you can't deny his honesty re; the UK, the press, his own personal private drama, hard upbringing etc. When it comes to Doctor Who, those he worked for and his sudden untimely exit he immediately becomes very uncomfortable, even now. There's still some pain there but he clearly doesn't want to bring up those 'unfortunate circumstances' anymore. He has had his go running down corridors yes but he'll always be the 9th Doctor - the one who truly regenerated for real and made the TARDIS sing again for a new generation.
Gotta love Christopher Eccleston! Love his honesty and grounded nature. I think it's amazing that he's finally opening about his days as the Doctor. Here's to hoping we will see him in that leather jacket again (before 2063)
Thank you for this upload
that was so nice. chris was really engaged. im so glad i got to watch this, very heart felt. the whole thing and to every question.
How do you only have 94 subs? You're a fantastic host and allowed Mr Eccleston to be honest.
Subbed and watched to the end.
Also FYI, he's actually back as 9 now with Big Finish Boxsets. The 1st coming out in May.
Bruh the person who uploaded this didn’t host the panel. They just uploaded it.
great job Constance Gibbs :)
I was thinking the same.
This is one of his best interviews
Always liked him as an actor, but this made me respect him as a person
Of the 13 Eccleston DW episodes, 3 are classics - Dalek, Empty Child, Doctor Dances. There are IMO entire seasons after him with no standout episodes at all. I think we forget that.
Stefan Travis I’ also think Bad wolf/POTW is my favourite finale to a season.
Yeah, there are some seasons I consider generally good (series 8) and some I remember for certain episodes (series 11, don't at me!), but to me series 1 had both. Not a single episode I'd skip on a rewatch. That's quality. That's Eccleston. That's Piper. Davies, Moffat, everybody. Or maybe that's nostalgia, I don't know!
I haven't forgotten that. 2018 was a painful reminder of how far the series has fallen.
Theres always a series with iconic episodes
I don't know if it is considered a classic but I love Father's Day. Terrific episode imho.
I adore Mr. Eccleston! 💜
I believe The Naked Civil Servant was an ITV production and not BBC. But it WAS produced by Verity Lambert the original Dr Who producer
Watching his Doctor is what started me off as a fan. He was The Doctor fresh off the heels of the Time War, with his own personal actions having lead to the destruction of his home world and all it's people. A little darkness is to be expected of a person who abhors violence and has recently brought about multiple genocides in an act of ultimate desperation. I sometimes wonder what his evolution might look like. Well, I guess we'll never know, but I will thank him for his portrayal of the character. I was an extremely ill tempered person, holding my anger back, and bound to explode. There was a day when I was about to walk back into my job and kill someone, but instead I went home and watched Doctor Who. While I'm definitely still a work in progress, with some help and inspiration, I've come a long way.
my grandfather had parkinson's we didn't know for a very long time. it was so hard. one minute he'd know who I was and the next he wouldn't. It's so hard to see someone who you love most in the world go through that.
Obviously Chris is a lovely man but can we take a second to applaud the interviewer for asking about stuff other than Doctor Who right from the outset?

Great hour there with a fine actor and my favourite of the Doctor Who revamp. Interesting too how he talks about the attitude in the UK, never talking about the positives, always focusing on the negative, abusing him for leaving the show, when he had his reasons. I've always been immensely grateful that he did those 13 episodes. There were three, four actually, outstanding ones for me, and I will always love the first series. He also seems to love it over there and I can't blame him. I've always wanted to go to New York, one of those cities I want to visit, but money has always stopped me. Been to Florida, but I have wanted to go to New York for years. Would still love to one day if I get the chance. Hats off, Chris
I could't go to ComicCon this year, so I am so happy that I got to see Chris on RUclips.

Chris Thornton he’ll be 99 years old.
When does he say that , can you send a timestamp?
boney 01 17:20 onwards
I love the fact that Eccleston knows the year of the 100th anniversary. I think I always assumed he didn't know much about the show.
I've had it rough all my life but, what keeps me from depression is the reminder that no matter how bad it is, some unfortunate soul, somewhere, out there, has it much, much worse. I can't complain and I sympathize. Getting better, being better, being happy is good because, you do not want to go back to those hard days, ever again! I look to spark new interests and try to find find "my happy" and there, we come to...

Anyone ever gonna tell him Dr7 used his own Scottish accent. Great stuff though.
I honestly feel bat for chris, hes getting bashed by docotor who fans when he was really a great doctor and I would love to see more of him
Some people think that a fictional TV show is more important than the health and the well-being of the human beings who make it possible unfortunately. Most people accepted that he had good personal reasons for leaving and respected his decision because his happiness and wellbeing is more important than any TV show. Unfortunately there is a vocal minority who either disagree with putting people first or lack any emotional intelligence. I don't think that I have a huge natural gift for emotional intelligence, however even I could sense that he was undergoing some trauma during the filming of doctor who because of the many interviews that he's given since. It wasn't so much of a surprise that he had an eating disorder because he was very thin for a while. There was a thread on the imbd website that's been removed whereby people were saying how skinny he was. I have thought about what these insensitive doctor who fanatics would have thought if he had succumbed to his illness. Would they still be bashing him insisting that Doctor Who is the only thing that matters?
Love it. He's so funny and real. It's sort of sad to realize that bc of RTD coming back and dominating the 60th there is little to no chance of Chris coming back any time soon. I think under another showrunner he might've considered a return to the screen next year.
