My wife and I along with our two dogs are also headed to Alaska in late May through June. It is our last state to visit and also our 30th year anniversary. We're taking our self converted Sprinter. Hope your advanture to Alaska will be awesome. Stay safe. We enjoy watching all of your advantures you have.

honestly, I think there will ALWAYS be at least one thing we will have to shuffle. At least with two people.... the key is trying to decrease the number of things one is moving around. This is INCREDIBLY difficult in any rig by especially a smaller one of your size. But you can go more places that we can...HAPPY TRAVELS

@5:47 THE WOBBLE: I had the wobble in my 2018 Ford Transit. It turned out that I needed to replace my 2 rear tires because the steel belts were separating on the inside of the tire. The tech showed me a "swelling" of each of the rear tires while raised up on the jacks. This made the entire van shimmy in the 45+mph range. Fortunately my tires were under warranty still as they were not very old. Just a thought.

    • @oneadVANtureatatime
      @oneadVANtureatatime  5 месяцев назад

We thought it was the tires at first. we bought two new tires...still had the wobble. Bought two more tires....all new tires now and still the wobble. Plus the wobble stops when we let off the gas indicating it is not the tires.

Your upgrades are wonderful! We bought the trelino urine deverter with the urine jug and used a short 3 gallon bucket with bags( for the number 2) and made a enclosed platform for it. We loved it! We used the coconut bricks and the mixture of alcohol, peroxide, and peppermint oil in a spray bottle to spray in the urine side after each use. NO smell at all. Oh my goodness! I have a 2019 and had one coil go bad in Yuma. Made it to Kanab about 6 weeks later and another one went bad!!! First one at the dealer cost $500. This time a mechanic came out and went ahead and replaced the back 3. $500 once again. I’m only at 55k miles! I also replaced my coolant reservoir due to cracks while in YumaZ. Interesting hearing you guys with the same issues than me but MUCH more mileage than myself. I didn’t even know what a coil was! We upgraded to the same toilet (tall version) and love it. For our refrigerator we bought a indoor outdoor temperature monitor system. We use the wireless outdoor sensor in the refrigerator. Just a nice easy way to know the temperature in the refrigerator. Saved us once when we had an electrical connection issue for the frig. Batteries last about a year. Might be nice for your new freezer especially with it being in the back.

I think an onboard toilet is a must...it has allowed us much flexibility and comfort. Here is my comparison between natures head and trelino.
Price...no comparison Natures Head $1000 Vs trelino $400-500
Size... natures head is quite large and cumbersome...trelino is boxy and streamlined.
cleaning... Natures head- very complicated, Trelino - simple design easy to clean.
Urine bucket...Natures head-impressive design, Trelino-poor design in my opinion, the pee guard came off the first day, seems impossible to empty without getting urine on your hands and the design makes it difficult to completely empty. They put and extra lid under the bucket which I thought was smart at first, but I soon learned that that area quickly filled up with spilled urine or condensation....so a small round puddle under the urine bucket.
Fan... natures head fan design....impressive! Trelino...highly miss the fan!
smell... when the natures head was working properly there was no smell... We have had problems with smell in the trelino from day one... both #1 and #2. Either people are lying about no smell, or we are just really smelly ...lol
not sure how to say this tackfully.... the trelino is not designed for men to sit down for #1...bits and bobs hang down into the shallow urine sink.
Trelino is much easier to empty both #1 and #2 bins
The natures head felt like having a real toilet in our van. The trelino seems like a glorified bucket....sorry trelino! Having said all that.... what the trelino lacks in function it makes up for in stealth and space saving. Our next on-board toilet I think we will build ourselves.
Hope this helps.....still searching for the perfect portable toilet..

@@oneadVANtureatatimethank you, this helps to know. We are actually thinking of building one ourselves as well. We bought a urine diverted, just looking over plans/designs. I thought if the Trelino was a decent product, we’d just go that route, but I think we’ll probably just build our own. Thanks again!!

