That last look they gave before turning back to fight Vhaegar again was a mutual acknowledgement they were gonna go down together. Makes that whole moment that much more heartbreaking.
On top of that; she signed up for this job, to save Rooks Rest, she knew she had to continue her defense of the castle. She knew Vhagar fell to the ground, and was searching for him. Killing Aemon, and Vhagar would be a absolute victory for the Blacks. SO she did what she thought was best, and finish what she started. Unfortunately Vhagar is just to strong and dangerous for her to fight

We must remember Rhaenys didnt flew to Rook's Rest to battle Vhagar and Sunfyre alone. She was there to defend the castle to ensure it wont fall to the greens. That's why she kept coming back since the battle wasnt over yet. Yes, she could flee, but Rhaenys is Rhaenys and duty compels her to do so.
Rhaenys returned because regardless of the ambush, the order from her queen and the original intention was to secure rooks rest and stop criston cole's advance. she could've easily fled on several occasions but that would mean effectively giving up the crownlands and maybe the war at this point, so she took her chances and decided to fight. she already beat aegon and she saw how ruthless aemond was, so in a sense dhe was hoping she could end the whole war for rhaenyra here once and for all,. In a sense she knew the danger she was in so you could say she was effectively commiting suicide, but she also knew what fleeing would mean for rhaenyras war effort, so she stayed and fought... say what you wil about rhaenys but if she was the queen she seemed the kind to take on the battle herself rather than send people to do the fighting for her, something we see in rhaenyra too, which is why she stands by her
I don’t see Aemond as a villian. He is protecting himself & his family. He accidentky killed Luke yes….so being killed would be an eye for an eye and he knows that . He is angry kid who was ans is still bullied by his brother and nephews. I feel for him… Like yes he is increasingly becoming Daemon… He doesn’t choose NOT to use his power, but what is he to do? He still has to stand with his family. Unfortunately for him he doesnt have a mother or father’s love … He is a product of his environment. He has shown that he feels remorse for Luke, he feels for Heleana… he respects Daemon. He just happens to have this power because of Vaegar. He’s the underdog that now is seen as a villian when he has a good but broken heart inside.

What are the main ingredients if you watched any medieval show is mandrake root it is the main ingredient. There are some others they put in there that causes the baby to dislodge which is very uncomfortable apparently.
Battle of Rooks Rest is even sadder when you know that Vhagar (Aemond's Dragon) and Meleys (Rhaenys dragon) go way back. They used to bonded to Viserys and Daemon's parents and flew together then and then again when Vhagar was claimed by Laena (Rhaenys daughter). Then seeing them turned against each other is so sad. RIP Meleys "the Red Queen" and Princess Rhaenys "The Queen Who Never Was". FYI: Maesters are the learned men of westeros (they only have like one school which produces maester and then those maesters go on to teach the nobility). They're often times doctors as well as scholars. The team green maester also probably speaks high valyrians and saw how humbling that whole exchange was lol

And she was trying to push Corlys to name a successor as well because she KNEW that he is gonna be setting out to avenge her leaving Driftmark Throne vulnerable.
If rhaenys retreats what kind of example is she showing to the people who supported the blacks? She aint no coward. Both side suffered in this ep, greens losing a dragon, the "king" injured, part of their army dead and the blacks losing rhaenys and meleys.... all for this small ass castle.
That's what I thought at first but I think strategically it hurts team Black because they're cut off from the mainland if they lose Rooks Rest (since they reside on Dragonstone, an island). On the map they'll need to take another path through Driftmark which is full of water. Daemon can do something on land but team Black feels like their path is divided now. I'd be interested to see how this affects them strategically next ep.
Greens didn't lose a dragon, as stated by Joffrey in GoT, Aegon had Sunfyre eat rhaenyra, so Sunfyre isn't "lost", just injured. Rhaenyra will die and be eaten by him.

