    If you wrap that celery in tin foil to refrigerate it will stay crispy longer. And if it goes soft, throw it in a freezer bag with other vegetable scraps either from cooking or if they start to turn on you. Once you have a few gallons of frozen scraps, throw them in a LARGE stock pot with water. Add salt, or not.. bring to boil, then let simmer to intensify flavor, then strain it. Not only do you save money on buying vegetable broth but you also don't throw away money when you toss veg that you didn't use. I use Mason jars to store what I make. Beware that too many cruciferous vegetables will make bitter broth. 💚✌

    • @Maryaminx
      @Maryaminx 3 года назад

      Are there any veggies you should avoid putting in for stock? I started to do this but then I realized I didn't know what should go in or not.

    • @unapologeticvegan
      @unapologeticvegan 3 года назад +2

      @@Maryaminx i use a ton of carrots, celery, red onions and bell peppers... because thats what we eat a ton of. But I've also thrown zucchini and other squashes in there. Small chunks jalapeno, peices of garlic and ginger root (these will add heat so if you don't like spicy omit) You can throw in a little of the cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, or cabbage but these veggies in large quantities will add a bitter flavor. It usually takes a few months to accumulate enough frozen scraps to make a big batch of broth but homemade tastes so much better.

    • @CheapLazyVegan
      @CheapLazyVegan  3 года назад +3

      smart! I usually put the celery in water to keep them from getting soft. and actually when they go soft, i just add them in water for a day and it's fine after! :) thanks for the suggestions, i need to do this more often instead of throwing away scraps!

Also where I live we have an Aldi's market, they have a plant based burger that is just as good as the beyond burger and is only $3.50 U.S. for 2 patties, plus they are always going on sale.

    I'm not usually into meat substitutes, as I never liked meat much, so I don't find myself trying to substitute for it, but I do like to try them now and again, just to see what's what. This week Lidl Germany is doing their veganuary offers, which means they have specific extra products for veganuary that they usually don't offer and they have vegan "fish" fingers in the frozen section made out of cauliflower and rice flour. I baked them in the oven and omg they are so much better than actual fish fingers ever were! I mean, I expected them to be ok since you can't really go wrong with cauliflower and rice, but they were so yummy and the breading so crispy and tasteful, I ate them without a sauce or anything, they were so good on their own I couldn't stop eating them 😅 I'm going back to buy a few more packages to store in the freezer (I unfortunately only have a small one) and I think I'm actually going to beseech the Lidl customer service to see if they can make it a store staple. I hope it gets bought enough for that.
    Besides a vegan döner kebap bites substitute this really was the best "vegan alternative" food I ever had!

    I second shopping in the international section to compare prices. Often spices are way, way cheaper.
    However, I do caution against the notion that budget stores (Superstore, No Frills in Canada) are universally cheaper than mainline stores. I tried to buy plant milk from No Frills and they only had a couple of varieties for the high end of normal. I went to Safeway for cheaper, more preferred options. Of course, this totally depends on your ability to shop at multiple places!

      truth! sometimes, stores marketed as "budgetfriendly" are not really. i've seen things in dollar stores that seem cheap but then you go to regular stores and it's the same price or less!

      Okay No Frills sucks, but Superstore is probably the best one stop shop for vegans in Canada

    I feel the same way about chickpeas. I need them, black beans, and crushed pineapple in my pantry or all my meals will not work.

    What do you guys think about plastic waste? I’m considering switching to a vegan diet but most vegan recipes call for ingredients I can only buy in plastic..

    Was that loaf of bread baked without egg?

    The oat based yogurt from that brand tastes like those vanilla protein powders. I was not a fan. There mango passionfruit one with the coconut base will always be my favourite. The costco that I go to one a month has this flavour in an 8 pack for their small pots(1 cup serving containers).