Wow! Some wonderful work you did. I think you really "maxed out" your space and some job, too. More importantly, you discussed your issues of space and revealed things most folks won't do...and you did it without the slightest hint of ego...(What are the lyrics to Beethoven's Fifth symphony?)...if you know the theme of the music (Da-da-da-DAHHHH)...the lyrics of the egoist are "Me-me-me-MEEEEE") which sooooo many people are when they fill the screen with their face and block out the view behind them. E.g. Do we really want to see a close-up of them chewing their food?
You guys are soooo humble, modest, warm and inviting...so refreshing to see...I'm surprised you don't have 500 Patreon supporters or more... (but one day you will!). Oh, and by the way, I think 99% of your subscribers WILL enjoy this video...I know I did! So, worry not!
There are lots of little things you did with this upgrade: chamfer the edges of the butcher block...NICE! Gain more drawer space...NICE! Re-do the rear...NICE! Reveal some details about the toilet many would shy away from-so humbly but open. I understand that more stuff inside translates to more weight and the van does have its limits, of which I am definitively sure you more than know very well. That butcher-block top does weigh! And also, your battery and solar improvements. I never thought that overhead lights would leak, but now I know they can...thanks to you!
I show your videos to all of my friends...and they are ALL impressed. There are not enough words of congratulations I could offer...except thank you.
Now about Alaska: I've been there once...for a month, and loved it. We took my 83-year old mother who had just recovered from major neck surgery (she broke her neck at age 82 and came out smiling)...If you go to McCarthy, you had better have TWO spare tires, the road is rough (we flew by chartered plane)...but the Kennecott Copper Mine was amazing. In the bush, you had better be able to deal with MOSQUITOES... because those little fellas are "proliferative" to put it mildly. A wide-brimmed hat with mosquito netting draped over your head/face/neck is essential. If you wear shorts, your legs will get bit. Mosquitoes have driven herds of elk mad and they've been know to stampede to try to get away from mosquitoes. Once you walk on a glacier, the mosquitoes almost instantly disappear (a pair of elastic strap-on shoe ice spikes could help for glacier-walking). Swimming on a lake will not give you shelter from them. You could get one of those tennis-racquet style electrocuters, but all it takes is 1, 2 or 3 little ones inside when you sleep and you'll wake up with multiple bites. Sorry to accentuate the mosquito issue...but I'm sure you have heard. You almost certainly will drive down some roads where you might pass three or four oncoming vehicles in one entire day! So you will encounter lonely roads that knowing you two, you might actually really enjoy! You don't have a winch, and installing a winch means a great deal of work to do it right...but it might prove worthwhile, however, I think you'll probably very carefully review where you're going to go driving so that a winch is probably not needed. I'm sure you know that AWD and 4WD have its advantages but you have managed quite well with front drive.
Fishing in Alaska cannot be beat from what I've heard...boy oh boy, super fresh just-caught fish pan-fried in butter over a wood fire--- it doesn't get better than that! Alaska is filled with salmon fisher-persons trying to get that 10-12 pounder. [www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/home/library/pdfs/ak_wild_salmon.pdf]. Viewing snow-capped peaks that appear so close, yet they are miles and miles away...and enormous parks like Wrangell-St.Elias and Denali will provide ample photography possibilities...(only about 25% to maybe 30% of folks will get to see Denali itself, it's often ensconced in clouds). But I know you two: you'll wait around for the opportunity and you shall have it! If you can afford it, a one or two-hour flight from Chitina over Wrangell-St. Elias will offer you amazing viewing and photography opportunities. And midnight photos in late June...you'll get to see the sun directly overhead at 6 PM!!!! as if it were noon time elsewhere...incredible.
There is also an Alaskan Highway Guide book that literally discusses just about every mile of the roads...where there are sharper turns, pull-outs/pull-overs, rougher road, or where trucks need a little more room to turn...so if you plan on driving the Alaska Highway system, it's a great book to have. (That's if it's still in print). Many of the roads are not paved, so be prepared..stone guards might be a thing to consider.
I wish you two the absolute best for your Alaskan adventure...and there's also the Yukon, and between the two, over 800,000 square miles of possibilities...Alaska alone stretches through FIVE time zones...has 34,000 miles of shore line and over 3 million lakes, most of which are unnamed! This WILL be more than one AdVanture...it could be dozens of AdVantures! So who better than you should do it, enjoy it...Have fun and we, your subscribers cannot wait!

