    This is the next step in its journey to becoming a bonsai.
    Follow me in this video, some ups and some downs … it was a blast!
    Enjoy!

    Coming back to share some thoughts. First off mate, you’re off to a great start with this Kabudachi (clump-style) bonsai.
    I like your use of the soft wrap to aid in the fusion process without much risk of biting in to the trunks!
    Now that you’ve just repotted the tree, I’d suggest your next move is thinking about the hierarchy of your trunks. Most Kabudachi have a prominent center trunk and possibly another secondary prominent (but slightly smaller) trunk. With that in mind, consider picking a trunk or two and letting those run (no pruning to the upper branches).
    For your lesser exterior trunks, I would start thinking about their sub-hierarchy as well, with the goal of having each trunk slightly different in girth and height. For now, maybe some moderate pruning to create that. By the end of the year you should be on your way to seeing a small shift in the hierarchy of your trunks.
    Next season, I would recommend repotting with only minor work on the great progress you’ve already started on your nebari, planting the tree into a large shallow container (Anderson flat or big wooden box) maybe 3-4 times wider than the current container. With that space, you will be able to accelerate both the fusing of your trunks and the speed of increasing the girth and overall size of your prominent trunks. Maybe 2 years in the large grow box.
    When you are happy with your trunk proportions and fusion is well on its way, it will be time to move it into that shallow bonsai pot you discussed in the video.
    It will work out well, and you can go after these same goals in a smaller pot, it will just take much longer. Hope that helps! Let’s connect on Instagram if you want to chat it out further. (Looking forward to sharing my kabudachi in upcoming episodes) thanks for inspiring us all with yours!!
    🙏🏽 🪴 🍁

      Thank you so much for sharing your views. I agree with everything you say and will do just that. One question I have, with the hierarchy of trunks, does the main trunk need to be at the front like in a forest or just in the centre with smaller trunks surrounding? Or does it not matter?…. Will defo up-pot to a larger flat next year, I just want to be sure on fusion so the trunks don’t fall apart. I’m very much looking forward to seeing your Kabudachi style maple in the near future. Thank so much for all your comments and having the time. All the very best.

      @@japanesemaplesbonsai7133 typically the primary/dominant trunk is near the center, and maybe slightly offset to one side. This will also help you get that traditional scalene triangle shape to the overall silhouette of the tree.

      Hi Kevin, glad you enjoyed the video….I enjoyed making that one! The green sieves are from Amazon and they are great for drainage. Just ensure if you use, you put something in the bottom so the soil doesn’t fall out, hence the leaves. The smaller pot is used for ponds but I use for bonsai - called pond baskets and also from Amazon …. I hope someone from Amazon is reading this, I deserve paying for the promotion 😂😂 … Great Barr I’m familiar with having lived in Brum all my life. All the best mate!

    This went well, great when it goes better than expected, although I don’t suppose you’ll do the double pot method again!?
    I need to start using the disk technique that’s worked really well.

    • @japanesemaplesbonsai7133
      @japanesemaplesbonsai7133  7 месяцев назад

      The double pot was because it was summer and I didn’t really want to repot. I could see the roots coming to the edge of the pond basket so decided to up-pot it into a larger pot. Probably won’t do that again but glad I did, as I have the start of a great kabudachi maple. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really do appreciate it.

    Thanks for sharing the video. Having always wanted a clump style grouping, can I ask roughly how long since it was since you first put these together please? Do you have any videos of how you put the clump together and added the disc at all?

      Hi Mike, I’ve only been doing these videos for 5 months and at the time I put the group together (4 years ago) I didn’t even think about taking photos. I do have a video called “Clump Style Maple”. This shows you how to start off a clump with seedlings or any size maple. Then just spread the roots and add the disc before potting up.

    Hi. What is the thinking behind using the pond basket on a maple? Would a large flat tray not be better?

    • @Jacob-yb6bv
      @Jacob-yb6bv 7 месяцев назад

      Pond baskets act like air pots (in theory) which means that when roots come through the holes they hit air and this causes them to die back and ultimately change direction rather than coil around a sealed pot. A pond basket also allows lots of air around the roots making them less susceptible to damp problems. If they weren’t so expensive I’d use them all the time particularly due to the wet climate which causes root damage in the winter.

    • @japanesemaplesbonsai7133
      @japanesemaplesbonsai7133  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Jake, I used the pond basket to grow the roots as much as possible so the trunks would fuse. Using a basket, when the roots get to the outside they die off which causes more finer feeder roots inside the basket. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @jakesnelling8331
      @jakesnelling8331 7 месяцев назад +1

      @Jacob-yb6bv I understand the air pruning bit. But that only works if the roots are exposed. But in this case, they were protected by the second pot.
