    Man, ITER REALLY needs better marketing, it's one of humanity's most amazing and ambitious projects, and yet barely anyone outside the scientific community and those interested in nuclear has heard of it!

Without racism, we maybe would have reached mars already. Because we allow everyone, including minorities to reach their full potential, more progress is possible. As long as they are underrepresented, it is more likely that talent is wasted. A group that makes up 10% of the population should make up about the same number in every field since humans are just one species. Any deviation is more unlikely and probably means society is losing talent and money.

Which conveniently has been "debunked" by mainstream science but in reality it exist pretty much always and that energy is THE FREE ENERGY that they do not want you to know about for the last 200 years.       Fusion is excellent and should be pursued but dont rely on it to solve our climate change problems just yet, renewables are much more mature a technology and are ready to solve that crisis now. I'll happily bet on fusion for humanity's long-term future (~100 years) as our energy needs outstrip the diffuse energy extracted through renewables.

      The point in time will inevitably come, when we stop pumping dead dinosaur juice off the ground and instead use sustainable resources for everything. Anything that is not sustainable is, in fact, unsustainable...

    As I viewed this, I was reminded of my first job as a craftsman apprentice, building a nuclear power plant. It wasn’t the intent to make a reminiscence, but those amazing views brought back memories from over 40 years ago. If I were 19 again, I would have loved to help with this great project. Best wishes to the entire ITER team. Lead humanity to the next level of understanding!

      You'll get a guy like Elon Musk putting it together at a Texas farm with duct tapes at a cost lower by factor of 100. Using iterative testing methods churning results monthly until it's done in 2 yrs.

      @@sylwek1177 MIT version (SPARC) of this design is much smaller but at a higher power density. It uses (now) commercially available super conducting magnets thaf are easier to manufacture.

      @@Vagabond-Cosmique look at all this hoopla about a 70 billion dollar plant that is not designed to produce electricity and stands zero chance of demonstrating break even. ITER is designed to give scientists a paycheck. They tell you the supply of energy is going to be cheap, clean, inexhaustible. So let’s start with clean. The D-T fusion is gonna put out a lot of neutrons, those are going to destroy metals and leave them radioactive, that’s going to create repairs and disposal problems. Now add that to the price it already is and explain how it’s going to be cheap and with all the downtime inexhaustible. Then look at the complexity. What do you think the current record for sustained operation of such a device is? A few minutes at best.       ​@@russhamilton3800 in my experience with using neutrons to make a metal radioactive, the half-life was in days. This means the radioactivity will dissipate on its own. Whereas the end products from fission are radioactive for 100,000s of years.
      Yes, the experiment may not immediately produce net energy, or it may fail. One must try, and then try again, if you want to progress. People learn by doing, and then using that knowledge to improve. You are advocating technological stasis, similar to the Amish. Not everyone wants to be Amish.
      If the research was never done to create the transistor, we wouldn't be able to even have this conversation.

You’re going to have to shield it, bury it and it’s going to fuck up electronics if they are anywhere near. See then you bring up fission and if you built a safe molten salt reactor you can actually burn waste and the waste you do generate is manageable because it’s hL is only 150 years. But back to ITER, do you really not know what they are going to burn ? Well it’s tritium! Your neutron problem with radiation is not going to last just a few days now is it? So we now are going to have do what? Breed tritium. Good thing that tritium can be used in fusion bombs right?

      It's more like the last 20% take 80% of the budget. The buildings and infrastrukture that could be installed "off the shelf" are soon all present. That means all concrete poured, all electrical lines layed, all piping installed etc. Then, the precision engineered stuff gets put into place (I've heard they've allready done some of that by now, but still) and all of the value gets added. You've seen the halls - they currently are looking more like general purpose industry building then nuclear research facilities, but that will soon change ;)

    Every time I watch one of those videos, I think about the alien Machine in Contact. In the book, it was sold as "the most complex machine ever built by humans" and "requiring collaboration from multiple nations to achieve the impossible". And just like that, 40 years later, Sagan's dream is about to become a reality, though instead of travelling through stars, we'll be bringing the stars to us.

      If someone hadn't decided to build a bomb... ITER wouldn't exist. Ballistic missiles provided for the space programs and electronics for weapons supports EVERYTHING. Is the way we'd like to progress? No, but weapons development is a major influence in technology.

      @@DavidKnowles0 fission is a lot easier to accomplish, compared to fusion. You could have a fission reactor in your garage. Not so, with fusion. Fusion will take significantly more funding to develop, than fission.

      that's the price of freedom of thought. If one is free enough to create great project of ITER, another is inevitably free enough to attack his neighbor with poisonous gas. So we have to spend some money on military, the same way we're spending some money on the police, courts, etc.

      It depends how you define "works". The flaws in this project have been known since the 1980s. It's certainly employed a lot of bureaucrats.

    It would be so amazing to work on this, I wish more people would get exited about it. This is the modern day equivalent to a international Apollo mission but most people don't even know about it. I commend all the engineers, trades people, scientists, and international leaders putting so much time and effort into propelling humanity into a green and great future.

    it's almost funny how so many SciFi ship designs, forget how much support equipment a fusion engine takes. All that equipment for a modest 28 meters or so reaction chamber, impressive.

      Having high temperature superconductors would help a lot to reduce the size and complexity.
      SciFi takes liberties with science, so they can get to the story.
      In storytelling, some things are "postulates" that are just given as being true. And then given those postulates, then the story is how things go from there. For example, zombies wouldn't be scientifically possible, but no one argues that about a zombie movie, because that is just a given.