Rhaenys was on a suicide mission when she saw the other dragons, she was there to do as much damage to save her house and her granddaughters, because she knew eventually they would have to fight Vhagar and Sunfyre. In the books, it was Meleys that maimed Sunfyre and Aegon, NOT Vhagar. But changes were made because the showrunners wanted Aemond to have his revenge on Aegon, for the bullying, but also for contempt he felt for his brother's incompetence as King
This show does a great job at foreshadowing what’s to come. If you notice earlier in the episode, Alicent was holding Viserys model of dragon Balerion “the black dread” & she dropped it. One of the wings broke off. Then when Aegon was in his drunken tantrum he knocked the glass pitcher off of the table. There was a dragon on the pitcher and it shattered to pieces. Both foreshadowed 2 dragons going down, but only one was in pieces

Princess Rhaenyra chose Ser Criston Cole because he was already battle tested in the field during the Dornish Marches back in the day. So he's a very capable field commander and military taction when the Dance of the Dragons starts, which gives the Greens a somewhat strategic advantage. As far as King Aegon ll, and Sunfyre both survive barely suffering severe injuries, which puts them both out of commission for the duration of the war.

I think the reason Aegon is so upset about not being listened to is because as Corlys once said "History doesn't remember blood, it remembers names." If he sits back and does nothing all everyone will speak about is how great Cole was in battle and how formidable Ameond was on Vhagar - just like they were saying at the council meeting before he left. He will be forgotten in history if he cannot make a notable contribution. I actually felt bad for him. He didn't want this, he never did. They never even trained him secretly to do the job correctly if they wanted him to have it. And now they belittle him for not knowing enough. He only started wanting to be King during the coronation because the people applauded and praised him, something he never got at home from his family. Alicent is a terrible mother. She didn't even comfort him when his son died and now when she actually speaks to him it is only to make him feel useless and worthless. I know people say that is because she got that from her father but that's not true because other people can go through those same experiences and choose to be much better as parents than their own parents were to them. Simply because they understand how bad it made them feel growing up in a household like that - they overcompensate for it. She is cruel because she wants to be nothing more.

“Finally some action” - this action set piece was really elevated by the multi-episode character work, in episode build, dread of the carnage, and emotionality with the dragons. It had stakes, feels and spectacle. Top notch shit.

The king or any kind of aristocratic lord holding a title is an inherited individual therefore you’ll get different situations of maturity. Sometimes you have babies, children and even teenagers inheriting titles because it’s their birth right and there are grown adults to run the business of ruling for them till they come of age. In the green faction Aegon is the rightful heir that no one can do anything about it. Aegon isn’t dumb, he was neglected by his mother and grandfather and father.
Cole is disrespected because he’s low born. Everyone in the Kings-guard/white cloak is a noble high born. Cole is the only one that was elevated and no one likes it. The old Lord commander and Otto tried to stop Rhaenyra from electing him into the kings guard because of that. Cole becoming the hand was seen as scandalous. Gawain disrespects him because Cole has a higher position but Gawain is high born and holds a higher social status.

Battle of Rooks Rest is even sadder when you know that Vhagar (Aemond's Dragon) and Meleys (Rhaenys dragon) go way back. They used to bonded to Viserys and Daemon's parents and flew together then and then again when Vhagar was claimed by Laena (Rhaenys daughter). Then seeing them turned against each other is so sad. RIP Meleys "the Red Queen" and Princess Rhaenys "The Queen Who Never Was".
FYI: Maesters are the learned men of westeros (they only have like one school which produces maester and then those maesters go on to teach the nobility). They're often times doctors as well as scholars. The team green maester also probably speaks high valyrians and saw how humbling that whole exchange was lol

It HAD to be Rhaenys and Meleys. People are crying…yes I did as well but at the end of the day She redeemed herself because she could have ended it before it began. Also she was counseling Rhaenyra the entire time advising her to hold back from the attack. She died a Queen though. Her death just changed the game. And she was trying to push Corlys to name a successor as well because she KNEW that he is gonna be setting out to avenge her leaving Driftmark Throne vulnerable.
If rhaenys retreats what kind of example is she showing to the people who supported the blacks? She aint no coward. Both side suffered in this ep, greens losing a dragon, the "king" injured, part of their army dead and the blacks losing rhaenys and meleys.... all for this small ass castle.
That's what I thought at first but I think strategically it hurts team Black because they're cut off from the mainland if they lose Rooks Rest (since they reside on Dragonstone, an island). On the map they'll need to take another path through Driftmark which is full of water. Daemon can do something on land but team Black feels like their path is divided now. I'd be interested to see how this affects them strategically next ep.
Greens didn't lose a dragon, as stated by Joffrey in GoT, Aegon had Sunfyre eat rhaenyra, so Sunfyre isn't "lost", just injured.

