That's exactly what we did. The kit was built in CAD on the scan and then CNC machined out. It was a perfect fit.

Hi, This was done by taking a reference scan off the calibration panel. Then when you have the right set up you can move away from the panel and scan what you like. It's not a cheap set up that does this scan and it takes a lot of research to achieve it.

Hi Andy, Tempera... water based kids paint, hot water and a dash of Fairy Liquid. Applied with a car paint gun, just like you were giving it a full respray without all the masking. I use a jet washer to take it all off and it comes off no problem. Someone suggested using alcohol instead of water to 'dry' it off faster but I've not tried it.

If you go to the DAVID laser forum and look up FULL SIZE CAR scanning by CNC Dave you'll find pictures of the gearbox and stepper motor I used. The stepper was controlled independantly from DAVID using an arduino board. Everyone seems to have their own approach. I used a very expensive gearbox and eventually it failed to give a constant movement of the laser... I've had many gearboxes fail and to that end I would use a projector for planeless scanning next time.

Hi, there's no cheap way to get really good results. If your just starting out your best starting point is the projector kit from DAVID. It won't scan a whole car like my video, but it will bring you up to speed on the whole process. Starting on the cheap can get you frustrated and when you want good results your going to need good equipment.

Thats really brilliant, Can you by any chance provide some building instructions for the hardware? Thanks

I have built many machines but I rarely put anything on paper.. I design in my head and go straight to the milling machine or lathe to make the parts...
What is it you want to scan? Because it depends on the size of object how your rig is built.

Hi Thanks for the reply. I already have the starter kit with me. I am doing scanning using planes but want to get into planeless scanning. And for that I wanted to know what hardware you used, and I would be very grateful if you could provide the building instructions. Thanks

I thought you had to have a pattern in the background to use DAVID. How did you overcome that obstacle? I would also like to scan larger objects.

Hi Dave, what did you use to matte the car surfaces before you started scanning?
