- California travel expert Veronica Hill tours the Brig Pilgrim tall ship at Ocean Institute Dana Point in this episode of "California Travel Tips."
Maritime coordinator George Mack offers an overview of the tallship, which is anchored in Dana Point Harbor. The ship is a replica of that made famous in "Before the Mast" by Richard Henry Dana. On weekends, the tall ship crew dresses in character, offering a living history look at life on the ship.
The Ocean Institute is also home to the annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival each September, which is the largest West Coast gathering of tall ships. The tall ship festival features a tall ship cruise on the Brig Pilgrim and Spirit of Dana Point.
Tall ship sailing is offered every weekend aboard the Spirit of Dana Point. The Spirit also offers extended tall ship cruises to Catalina for snorkeling excursions.

My rack on the USS Forrestal was about the same size. There were three racks from floor, deck, to ceiling. We were packed in as tightly or more so. Lots has been learned about disease and hygiene, so no hot racks!

So, this is the Pilgrim! I am reading Dana's Two Years Before the Mast and seeing the actual ship ( well a reproduction) is a treat. I must get down to Dana Point and walk aboard!
me and my bros had a field trip here when we were in forth grade and we coiled rope raised a sail and lifted a 160 pound barrel. we toured the ship too it was fun this reminded me of it
You're probably right! The ship has been here for a while. I think they have a really great program here for students. Hoping my kids can do it one day!
Came here to remember this ship. She sank at her moorings on 3/29/2020 and could not be salvaged. Brig Pilgrim, 1945-2020
Such sad news to me. I helped rerig her in 1977 at the Proctor and Gamble wharf Long Bch CA. I lived aboard her for 3 years.

Amen to that. Sadly Pilgrim sank yesterday. A reporter on the story also referred to her as a schooner. ????

Next year - 2011 Tallship Challenge returns to the West Coast. Look for all the great ships that venture out as ambassadors to this wonderful world of history.
You can sail on her if you volunteer and put in enough hours. We muster every Saturday at nine. Come join us. We're getting ready to take her out for this year's sail, leaving on the 25th of August and returning on September 6. This is my fourth sailing season. It's an incomparable experience. Don't worry if you don't know how to sail. We'll teach you everything you need to know.
