  • In this video I will be taking the ZWO SeeStar S50 Scope out to image the moon. I originally aimed to show how quick it was to image the moon but due to tree issues I couldn't do it as quick as I'd expected, still 6 minutes is still very quick start to finish!!!
    Review Disclaimer: Originally was just being loaned the telescope for review but in the end they have offered me the scope for free whilst having issues with a preproduction model. As a result however, I have marked this as a paid promotion because I have benefitted personally from the situation. ZWO haven't asked to see this video or approve anything before I posted this on RUclips.

    Great vid. A good addition to Seestar lunar imaging is a filter holder with a 2 inch neutral density filter so you can even out the surface brightness without creating dark spots on the terminator. I got a set of 3 filters of different filtering intensities. The set with a lined case to hold them cost $30 on Amazon.

      Thanks for this info. I got my Seestar about a week ago. This thing is amazing.

      @txdave2 it’s pretty good isn’t it. I’m looking forward to future ZWO upgrades though. The sensor feels like it could be better.

    However as much as it works on the iPad but annoying is it only shows in portrait mode. I wish it was able to do both.

    I will buy the SeeStar S100 next year, if they increase the resolution and make a proper PC software - so I can access it like any other device on my network.

      I agree higher resolution would be good although PC control feels to me like it’s not really where this device aimed at.

      @astrojourneyuk  9 месяцев назад

      @tomcaron9113 that would be nice. I have mentioned it. You can always manually do it. Or are you thinking of getting the scope to image and stitch? That would be a cool feature.

    • @tomcaron9113

      @@astrojourneyuk Yes, image and stitch. It would address the horizontal issue, at least a bit.

    I spent almost 2 hours doing everything you did probably about 25 times over and over and over and my Seestar refuses to find the moon full moon. Unbelievable must be a bug in this software.

      Oh dear that is frustrating. I have seen on the odd occasion it has worked fine first time and then on other occasions it struggles. The same with finding the sun but platesolving wouldn’t work in that situation. Did you see the moon at all or give up?

    I just ordered one. I am a beginner in this topic. I was always interested in Asto. But the hassle with ordinary telescopes I tried never satisfied me. I just want to look a bit, not fiddle around with pretty analog tech.

    Waiting for mine to arrive. I wonder if there is a way to do exposure brackets in order to lift the shadow area into the visible range? Or will you have to do that manually?

    how did you stack the lunar video clip

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  9 месяцев назад

      Probably badly. 😂 I used Autostakkert which is free software for Mac and Windows. Once the raw avi was stacked I then pulled it into affinity photo (so much cheaper than photoshop) and sharpened, tweaked the white balance and adjusted the contrast using curves.

    Enjoyed your video, but I seem to have issues with Lunar mode............all photos come out slightly blurry using Auto Focus, are you manually focusing? And, if I do a video and use ASI Video Stack the resulting image comes out with a hard to remove blue color cast, have you experience that issue? I seem to get much better lunar images with a DSLR and telephoto lens despite what many seem to say about the Seestar's lunar capabilities. Your thoughts on what I might try to get sharper editable images would be appreciated.

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  9 дней назад

      I tend to use auto focus but select an area to focus on that has some contrast for it to work with. I’m now hitting that age where my eyes see less in focus than a camera would. I must get some glasses!

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  9 дней назад

      It’s an interesting comparison of the SeeStar vs a DSLR. The lens and sensor I wouldn’t be surprised would be better because of the sensor size difference. I think the seestar does manage nice social media and family sharing images but for detail I’d go with an SLR.

      Thanks for the heads up, I have moved the focus area often for Solar shots trying to zero in on sunspots, should have been a no brainer for the moon as well.......will certainly give it a go next time out!

    • @BillMeador
      @BillMeador 9 дней назад

      @@astrojourneyuk Thanks, and I agree...........especially for close ups, I tend to get somewhat fuzzy edges if I try to zoom to 2x or 4x with the Seestar, but sharp images with a 600mm on my Nikon D7500 using a tracker.

    Great presentation, but I have a question. Can this telescope be connected to a computer and detected as a camera, or is it only compatible with a phone app? The main goal is to conduct several-hour live streams on platforms like Facebook or RUclips and observe the moon.

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  Месяц назад

      It’s not something I’ve tried. The usb is just for transfers of images as far as I’m aware. Maybe you could screen cast from a phone or tablet somehow?

  • @andrewsteele111
    @andrewsteele111 9 месяцев назад +1

    Can you not stack with the seestar itself?

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  9 месяцев назад +1

      It doesn’t look like it stacks. You either have the option to take an image which is instant or to record a video or raw avi and you then just get the video files to do what you want with.

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  2 месяца назад

      Mmmm. Possibly. I did you it to image a chimney stack on a house but that was about 50 meters away. There’s a possibly without trying that the target might be too small still.

    How do I stack the video? Is it through the deep sky stack in the app?

    • @astrojourneyuk
      @astrojourneyuk  7 месяцев назад

      For the moon, sun and planets you need a planetary stacking app. Deep sky Stacker only works for nebula and galaxies. Some examples are Autostakkert, Lynkeos (these work on Mac too)