Rhaenys would not have left the men of House Staunton. She went there to fight on their behalf, she could not abandon them. And she never would have. She was a badass Dragon Lady, the Queen Who Never Was riding the Red Queen. It's not just that it would have looked bad politically if she had abandoned Rook's Rest, she just isn't made that way.
Would she even be able to escape? With aemond riding vaeghar can she lose them? It’s like trying to outrun a bus, you can duck into smaller spaces but when you have no place to run to quickly your done. She got burned by sunfyr and vaeghar already, and then needed to cross an ocean? I doubt she could have escaped

In a 1v1, Meleys stood a decent chance in battle. She was the fastest known dragon and Rhaenys was the most experienced rider during the dance. We saw her completely decimate Sunfyre in both the book and the show. Vhagar had to pull a surprise attack in both cases to take her down.

Rhaenys was on a suicide mission when she saw the other dragons, she was there to do as much damage to save her house and her granddaughters, because she knew eventually they would have to fight Vhagar and Sunfyre. In the books, it was Meleys that maimed Sunfyre and Aegon, NOT Vhagar. But changes were made because the showrunners wanted Aemond to have his revenge on Aegon, for the bullying, but also for contempt he felt for his brother's incompetence as King
I feel like Rhaenys & Meleys were one of the only ones who had a chance of killing Vhaegar. She felt a sense of duty. Went out like a G! RIP.

This show does a great job at foreshadowing what’s to come. If you notice earlier in the episode, Alicent was holding Viserys model of dragon Balerion “the black dread” & she dropped it. One of the wings broke off. Then when Aegon was in his drunken tantrum he knocked the glass pitcher off of the table. There was a dragon on the pitcher and it shattered to pieces. Both foreshadowed 2 dragons going down, but only one was in pieces

Princess Rhaenyra chose Ser Criston Cole because he was already battle tested in the field during the Dornish Marches back in the day. So he's a very capable field commander and military taction when the Dance of the Dragons starts, which gives the Greens a somewhat strategic advantage. As far as King Aegon ll, and Sunfyre both survive barely suffering severe injuries, which puts them both out of commission for the duration of the war.

I think the reason Aegon is so upset about not being listened to is because as Corlys once said "History doesn't remember blood, it remembers names." If he sits back and does nothing all everyone will speak about is how great Cole was in battle and how formidable Ameond was on Vhagar - just like they were saying at the council meeting before he left. He will be forgotten in history if he cannot make a notable contribution. I actually felt bad for him. He didn't want this, he never did. They never even trained him secretly to do the job correctly if they wanted him to have it. And now they belittle him for not knowing enough. He only started wanting to be King during the coronation because the people applauded and praised him, something he never got at home from his family. Alicent is a terrible mother. She didn't even comfort him when his son died and now when she actually speaks to him it is only to make him feel useless and worthless. I know people say that is because she got that from her father but that's not true because other people can go through those same experiences and choose to be much better as parents than their own parents were to them. Simply because they understand how bad it made them feel growing up in a household like that - they overcompensate for it. She is cruel because she wants to be nothing more.

“Finally some action” - this action set piece was really elevated by the multi-episode character work, in episode build, dread of the carnage, and emotionality with the dragons. It had stakes, feels and spectacle. Top notch shit.

The king or any kind of aristocratic lord holding a title is an inherited individual therefore you’ll get different situations of maturity. Sometimes you have babies, children and even teenagers inheriting titles because it’s their birth right and there are grown adults to run the business of ruling for them till they come of age. In the green faction Aegon is the rightful heir that no one can do anything about it. Aegon isn’t dumb, he was neglected by his mother and grandfather and father.

Cole is disrespected because he’s low born. Everyone in the Kings-guard/white cloak is a noble high born. Cole is the only one that was elevated and no one likes it. The old Lord commander and Otto tried to stop Rhaenyra from electing him into the kings guard because of that. Cole becoming the hand was seen as scandalous. Gawain disrespects him because Cole has a higher position but Gawain is high born and holds a higher social status.

alicent is a hypocrite, like she was given her position as queen and ruled for years, and she was annoyed aemond was invited to come to council meetings by aegon because he doesnt have a council position but now she is fine with him making decisions without telling anyone. she really is just awful, like she spent the whole time trying to make aegon king with the intention of using him as a puppet but never once tried to teach him anything or help him.
