Today Alex and Cameron review a BMW Z4 E89.
With a price tag around £12,000 they wanted to know if a car like this could be worth this.
A massive thanks to Harringtons of Fulham Ltd, a friendly used car dealership located in Fulham, London.

Having purchased a 23i as my first car (at 25 y/o, so plenty of time to save up that €19k) I've found it to feel more like a GT car then a sports car. Having driven it around europe for a month, going from hotel to hotel it's been amazing on any of the highways and tourist locations. It's just the right age as well to have gotten things like hill assist and parking sensors as well, so it's just fine for daily driving as well.
Granted I've got nothing to compare it to other then the cars I've test-driven, it manages to give me confidence and communicates well.
It's a daily driver. I have driven mine everyday for the last 8 years. Nearly every day through the summer months roof down.
That is good to hear, they are certainly very capable cars! Glad to hear you've have a great ownership
I just bought one as well, have you done anything to keep the convertible top in good running order?
@@alimehrozi2828 No. Still going strong.
@@flybobbie1449 I use mine as a daily driver too, my only car. Sdrive30i n52 powered. M sport package. White with red interior. I freaking love it. Is there any issues you've run into at all with your ownership? So far I've had mine for a year and I haven't had a single issue
@@alimehrozi2828 Want me to list..Tail lights let in water and short out. 3 wires broke in roof i had to repair. Lose connector in drivers door, windows got stuck down. One ebrake motor failed, water got in. Boot cycles due broken wires in boot locking mechanism. Manufacture fault.

The 30i actually gets it to 60 at around 6 seconds
The 35i however averages 5.1
And the 35is gets it in 4.9
Agree and the z4mcoupe 5
I have an E89 30iSDrive. The 0-60 mph is 5.6 secs, 33 mpg (mixed driving) fuel consumption, 254 BHP -- according to Parkers, which is pretty much what I have experienced during my ownership. The sound of the 6 cylinder (non turbo) N52 engine is addictive!
The steering is actually not bad at all, considering it's not a hydraulic system. I absolutely love the car! The only downside is the boot size with the roof down but it's a timeless design and the interior is a lot better than the MK1 Z4's. I've driven both the MK1 (30Si) and the MK2 (30iSdrive) and in terms of driving enjoyment, perhaps the MK1 has the edge (marginally, in my view) but they're both great cars.
There aren't many around because they had a hefty price tag on them. I got a 35i a couple of weeka ago and although it was built in 2012 it still cost me €25000. I have a feeling that in the future they'll go up in price again rather than down. There is a shortage of spare parts already and BMW will make you pay through the nose for simple items like, say, a switch for a heated steering wheel (about €60 for just the switch, probably costs €0.50 in production, if that).
Would love to try the 35i version!
Im keeping an eye out for the 35is facelift
Hoping to pick one up within the next 6 months
General car prices have been inflated for the past 2yrs, but they are slowing coming down.
100% these cars will start to appreciate within the next couple of years (esp the 35is) so grab one whilst you can.
I’ve got the 3.5i, it does 29mpg now, had it mapped to 3.5s spec and it’s pushing 400 bhp in sport mode. Previous map had less hp and only 26MPG.
The map has been altered to iron out the emissions stranglehold at 30, 50 and 70 mph. Do it, it’s super quick and super smooth.
The wandering steering is definitely the run flats.
Had the car 10 years now, can’t find anything like it on 4 wheels for fun, it’s a manual as good sports cars should be.
Sounds like a serious piece of kit. We are also certain that the wandering steering is the runflats because our F10 520d does a similar thing. Would love to try a 35i version! or better yet maybe in future swap a E92 m3 V8 engine in one like they did for the GT3 car!
Where did you get it mapped?
@@creationtools9541 a local chap who had the BMW codes on his lap top.
It’s been mapped for about 4 years now
Great vid. Ace car. I've got the 2.5.. bit slower, but still gorgeous.
I have a 35i with the twin turbo N54 and absolutely Love it!
The presenters forgot to mention 1 important detail about this car. When the roof goes does, it takes up much boot space! Forget your grocery shopping with the roof down. If you want daily practicality and roof down grocery shopping, go for the 1st generation E85 Z4 roadster. Boot space is the same when the roof goes down. Sweet spot!
True, a trade off for a hard top roof!
