This game is basically RDR2 of its time, releasing 18 years ago it has an exceptional level of detail that's not typically found in most games, my guess is we have Hideo Kojima to thank for that, anyway hope you enjoy the video and return shortly for my coverage of MGS3 :)

@@AnonEMus-cp2mn One thing about the MGS series is that it holds up really well to today's standards of a "fun" game. Also each title is such an epic thing that stands out from the rest in the series. So many franchises today that have multiple entries feel like they're just another entry of the series but each MGS is an epic masterpiece. If I may make a recommendation, if for some reason you only play one game from the MGS franchise, please play the 1st "Solid" game that came out on the PlayStation 1.

@@jkajmo Yeah as an old gamer i feel the same...and thats probably because in the end they dont have much to say as a whole work of art, there isnt much to get out of them....they lean a lot more towards the money making approach, its a different game desing philosophy....MGS as a whole, in every game, has SO much to talk about and and has such a deep story and message that it will survive for ages. Its like Shakespeare´s books, they are simply universal and timeless due to their depth

@@WisperMetal whoa, referencing MGS to Shakespeare is a beautiful thing. You're absolutely correct good sir & I couldn't agree more. The way stories are expressed in the MGS universe are very poetic. This video upload has inspired me to replay through the series. I too am an older gamer (37 next week) and been passionately playing & collecting games since I was 6 years. To be honest with you I am very happy to have been born in the early 80s because I was exposed to like 80% of the entire video game culture & got to experience the amazing retro scene but when it was all new still, before it went retro & that all was just absolutely AWESOME!

For those of you who think this looks like a "game I'd play on my mobile"... you'll never know how mind blowing this transition from "blocky" (as we used to call it) PS1 graphics to this was. There are just no words to explain it, you have to have been living in that time to appreciate how alien and unsettling this new realism in games was.

There are SO MANY THINGS to discover in this game.
    - Holding down certain buttons during a codec call will share the player's thoughts on the conversation (usually little interjections). One button is a positive thought, and one button is negative. They are pressure sensitive buttons, so pressing hard on the negative button means they will have a really negative reaction to what someone said.
    - If you do a roll or cartwheel into enemies it will knock them over. Enemies can be knocked over railings and fall down several floors onto other enemies.
    - In first person mode you can hold L2 or R2 to lean left or right, this lets you peek around corners or take quick shots from cover in a fight. You can hold both buttons to stand up on your toes for a bit more height. They are pressure sensitive so press harder to lean more or stand higher.
    - Tranquilizing enemies in different parts of the body makes them fall asleep for different amounts of time. It also takes them longer to fall asleep depending on where you shoot them.
    - Knocking out an enemy by punching doesn't last as long as tranquilizing, and has a different effect to indicate their status (stars over their head instead of ZZZ's).
    - In some areas, enemies are wearing nightvision. If you point your pistol at them in first person it has a torch and it blinds them.
    - During the game you get a coolant spray, you can spray enemies in the face to stop them from being able to hit you.
    - You can use the coolant spray to wake up someone faster if they have been tranquilized.
    - If you spray coolant non-stop for too long it will puff out. The player character will shake the can to get it working again.
    - Shooting at the bird in the cage will make it call for help and start an alert if there are enemies nearby.
    - If an alerted enemy runs into a room and sees a poster of a woman (the ones behind a door or in a locker), they will get distracted and stop searching for you.
    - You can increase your grip gauge by doing pull ups while hanging. To do a pull up you hold both shoulder buttons down until fully raised, 100 pull ups gets you to level 2, then another 100 pull ups gets you to level 3. The grip gauge drains slightly faster as you pull yourself up.
    - You can increase the grip gauge level even faster by intentionally dropping from a railing, then catching the next one down as you fall.
    - Shooting an enemy's radio will stop them from being able to use it. When they try, it won't work and they give it a frustrated shake. They must leave the area to call for help.
    - On the tanker, the Commandant's speech changes depending on the difficulty level. He forgets and pauses more on lower difficulty, and the timer stops while he isn't talking. On higher levels he will fake out the troops and say INTRUDER IN THE BACK! and they all turn around regardless of where you are.
    - During the speech you can tranquilize the soldiers standing to attention and they fall asleep while standing instead of falling over. No one notices they are sleeping.
    - You can enter your birthday when you find the first Node in Big Shell. If the birthdate matches the system clock, it will sing 'Happy Birthday!'
    - If you enter the name of certain staff members at a Node, it will automatically fill out other details about them like age, gender and blood type.
    - When you meet Pliskin for the first time, he will threaten you if you point a gun at him. If you tranquilize him you can do a codec call where he talks in his sleep.
    - Some lockers can't be opened, but if you punch them with the correct combo the doors will fall onto the floor. If you get it wrong the door falls into the locker and you can't get the item.

Thanks for writing all of this. I knew everything except one or two. Especially the commander thing was just amazing. games nowadays just decrease your health in Easy Medium or Hard, in MGS it actually changed the commanders behavior which made it harder to not get caught.
Another easteregg you missed: The various codec calls. The most famous would be the snapshot in the area where you need to find Ames (disguised as an enemy).
There is a lady with a skirt, if you punch her a few times she will spread her legs and you can make a photo of her panties. Calling the Colonel will cause him to say ''Just, save a backup for me'' and rosemary will absolutely hate raiden for it.

"Locational damage" leads to a funny glitch that I liked to use a lot to scare clearing teams. Shoot a guy in the leg with a tranq gun, then shoot him in both legs with a regular gun. He'll fall over, and begin the bleed-out dying animation, but then fall asleep in the middle of it. ZZZs appear, and he's marked as sleeping on your radar.
Have someone else find the body(like a clearing team), and they'll kick him to wake him up, only he'll immediately die.

MGS2, even on original hardware, still looks amazing because of the incredible texture work. It also looks really clean and jaggie-free because they relied on textures instead of using too many polygons. Perfect use of the PS2.

While it is true that it is far from being one of the highest polygon pushing games on the system, in part as a result of being a game started well before the hardware was finalized, for a first gen game they did push plenty of polygons. As a matter of fact they leveraged the PS2’s raw polygon pushing power to make up for the unknowns of the system, and the performance impact that not yet understanding the hardware could have, by making using extra polygons and textures to achieve the equivalent of shader fx.

      What's the V fix?

@@rvh1999 V's fix is a fan made fix for the abomimation known as Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance PC Edition. It fixes a bunch of stuff and makes it very playable on PC.Except for the controls on keyboard. Those still suck.

Never played that, but man! This is really insane. This game has more level of detail than many other games today have...

Before making this video I had never played it either, but when I did I was so surprised by the amount of thought that went into it's production, truly masterful work.

Too bad that the Plant chapter of the game wasn't anywhere near as detailed as the Tanker in terms of the environment.

I thought I knew every secret to this game but I didn’t know about knocking on the poster or the ice melting!!
I always loved the “hidden” things like spotting ocelot before he’s revealed in the tanker and Olga on the radio before her first fight, knocking on the pantry with stillman and wall for the president. So many amazing things in this game
