- Here's 10 Small Details in Black Mesa... With the game finally out of beta and with Half-Life: Alyx on the horizon I thought why not make a separate video covering some of the minor details in this fantastic remake, after all it deserves any and all appreciation.

Black Mesa (formerly known as Black Mesa: Source) is a first-person shooter video game, developed and published by Crowbar Collective. It is a third-party remake of Half-Life (1998) in the Source game engine. The plot of Black Mesa is almost identical to Half-Life's storyline, playable through the "Lambda Core" chapter. As in the original game, the player controls Gordon Freeman, a scientist working at the Black Mesa Research Facility. He is tasked to place a sample of a strange material into an electromagnetic instrument, using the Hazardous Environment Suit Mark IV to do so safely. However, the sample material causes a "resonance cascade", devastating the facility and creating an interdimensional rift to an alien dimension called Xen, bringing its alien creatures to Earth. Freeman survives, finds other survivors, and makes his way to the surface with the protection of his hazard suit to get help. Upon reaching the surface, however, he finds that the facility is being cleansed of any living thing - human or alien - by armed forces. From other scientists, Freeman finds the only way to stop the alien invasion is to cross over to Xen and destroy the entity holding the portal open.

9:20 I'm convinced that's a Freeman's Mind reference. When Ross Scott did the series, one of the running jokes he created was that Gordon was addicted to Morphine and kept trying to get some.
Nah I think it has more to do with the HEV suit. Upon receiving a certain amount of damage it will say "Automatic medical systems engaged. Morphine adminestered."
@@jeanscuissiato135 That interaction in front of the microwave almost always happens before you get the HEV suit, but also Ross acknowledged that in his series and Freeman got a morphine shot from getting hurt once. Plus, the only reason the guard would have commented "yeah, that's fair" would be if Freeman WANTED to get shot up with morphine, which is what a druggie does.
@@OGXenos That's a little bit on the nose, don't ya think? I believe there are quotes that reference Gordon has "stopped taking his meds" which is definitely a reference to Freeman's mind - but the morphine shot is a reference to the HEV suit.
The guard also says "I didn't think you'd crack soon.", what would cause Gordon to crack exactly? There's nothing else that would cause that - except the Resonance Cascade itself, which hasn't happened yet.
@@ScientistHL I just covered that in my last reply. The HEV suit injects morphine, but that's only something you want if you're a druggie trying to get a hit. The guard is accusing Gordon of trying to pick a fight so that he can get a morphine shot from his suit when he gets punched, which is exactly something Ross Scott's Freeman would try to do.
@@OGXenos The line of the guard about morphine happens with every guard you piss off before the resonance cascade, since after that all others will shoot you and have other lines. But yeah maybe it can have to do with morphine addicted too.
I heard about Black Mesa for at least more of a decade.
Never thought I would have ever seen it go out of beta.
Why did it take more than a decade for this to leave beta? I'm guessing the dev team is small for this?

For some reason I don't know, since I never actually cared, Valve gave his permission to work on their most famous IP and let them publish it on Steam, but still remained a fan made project, as far as I know Valve never gave them the original assets nor gave them additional support, help or resources, they started doing it from scratch and they ended the same way.
It being out of beta is mostly a PR thing what with HL:A coming out. Conveniently they finished xen like 4 months ago. Still a lot of bugs and shit that should be updated.
Without mentioning of course that now Valve conveniently has a quality remake of Half Life without spending a dime on it, of course.
I mean, I played it and I found it really good for being a fanmade remake of a 22 years old game using a 15 years old engine, playing with the nostalgia factor.

In the scene about how sound travels, when the bombers destroy the facility, you can see the shock wave propagate until it reaches you .. now that's cool
Yeah, but why do the bombers fly soo low to the ground, i guess is so that it looks extra epic but it doesnt make a lot of sence, and are those f-4s

I love the new Kleiner-esque scientist voice. Because Kleiner is actually in the game now, they can't use his voice for the generic scientists so they use a slightly different one but one that still has all the HL Scientist energy

One of the more interesting parts of dialogue you can find is if you save the guard at where you find the hive hand before getting said weapon, when you grab it if you manage to have the guard see you put your hand inside the weapon he make some unique dialogue like if he finds a camera he wants you to do that again.

That detail with the explosion was so refreshing. It's not often game dev's will make sound travel slower than light, instead just making sound quieter the further away you are
That logo in the pipe took me a long time to get right XD
That random npc conversation system is so 90s. Most Quake II engine games had it, I remember Kingpin had it. It was funny bacause you could bring any random npcs close together and they started conversing by saying silly generic things intead of the focused dialogue modern games have. It's so good this remake respected that detail
what's extraordinary is a lot of these details were present in half life 1 in some form

I miss some deatels that HL1 had tuoh:
-vortigunts flee if they seriously injured.
-houndeye sleaping pack that is not presetted.
-aliens eating from corpses, including yours.
-seeing Xen fauna at the resonant cascade formin (none aggresive bullsquids), not only alienslaves/vortigunts groop chanting.
