Yes, The Go-Go's are touring this year and I just saw them play live last month! Jane Wiedlin was so cool she saw a group of young school-age girls and brought them on stage so they could see the show better without those tall adults blocking their view, and they even a let a couple of them dance on stage with them.
HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH. The Go-Go's singer sent solo. One of the best songs of all time. You've probably heard it but didn't know who it was. You gotta do one for it 🙏
Kathy Valentine, the bassist, wrote this song and brought it with her to the Go-Go's from her previous band the Textones. The record company didn't like this one because they said it took too long to get to the chorus, and the band refused to change it and it became one of the biggest, most iconic songs of the '80s. The rhythm section is really working overtime on this one: Gina's ferocious surf-rock drumming and Kathy's driving bassline. Take a listen to what she's doing on the bass during the chorus in particular and you will really appreciate how complex and melodic her playing is.
Fun fact, Kathy learned to play the bass in order to join the Go-Go's. She is actually a very good guitarist.....in fact she's really better than Charlotte. She played lead on several of the songs on their Talk Show album.
@@beckychapman3662 Yes! Most of my favorite Go-Go's guitar solos are on Side A of Talk Show and so for decades I gave them as examples of why I love Charlotte's playing so much. Then a few years ago I found out from Kathy's social media that all those "Charlotte" solos I loved were actually Kathy's! And that Talk Show-era B-side "Good For Gone" is also Kathy, which makes sense because the playing on that one really doesn't sound like Charlotte's style at all. So I asked Kathy and she was like, "Yeah, that was me." It's like the Bangles...Michael Steele was really a guitarist originally but ended up playing bass in the Bangles because that's what they needed. But I think everyone agrees that Michael is a better guitarist than either Vicki or Susanna, and Michael is credited with "additional guitar" on most of their albums.
@@christine3043 (if you were responding to my comment) yes, they definitely changed it a lot from the Textones' version. I meant that apparently the producer or label or someone thought they should change the version that the band brought to the studio *after* Char and Jane worked on it, but the band refused to change THAT version. I think it was KV (or maybe one of the others) who told the story about the label or whoever thinking the Go-Go's version took too long to get to the chorus. I know the Textones' version and of course the core of the song is there, but it didn't become anything close to the version we all know and love until after Charlotte and Jane got involved.
Ahhh, I remember this from my High School days. All the girls loved them. Lots of driving around in the car with this and all the 80's alterna pop blasting on the stereo.
Fun Go GO's facts: It's true that we grew up on the Go Go's on MTV and, yeah they were pretty wholesome. Very much a band parents wouldn't mind their kids listening to. Which is a little bit funny because before they were pop/rock stars they were a *hardcore* thrash punk band with a reputation for cocaine and alcohol fueled hotel-destroying parties. They all grew up and got it together eventually. Its fun to hear their very very early stuff and compare it to how they evolved into the band we all know and love!
Even after they became big stars they still had those parties! Belinda Carlisle actually still has issues with cocaine which is why she doesn't live in the States anymore.
Saw the water ski show in Cypress Gardens back in 1968…..what a great time. Congrats to The Go-Go’s on their induction into the Rock-In-Roll Hall of Fame! Cheers
“OUR LIPS ARE SEALED” is the best one! It’s about not listening to gossip. You guys need to watch their documentary too. It’s so wild! For female Friday the lead singer Belinda Carlisle had some big hits as a solo. My fave of hers is “Circle in the Sand.”
@@ICTS22 angie is talking about that bigger documentary they did just a year and a half ago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Go-Go%27s_(film) You can still watch that on Showtime or Prime Video. AMBER!!!! AMBER!!! I’ve been watching RSR since before you decided to round out the team, and every Friday I keep hoping but you still have not featured either of the top two selling female artists of the 1970s: Helen Reddy and Olivia Newton-John. You have to remedy that immediately! This week! Start with the most influential and powerful song from either of them - Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman” (1970). Amber, you are one of the inheritors of what this song started! It is a song that, IMHO, every woman of any age should know by heart. It was the anthem to which I raised my daughters. AMBER!!! The Bangles are another all female group. Walk like an Egyptian, Manic Monday, Eternal Flame, Hazy Shade if Winter, (which is a Simon & Garfunkel cover. Had the biggest crush on lead singer Susanah Hoff's .
There's a great grrrl rock band that started in the 90s called Sleater-Kinney. They started out punk then more indie/alt rock and eventually hit a Led Zeppelin-esque period. They have alot of fun playful songs ("You're No Rock 'n Roll Fun," "Turn It On," "A New Wave," and "Rollercoaster") among their many great, harder rocking songs ("Dig Me Out," "What's Mine Is Yours," "Jumpers," and "Entertain"). They're pretty amazing.
the names of the band ;) Belinda Carlisle (Lead Vocals) Jane Weidlin (rhythm Guitar) Charlotte Caffey (Piano/ Lead Guitar) Kathy Valentine (Bass) and Gina Schock (Drums) yes, they are touring. mostly in California