Thank you for your kind words and alaska tips.
We were aware of the weight issue on the butcher block but decided to throw caution to the wind, we are dragging our feet about getting the van weighed again. It will be interesting to see the result as we have removed quite a few items over the years....I am expecting to be a few hundred pounds heavier.
We have the alaska milepost magazine to guide us to alaska. We are considering going to the artic circle via Yukon and not the traditional route that everyone takes. There is so much to do and see, its hard to pick a route. We are really hoping that we can house sit for the winter in alaska....that would give us 2 full seasons to explore. That would entail finding a house to sit. This pipe dream may or may not work out...who knows. I WOULD LOVE TO PHOTOGRAPH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS all winter.
I am a tad worried about the mosquitos! I will have all the usual mosquito fighting tools. Right not I am researching and figuring out how to keep Roodle comfortable from these pesks.
Over al we ARE SUPER EXCITED!! It will be an adVANture for sure!

@@oneadVANtureatatime The best TOPICAL treatment to repel mosquitoes is DEET...about 30% concentration applied 3-4 times/day. Some formulations are less greasy than others. Cover yourselves, head to toe...and some fabric weaves do perform better than others. There is actually a line of clothes They also make fabric with insect repellent actually in the fabric itself, but after 4 or 5 washings, it's largely gone. Mosquito antennae are receptive to CO2 (carbon dioxide) and water vapor (what you breathe out). DEET "anesthetizes" their antennae so they cannot sense your presence...it "blinds" them, so to speak. So, they fly about you, but they cannot "see" you and therefore cannot land on you. There may be some dog-friendly formulations, and most dogs do get bit around their mouth and head...because they don't perspire like we do, except when they pant. Perhaps a treated neck collar? Or a treated bandanna? You don't want Roodle licking anything that could cause trouble. I'm sure you're well aware of all this! Some other choices: picaridin...but the US Army uses DEET after having tested over 65,000 (I think it was that number) different substances. You should see how the Army conducted their studies...YIKES!
The best aurora viewing times start mid-october through early December...and again in the early spring...green is the most frequent color and red is the rarest color. Perhaps in Anchorage or Fairbanks you can "house-sit". Check out Girdwood and Alyeska (ski resort)...maybe someone may need a house-sitter when they're not there at the ski resort. And of course, as I'm very sure you already know, during winter time, the reduced sunlight hours does have a negative effect on some folks' emotional state.
It can get really cold in some parts...and - 40F isn't uncommon but the last few winters haven't been all that terrible. But when it gets in the -50s...or colder, that's fan-belt snapping cold...so perhaps consider keeping an extra fan belt or two plus a wrench to replace a broken fan belt. Driving on battery power only gets you maybe 10 miles. Plus will that Webasto heater do the trick for you?
You two are very good planners...so I'm sure you've already done mounds of research. I do hope you enjoy your summer! Be well!

That Butcher Block Counter is the bomb! And how you figured out the puzzle / reconfigured everything is so cool and I'm sure will make everyday life a lot better.
A little friendly interior design suggestion or two ....I hope you don't mind...😊
    - Paint the kick-plate with the webasto heater...black.
    - New peel n stick backsplash ... not a necessity but could be a simple, fun, refresh for your home after 6 years.
    How bout those frogs!

Love the webasto kick plate suggestion. Dave is very happy about his wild edible drawer; he doesn't have a lot of hobbies, so I figured he needed something a little special and to fuel his excitement even more. Robert is a great brother! Dave and Robert are only a year apart in age but they might as well be twins.
