Mark Kermode is one of my favourite film critics ever, and you have brilliantly shown in this video why he is so good! I am something of an aspiring film critic myself and this was very informative.
Greetings from San Francisco! What a treat to have one of my favorite critics analyzed by one of my favorite media educators. Made my day. Thanks for all your great work, I'll be using them again in my Fall courses at San Francisco State University. Cheers!
The point about being authentic is great to mention. I struggle with it sometimes. I usually try to get a "review" or at least my general thoughts down on Letterboxd when I watch a film, mostly for me to go back and read later to refresh my memory. Today I watched Chungking Express and had a similar reaction that you had to Roma; I didn't hate it but I just did not vibe with it at all. Seeing 90% of the reviews landing at 4 stars and above makes it difficult to just put your real reaction down out of fear of judgement especially online. Really liked your video. Kermode is great.
His reviews are genuinely entertaining. I listen to his podcast that he does with Simon Mayo and sometimes I disagree with him he’s always fun, especially when he’s on a rant, like his Avatar: The Way of Water review, or video on Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. My favourite is his pledge for the film Bride Wars, just the blunt way he says: ‘If there are ten films worse than Bride Wars this year, I quit.’
@The Media Insider Hi, I am currently analysing 'The queen' 2006 film in school and my teacher said she is not going to analyse the film shots and stuff so could you do that please this movie is so hard to analyse for me and there isn't many resources on it. It would be great if you do the subtle things which aren't noticeable and symbols and motifs which appear. That would be so helpful if you could.
if your character goes to see the movie star trek, and you want the reader to know what the are hearing that means something to them, can you put some of the star trek script in your script or will people freak out about it
Mark Kermode is the first person i will go to for reviews, except when the film is a comedy. He said he has a bit of tin ear for comedy. He said that about himself and I agree. NOT TO BE TRUSTED WHEN REVIWING COMEDY LOL.
@@TheMediaInsider He raved about the animated film the red turtle. I found it a bit dull and pretentious. I often find that he is rather pretentious himself tbh.
Interesting channel, and interesting video, so I don't want to start off on a bad note............. but I don't like the way Mark Kermode reviews films. I feel bogged down by too much detail and not enough analysis, when I listen to one of his reviews. Is there another way to write about films?
I'd say so... it's not easy but by the sound of it you already have the secret ingredient of knowing what you like/don't like in a review. Tear up the rulebook and review it your way - write reviews for YOU. It sounds like you enjoy the analytical aspect so try that - I guarantee you'll find a whole community online who share your way of thinking. Thanks for watching!
Totally disagree. I think Kermode is a terrible film critic. He's all smoke and mirrors - name dropping obscure films that rarely have any real relevance to the film he's reviewing. He cant seem to get his head around letting us know whether or not a movie is entertaining, instead focussing on a technical aspect of a film. He makes stupid statements like "Jaws is not about a shark, The Deer Hunter is a terrible movie and Hereditary is not scary, Brando wasn't a great actor and the Richard Gere remake of Breathless is better than the original (to name just a few) - when millions would disagree. Two examples of critics who know what they are doing - Robbie Collin is a very good movie critic, but Anna Bogutskaya is a fucking movie savant! She's the best in the business.
I feel so blessed for having found your channel. It is exactly what I needed on my journey of creating movie reviews ❤ Thank you very much indeed!
Thank you for the kind words: I really wish I could produce stuff more often. Could I ask what other content you would like to see?

OMG! The media insider is back!
I’m a massive fan of Kermode. I write movie reviews as a hobby and this is a great informative video.
Nice - do you post them on RUclips?

This is great advice, thank you. Saving this video for future reviewing. 👍

Thank you for creating this, i want to learn this and this is really helpful
Great video :)
You've got a typo in your title though - it should say "How to review films" not "How review films."
Thank you! Four months later and I’ve fixed it
Very helpful. Thank you.
Hello Media insider,
You may not remember me but you used to teach me.

YES! Agreed - it's also clearly difficult for him to review animations like The Smurfs I find
@@TheMediaInsider He raved about the animated film the red turtle. I found it a bit dull and pretentious. I often find that he is rather pretentious himself tbh.
@@TheMediaInsider He loves a dull arthouse self indulgent kind of film quite a lot of the time too. But hay ho he is still the best in the biz.
Great 👍 video. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it thank you very much

Why are you alternating the pronunciation of his name? It is distracting.
