Throttle Synch R1200 GS

  • After replacing the three sections of throttle cable on my R1200 GS I needed to synchronisation the two throttles, my understanding is that if both cylinders are not receiving the same amount of fuel/air mixture then one will be trying to pull the other forward faster while being dragged back by that other. I believe this can result in excessive vibration, higher fuel consumption and less than full power. The amount of fuel delivered in the form of petrol is determined by the engine management unit while the air depends on how far one or other of the throttles is open, this is synchronised by adjusting the length of one or other of the cables.

Hi Frank 😂...... sorry John !
I've recently bought an 06 GS myself ( built in nov 06) and have been going through the whole bike maintenance thing, oil changes, diff greasing etc. Never having had a big twin before it seemed fine, a lumpy when Cold but other than that, it was Fine. Huh, so I thought, until I watched tbis vid. That inspired to me to knock-up a Manometer, which took all of 20 minutes, as I just happened to have 20ft of plaky pipe In Stock 😁.
Left to Right the difference was about 12" to 15" !!!! On the Manometer at 3 to 4000 rpm... What !!! 🤑. Took me about another 5 minutes to adjust it. Job Done.... the difference is Staggering, so smooth and so responsive.
So anyone out there just do it !
    Thanks John
    Roj

Hi Roj, when I got the silver 2006 GS shown in my most recent films I found that it had been rather badly neglected and as you say what a difference doing this simple job makes, I also found that carefully adjusting the valve clearance made an equally big improvement in the smooth running of the bike, its best if you do this yourself because unless the dealer can let the bike cool right down there will be a false reading on the clearances and I'm sure this makes a difference.
Was the, Frank a reference to Frank Spencer, if so your not the first to spot the similarities, I consider it a compliment Sir.
Thanks for commenting and ride safe, John, oh sorry Frank, from sunny Devon UK.

my vac fluctuates from over 0 to 20 very VERY rapidly. is that valve adjustment?

Hi Adan, to be honest I don't really know as I am only an amiture machine. I wouldn't have thought it was valve adjustment.
I would try and check to see if:
The vacuum gauge is working ok.
You are using the gauge correctly.
Read up on Google, the BMW forums are a good sauce of information and you don't have to join to just read.
Look for more films on RUclips.
It's well worth doing this job as I feelt a real difference in performance and of course the price of fuel means we want the best MPG.
Good luck Adam and thanks for posting, if I think of anything else I post here again.
Regards John from sunny Devon UK 🇬🇧

I was trying to enplane to Chris Evans that you were balancing the carbs, he said surly they have screws to fix them in place, just balancing them sounds a bit hit and miss, wont they just fall of as you are riding along.

+Guy Patrick, do you mean explain, Chris they are screwed on, balancing means getting the same amount of air through each crab, oh and Chris have you finished with my sander, its nearly a year since you borrowed it. Thanks

Hi KWB, it's an April 2006 model, so 11 years old now, it;s mechanically sound but the paint on the engine has deteriorated and the exhaust pipes have gone a brown shade, not rust as the are made of ss, thanks for commenting and good luck if your tinkering with your one, John from sunny Devon UK

Nice video. Try 3000 RPM next time and don't forget to disconnect both stepper motors; Which it looks like you did. The right hand cable is the one to adjust.
