Hello, I want you to know that I mean no ill will to the participants or hosts of this project. I know that making a Multi Animator Project isn’t a small feat, but I think that for a MAP that has elected to use a Chinese “aesthetic” for it’s art direction, then there should have been more care into respectfully portraying my culture. I fail to really see a reason *why* the MAP labels itself as Chinese if not for purely aesthetic reasons, and I question the amount of research that went into this project. Looking at the character designs, it seems that many of the characters are based on the Chinese Zodiac (Moonwatcher is a goat, Kinkajou a horse, Peril a tiger, etc), while others are unrelated animals. Like a star sign, zodiac signs have specific characteristics associated with them reflecting the animal itself or a person born under a respective year. All of the animals shown, even outside of the Zodiac, have some significance to Chinese culture, but it comes across more like characters were chosen without much thought to be based on animals without considering their meaning. Speaking of, Scarlet wears a necklace bearing the Yin and yang symbol, tied to Taoist beliefs, when Scarlet herself could not be more ill-fitting of a character to be wearing it. This stuck out to me in particular as the Yin and yang symbol is constantly used in Western media to signify that something is Chinese purely because it is recognizable. If you are going to be portraying or taking inspiration from a culture that is not your own, then you must do thorough research and/or consult someone of that culture. It is disrespectful to make surface level connections like this simply because the aesthetic is pleasing, because there is great depth to Chinese culture and mythology that ends up being watered down or ignored. Accurately portraying other cultures is important as it lets others learn from the art they view. I ask that in the future, hosts and their teams put in the right amount of research and care when taking inspiration from other cultures and mythologies. Thank you.
Heyy, first of all ty for taking ur time for for this and watching the map its super nice :] secondly, we (the host and i) would like to admit that we were very young and unceducated at the time of concepting, even though we are chinese. Our knowledge was there, but not at the right level, and so we were kinda just trying to go with the flow. That being said, we DEFINITELY shouldve done more thorough research as you mentuioned like the zodiac meanings n stuff, because it is true that there are some characters who dont match their animal, and are just for their designs, and thats on us for not fully considering our culture. As for scarlet, we dont know what we were doing and idk why we didnt catch that beforehand it was so obvious AGGXHSHX 😭 concerning the name of the map, we just called it “chinese darkstalker” since the beginning of the creation of this project, and we eventually just stuck with that but didnt have the spirit to change it for a more “official” namein the end bc we didnt think much about it. However, the majority of the concepts have gone through research, but you are so right we def couldve and shouldve put more effort into the concepts and the meanings of them. It does change some things hearing that the both of you are Chinese, as I was concerned the project was run by people who were not. I am mixed Chinese and have been doing my part to research more about Chinese mythology as it interests me, and it was frustrating seeing that the project was seemingly not researched well enough. In any case, it was a mistake, and I understand that a lot of the people in this community are young. I appreciate that the two of you went through a lot of work and research to make this even if I think there were oversights on your part. All I really want is for people to improve in the future so that we can share our culture and make it a learning experience for everybody :)

Hello, I want you to know that I mean no ill will to the participants or hosts of this project. I know that making a Multi Animator Project isn’t a small feat, but I think that for a MAP that has elected to use a Chinese “aesthetic” for it’s art direction, then there should have been more care into respectfully portraying my culture. I fail to really see a reason *why* the MAP labels itself as Chinese if not for purely aesthetic reasons, and I question the amount of research that went into this project. Looking at the character designs, it seems that many of the characters are based on the Chinese Zodiac (Moonwatcher is a goat, Kinkajou a horse, Peril a tiger, etc), while others are unrelated animals. Like a star sign, zodiac signs have specific characteristics associated with them reflecting the animal itself or a person born under a respective year. All of the animals shown, even outside of the Zodiac, have some significance to Chinese culture, but it comes across more like characters were chosen without much thought to be based on animals without considering their meaning. Speaking of, Scarlet wears a necklace bearing the Yin and yang symbol, tied to Taoist beliefs, when Scarlet herself could not be more ill-fitting of a character to be wearing it. This stuck out to me in particular as the Yin and yang symbol is constantly used in Western media to signify that something is Chinese purely because it is recognizable. If you are going to be portraying or taking inspiration from a culture that is not your own, then you must do thorough research and/or consult someone of that culture. It is disrespectful to make surface level connections like this simply because the aesthetic is pleasing, because there is great depth to Chinese culture and mythology that ends up being watered down or ignored. Accurately portraying other cultures is important as it lets others learn from the art they view. I ask that in the future, hosts and their teams put in the right amount of research and care when taking inspiration from other cultures and mythologies. Thank you.

Heyy, first of all ty for taking ur time for for this and watching the map its super nice :] secondly, we (the host and i) would like to admit that we were very young and unceducated at the time of concepting, even though we are chinese. Our knowledge was there, but not at the right level, and so we were kinda just trying to go with the flow. That being said, we DEFINITELY shouldve done more thorough research as you mentuioned like the zodiac meanings n stuff, because it is true that there are some characters who dont match their animal, and are just for their designs, and thats on us for not fully considering our culture. As for scarlet, we dont know what we were doing and idk why we didnt catch that beforehand it was so obvious AGGXHSHX 😭 concerning the name of the map, we just called it “chinese darkstalker” since the beginning of the creation of this project, and we eventually just stuck with that but didnt have the spirit to change it for a more “official” namein the end bc we didnt think much about it. However, the majority of the concepts have gone through research, but you are so right we def couldve and shouldve put more effort into the concepts and the meanings of them. It does change some things hearing that the both of you are Chinese, as I was concerned the project was run by people who were not. I am mixed Chinese and have been doing my part to research more about Chinese mythology as it interests me, and it was frustrating seeing that the project was seemingly not researched well enough. In any case, it was a mistake, and I understand that a lot of the people in this community are young. I appreciate that the two of you went through a lot of work and research to make this even if I think there were oversights on your part. All I really want is for people to improve in the future so that we can share our culture and make it a learning experience for everybody :)