Seriously? I am not going to sacrifice all of the benefits of a retractable hard top and newer mode; just so I can carry groceries. Even with the top stowed, as long as you place the groceries in first before lowering the top, it holds an awful lot of groceries. And if you need more space, just F'ing drive home with the bloody top up FFS.
Interesting comments in your video from both of you. Britain doesn't realize how lucky it is to have these knocked down values of 2nd hand cars. Come to Europe where the left hand drive vehicle is much more saleable in so many more countries and you'd realize what a bargain this excellent car is.
It goes from 0-62 in 5.9s though. The 35is with 335hp goes in 4.7s
Sorry yes you are correct got it right the first time
How is the steering feel on these cars. I’m afraid of getting one because I love the feeling of the hydraulic steering racks like in my e90. I’ve tried F series bmw’s and the steering is so numb and just not engaging for me.
Great video guys. Mic volume on the chap with glasses needs upping though. You speak very well, but it was really low throughout the video.
Noted!
The steering problem isnˋt alone from the runflats. I got the same model and I have 2 sets of rims and tires, one for Winter, where all tires are the same width, and one set for Summer, where the back tires are wider than the front tires. Both sets are genuine BMW for this car. with the Set of tires for Winter the car is running smooth, like on tracks, with the Set of Summer tires ( even after I changed the tires from runflat to normal tires), the steering is very nervous and unsteady.
Thanks for the comment, yes other than that the car is very good and the steering is only really an annoyance on the bumpy b roads. however the steering does have great turn in for the corners! Its interesting that the car had no difference with normal tyres on it.
@@HudRodAutomotive yes, the Z 4 is reacting very sensible on different tyres and even different air pressures. I wonder how it will react if I will change the tires to 19“ tires..
@@unglaubiger6663 It could just be that your front summer wheels are either out of balance, or bent.
@@nvl2691 No, definitely they are fine. The problem appears,if I put the summer tires on, 225/45 17 in front an the 245/45 17 on the back. Then the car follows every line in the street, which can be dangerous, if you change from one line to the other one. with the winter tires, all 225/45 17 the car is not reacting on anything at all, runs like on tracks.
@@unglaubiger6663 Hmm. Are the summer tyres runflats?
As others have mentioned around 6 seconds to 60 not 4.9 and the twitchiness in the steering is probably down to run flat tyres. I got rid of the run flats on mine and the steering is fine.
Yep, our bad on the fact check there but definitely still plenty of pace. Also very possible you are correct about the run flats! We find a lot of the BMWs with them can tend to follow the road a lot.
Yes, run-flat tyres. A good idea as there's no spare, but ordinary ones make the car feel much better.
Good stuff guys :D
Well done, greets from Germany!
Thank you very much! hopefully we will be able to visit your country and the Nürburgring soon!
Follows the road, get rid of the run flat tyres. You find you giggle the steering wheel a lot.
If it was our car, we probably would try some different tyres. Definitely the best "mod" you can do to a car
Nice one. But, it's not M package
The 3.0 is the sweet spot engine on these cars. My manual box is a nit notchy. Might be just my car. Also buy with iDrive, just a nice toy.
We agree and honestly most bmw gearbox are generally quite notchy, on the lower power petrols they can require some concentration to drive smoothly too. They are still great drivers cars though!
good guys good job 👌
Does this car have run - flats fitted ? that will cause the steering issues you mentioned.
Very possibly the cause of the problem!
Get rid of rft, they ruin the car. But the steering is a bit wooden compared to other cars.
No, summer tires are non runflats.
Alex, Top Gear just called...they want to know when can you start?
I had the 30i and it's not that fast... 4.9 secs my butt more like 6 secs and not 37mpg.. more like 24mpg.. now I have a 28i z4 and it's faster with the 2.0 turbo about 5.5 secs and does get me 31mpg
When we were on the motorway we managed 37mpg and after it came back down to around 30mpg. It’s still a decently fast car and sounds great as a straight 6
Well i spend 32k euros for a 35i so you got it good in the UK
2:30 Under five seconds to sixty, is more than enough in London... Who drives around London at sixty??? 🤔🤔🤔
Yes it’s very true, it’s way more than enough in London. Some modern cars are overkill
Liking video only bc you didnt go to haram mcdonalds and went legendary kfc instead
Ugly radio 😞
