    ❓QUESTION OF THE DAY: Have you tried the SeeStar S50 or any other 'smart' telescopes?

      I have tested the Vaonis Stellina, Unistellar eQuinox and eVScope, I own the Vaonis Vespera and the DWARF II and now I'm waitung for almost two months to test my S50. But the weather here in Germany is pretty bad so I was only able to test the basic functionality for a few minutes.

    Mine was in, and I had 30 minute chance to capture the moon from my kitchen table.
    At first a 20 minute struggle because when I asked it to go to the moon it pointed wrongly. The first capture impressed me because it looked exactly what I see in my Dobsonian with my own eyes. (I am getting older, my eyes are not like it used to be :-))
    The struggle was because the compass in the S50 was pointing in the wrong way. Calibrated the compass and then within minutes it found the moon. When seeing on the PC screen at 4K it is obvious that the images is 2 MP. But on your smart phone it looks great.
    The battery seems to get drained faster when you slew a lot.
    Cloudy and rain, prevents me to test more, but one thing that strikes me is how fast you can set it up. When the cloud suddenly clears up for 30 minutes, you just grab the S50, stick it on some table and start collecting data. No pre-planning or polar alignment needed.
    I plan to use it when I visit friends when it is dark. Stick it their garden, fire it up and let it collect data meanwhile I am socializing.
    I think it needs the phone connected to it all the time to operate.
    And I can't seem to connect to it when it is connected to my guest network. I must connect to it directly.
    S50 works in, portrait mode not landscape mode.

    I don't see the SeeStar s50 as a competition to the big telescopes but as a assistance to play around when you are taking images with the big one. As a backup, to lose some time instead of gaming, or backup images in case the big one fails.

    Got mine about a month ago, had a few clear nights with it now. I would take a guess that I'm probably slap-bang in the middle of the demographic they're aiming for (zero astrophotography experience, minimal astronomy experience).
    For what I want to use it for, its perfect for me: it's light, it's small, it's easy to use, it makes seeing dimmer things very easy to do.
    I have a carry-on backpack I've been using to take it about with me (planning on taking it abroad to various places, and the cost of a decent peli case for one of my other 'scopes & mount & tripod was getting close to the cost of a Seestar).

    Really looking forward to using mine, I still aim to get my Skywatcher 150PDS & EQ35 set up as a more sophisticated rig, but rather than languish on the learning Curve I think this will feed the 'need to achieve' and ease me gently in on DSO capture, plus the ease of setup is a huge plus point for those of us dodging the weather in the Borders.

    HD (1920 x 1080) resolution sounds better than it is.
    You’ll have a hard time to find any smart phone with such a bad resolution.
    Also, the Dwarf can be used in EQ mount. Why can’t Seestar?

  • @olafbaeyens8955
    @olafbaeyens8955 Год назад

    Another question, the sensor is 2 MP, but if I take a lot of shots I assume that the resolution can become 4MP or higher?
    I am pretty new to astrophotography, but I learned the more snapshots (over days, weeks, years....) the better the image becomes.

    • @0815mkl
      @0815mkl Год назад

      It depends on the way you are imaging. If you shoot the same framing every time, your image will still have the 2MP resolution. There is technique called „drizzle“ that artificially increases the reslution. But if you individual images have a different framing (so called mosaic mode), you increase your field of view and therefor also the resolution. By taking a lot of single exposures you in fact increase the depth of your images (signal to noise ratio) what means you can reveal much more details with increasing exposure time.

    • @olafbaeyens8955
      @olafbaeyens8955 Год назад

      @@0815mkl I don't think the s50 has mosaic mode (Because it stacks the images itself and therefore very time consuming)
      But it would be nice if it can be automated to create mosaic or select different targets chosen in a list.

    • @darkrangersinc
      @darkrangersinc Год назад +1

      You can slow down the playback speed with the app all the way down to .25x
      As a fellow Astro content creator I can tell you people don’t watch slower content they click off. You have to go fast.
      So if it is too fast for you personally, then slowing down, the playback rate is a good option.