check out Go Go's - Our Lips Are Sealed - Live In Central Park & I Wanna Be Sedated - Live In Central Park. this was in 2001 so you get to see them somewhat recently & experiencing them live.
Always loved the Go-Gos! One of my favorite memories of them is from only 4 years ago lol, I was outside on one of those TRUE spring days on my break, and construction all around us. A truck filled with burly workers came to a stop at a red light, blasting "We Got the Beat" & just all singing out loud 😍😂
I was a teenager at the time they were popular. I absolutely loved them. "Our Lips are Sealed", "We Got The Beat", "Head Over Heels" are some of my favorites.
I saw The GoGos in 1983 and it was just a fun show. I’ve always been a big fan of theirs and I was so happy when they were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame this past year. It was so deserving!
Did you ever see their "Behind the Music?" Boy, they had their fun. They said when they played, they'd look for dudes they wanted to party with after their concert. Pretty funny.
Oh, hell yes they still tour! They are super fun live, I've seen them six times. They were recently inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and you should watch it. Drew Barrymore did an awesome introduction, and they played three songs. Amber, I was one of those girls who worshipped them back in the day. I was 15 years old in 1981 when their first album, Beauty & The Beat, came out, and my friends and I were obsessed with them!

You guys would love a tour they're doing this year - not just the Go Go's but Billy Idol - same concert! Alas, it's only in the UK - but they are still touring!
The only US dates I've seen for them for this year were last month in a few cities in California. At the moment the only future dates are in the UK with Billy Idol in June. They do have a website if you want to keep check & they're on Instagram & Twitter.

I believe the time has come for BAND-MAID to make an appearance on the channel. They are not only an amazing ALL FEMALE Hard Rock/Metal band but each and every member can be placed in the top ten ALL-TIME at their respective instruments and are world-class songwriters. They are a truly rare band that you could count yourself lucky to encounter such a band once or twice in a generation. It is not often that one is living while a legendary band is active and in their prime. Band-Maid is one of those bands. I have to say I love your channel because it is nostalgic for me to see someone being exposed to something that had impacted me in my youth and inspired me to become a musician. Now as an old school musician in my 50's all of the tunes played on the channel have done just that inspired me at the time and I feel fortunate I was exposed and saw a large majority of those artists live. I have to acknowledge that alot of this music has gradually faded and exists primarily in the past. That has been the case for sometime now. It was a chance encounter with a former band mate of mine that turned me on to Band-Maid which single-handedly reignited the same charge I received when I was exposed to all these classic bands. What is even more surprising is they are from Japan with vocals that are predominantly in Japanese. I never thought in a million years I would be mimicking the japanese vocals as if I spoke the language, now that is beyond surprising. I urge you to sample Band-Maid, you will not regret it.
Here's a few for female Friday: Margie Joseph ~ Knockout Swing Out Sister ~ Am I The Same Girl Millie Jackson ~ Phuck U Symphony Basia ~ New Day For You Richard "Dimples" Fields feat. Betty Wright ~ She's Got Papers On Me Minnie Riperton feat. José Feliciano ~ Light My Fire Nancy Wilson ~ Guess Who I Saw Today? New Birth ~ Honeybee A Taste Of Honey ~ Sukiyaki Jackson Sisters ~ I Believe In Miracles
The lead singer is Belinda Carlisle and she had a solo career after she left the group. My favotite solo song of hers is "Heaven Is A Place On Earth". (Great candidate for "Female Friday!"
Belinda Carlile, lead singer, Jane Wiedlin, lead guitar, Kathy Valentine, bass guitar, Charlotte Caffey, keys, Gina Schock, drums. The GoGo's were Inducted into the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. YES they still tour, they just played The Whisky in December.
Belinda Carlisle, the lead singer of the band, had a successful solo career in the 1980s too. If you do react to her solo music, definitely check out "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" and "I Get Weak."
I love the Go Gos, they were the first all girl rock band I had saw that played their own instruments! They were so much fun and they were great musicians! Belinda Carlisle is the lead singer (who had a successful solo career in the late eighties), Jane Wiedlin on guitar, Charlotte Caffey on Piano, Gina Schock on drums, and Kathy Valentine on bass guitar! They do still tour and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021…long overdue! ❤️❤️
My favorite of their big hits. I love how there’s a huge (though often unnoticed) contrast between the happy, upbeat music and the sad, depressing lyrics. “Tomorrow’s a day of mine that you won’t be in… I see I was wrong, and I’m not so strong… Six months without you and I still haven’t gotten over you yet… Vacation, meant to be spent alone.” You always hear this in context of happy times, going on a fun vacation, etc. But, man, listen to the words and you’ll want to slit your wrists!
Another great all woman band is The Bangles. Listen to their rock cover of Hazy Shade of Winter or In Your Room, Hero takes a Fall or their love song Eternal Flame.
One of the great things about all the Go-Go's records was how great every one of them sounded. The sound mix on every one of their albums just made every single one of their instruments sound larger than life. Gina's bass drum just thumps you right in the head with every beat.
Our Lips Are Sealed and This Town are great. You will love Taste Of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie. Disco but female guitar players / singer in evening gowns.
they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021

HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH. The Go-Go's singer sent solo. One of the best songs of all time. You've probably heard it but didn't know who it was. You gotta do one for it 🙏
Check out "Goodbye to you" By Scandal. "Hell is for children" by Pat Benatar. "Who's behind the door" by Zebra!
Zebra is fantastic. The lead singer sang on Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now".
Tell Me What You Want by Zebra is a banger.
Loved Zebra! I wish they had received more success than they did.
Cool suggestion of Zebra, although in the context they don't seem to fit with the others. But they are a good band I hadn't thought of in a while.
One of my ALLTIME favorite 80s songs. Patty Smythe and SCANDAL..!
They opened so many doors for the ladies that came behind them. STILL selling out shows. Just got inducted into the hall of fame
Great! My wife and I sing this song every time we begin a vacation. Tradition in our house.
The 80’s had such fun girl bands! It may have been bubble gum, but damn the bubbles we blew!
The Go Go's were big time Alt radio/New Wave radio goddesses back in the day
Boy was this ever an 80's Summer by the pool song! So much fun! Most guys my age back then had bit of a thing for Belinda Carlisle too.
Belinda Carlisle solo-Mad About You, Heaven is a Place on Earth, and I Get Weak, are awesome
"Our Lips Are Sealed" was their first hit.

It is brilliant in that it has such an odd song structure. It has more bridges than verses. Can't think of any other song made up like that

Best of the Go-Go's: "Head Over Heels."
Oh, everybody who said Belinda Carlisle had good solo songs was correct. Some really excellent ones! Good night!
If you haven't seen " Our Lips are Sealed" should be next one you react to by the Go Go's
Belinda had some HUGE hits of her own. Try "Mad about You". Jane too with Sparks "Cool Places".

Our Lips are Sealed was their first hit from their first album 1981 Beauty and the Beat
the Duff sisters (Hillary n Hailey) did very good covers of the GoGos ❤️❤️❤️💕💃💃💃💃
Such a fun group, and talented. Our Lips Are Sealed, just gotta do it. Love their sound. Thanks again.
The lead singer is Belinda Carlisle and she had a solo career after she left the group. My favotite solo song of hers is "Heaven Is A Place On Earth". (Great candidate for "Female Friday!"
Belinda's solo career was really good. My fave song was "Mad About You."
The Go Go's "Our Lips are Sealed" is another great song.
Try the Runaways and the Bangles for other all female rock bands.
Listen to the Bangles!!!!!
My favorite of their big hits. I love how there’s a huge (though often unnoticed) contrast between the happy, upbeat music and the sad, depressing lyrics. “Tomorrow’s a day of mine that you won’t be in… I see I was wrong, and I’m not so strong… Six months without you and I still haven’t gotten over you yet… Vacation, meant to be spent alone.”
You always hear this in context of happy times, going on a fun vacation, etc. But, man, listen to the words and you’ll want to slit your wrists!
Another great all woman band is The Bangles. Listen to their rock cover of Hazy Shade of Winter or In Your Room, Hero takes a Fall or their love song Eternal Flame.
Love The Bangels! Great selection, also try Kim Wilde - Kids in America or Nena - 99 Luftballons (German version is best).
One of the great things about all the Go-Go's records was how great every one of them sounded. The sound mix on every one of their albums just made every single one of their instruments sound larger than life. Gina's bass drum just thumps you right in the head with every beat.
Yes they still your, and still all original members❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Our Lips Are Sealed and This Town are great. You will love Taste Of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie. Disco but female guitar players / singer in evening gowns.
