  • Can a $1,000 rifle setup stretch out to a 1,000 yards? We advocate that it can. On this episode we take a used Savage 10, TPS rings, and a used Vortex PST 2.5-10 power and take you from the initial zeroing of the rifle to connecting with a 16"x16" steel plate at 1,000 yards.

    You're not going to believe this, but that's okay. I have an OLD 1997 Browning A-Bolt II rifle in 30-06 with a 20 inch factory barrel. It came with a Browning BOSS system on a thin sporter barrel, so after 3 shots I have to let the barrel cool down. With 178 gr ELDx Hornady factory ammo it's a 3/4 moa gun. I can hit 1k targets all day. Anything from silhouette targets to 10 inch round plates. I pillar bedded AND glass bedded the action myself. I also hand lapped the barrel myself. I also filled the stock to stiffen it and to better balance the rifle and changed the trigger spring to get the trigger pull down to 1.5 lbs. After many years of good service I dropped the rifle and cracked the stock so I replaced it with a Boyd's stock. As you know Boyd's does a pillar bed on the front hole only, so I added pillar bedding to the rear action screw and glass bedded the full action.

      Savage 12 LRP in 260rem in my opinion. 147gr ELDM and 45.5gr 4831sc(2801fps with half minute groups). Destorys the 308 in precision.

    I did a similar project about 12 years ago and ended up with a M700 VSS 308 with a 26 inch barrel and a factory HS Precision stock that already had a V bedding block in it from the factory. Paid $600 for it at a gun show. I put a Leupold base and ring set on it for about $150 and found a limited release Simmons Prairie Master 6x24x50 for around $150. After adjusting the trigger a bit, we stepped it out to 1000yds with Hornady 308 168grn Match and still to this day we get 3/4 to 1/2 MOA on a consistent basis. I have been really suprised with the setup over the years. The rifle has shot consistent and the only time that I have ever had to rezero the the rifle is when I tried to switch over to BH Match a few years ago.
    1000 yds for $1000 can easily be done if you pick your equipment carefully.

    I love it. Take a used hunting rifle and make it work out to 1000 yrds. I have also taken a lot of common rifles and with a little sanding glass bedding and trigger work with low end scope shoot amazing. Just need to put a little love into them.

    YEars ago I built a Mauser action rifle in 300 WIn mag with a Shilen barrel for a lot less that put 10 rounds on a stop sign at 1000 yards.

    Newbie here: What is the purpose of calling out shot placement after each shot when doing a 3-shot group? It would seem that the whole purpose of establishing accuracy of load or of scope setting is defeated by calling out shot placement.

    I agree, Savage is a great platform. I bought a Savage vt 11, 24" heavy barrel accutrigger new on sale $389.00. I bought a SWFA 12X42 mil rad scope for $299.00. and low profile tactical rings for around $50.00. also now Primary Arms has a great 308 DMR HUD scope for $379.00. I grouped at 100 yards, than went out and grouped at 200 yards and slipped the turrets for a 200 yard group. With the following ammo it shoots 1/4 MOA (figure 8 to almost bullet in bullet at 100 yards). 168gr Hornady A-Max match (it hates the 168gr A-max Black series). 168 BTHP Hornady Match, as well as 178gr. but for the best grouping at 500 yards, the winner is 168 or 178 gr Federal Premium Gold Series Sierra MatchKing. I'm not a big fan of bi-pods, either a Caldwell 383774 front rest with a bag filled with walnut compound from cleaning shells. Or just sand bags. And I have made it to 1000 yards. for precision I like the SWFA, especially for wind hold-off. But to be honest I trade a Savage Axis lowest end rifle to get the VT 11. But I will say with some bedding and lighter trigger spring, the Axis shot 1/2 inch MOA.

    Don't be quick to troll my idea I'm ready to go to range it shows very good at short ranges ( remember metric calibers have several bullet Dia. To choose from ) and very tunable trigger pull plus adding a cheap cheek weld plastic riser ; 7.62 x54 head spaces on rim not shoulder so 1 time fired brass will fit perfect in chamber

  • @Rucksack57
    @Rucksack57 7 лет назад

    A nice tool I saw was a phone bud camera. I have found that you should really check the chamber out on all guns for tooling scratches in the chamber. I have purchased two Remington 700 one used a 1972 and the other new 2009 that had deep circular cuts in the chamber that scared the brass. Remington polished the new one for me the used one they have blown me off on even though it had never been shot much in the years. Its a pain in the butt to ship your rifle out for work.

  • @trinab9612

    Was this accomplished all in one day? When shooting to check ammo performance did you allow any cooling periods for the barrel? Was the barrel swabbed at all between groups and at what intervals?
    BTW the longest public range I know of, the Harrisburg area, is 300yds on the State Game lands up above Carlisle off RT 944. You need an annual $30 permit and if you follow the rules there is 3 round limit in guns and magazines.

      Buds guns has got the savage 10 sba in 6.5 cm 223 and 308 for 368$ brand new. I just bought one in 6.5 cm and put a nikon 4x12x40 buckmaster 11 on it for 135$. The rifle came with a 20 moa egw rail and I went with monstrum rings for 12$. Total cost $515 and it shoots 1/2 moa all day. So far I have shot 100 200 250 and 500 yards and it shoots 1/2 moa on average at all those distances I'm sure 1000 yards is very doable with this rifle for only $512 with all new parts.

      I buy all of my guns cheaper than my local gun shop can buy them. I buy used guns from my dealer, new ones I buy online and I pay under dealer cost for just about all of them. try sites like wikiarms to find the lowest prices, dont be in a rush to buy anything, wait for sales.

    I know this private land but how do know there is no one hiking there? Do you recommend shooting without a firm back stop? Where do the projectiles go if they do not hit the steel? For all the safety trop preaches at the range this 1000yd line set up looks rather dangerous to me.

    • @TropUSA
      @TropUSA  9 лет назад

  • @MrIdasam
    @MrIdasam 7 лет назад

    I guess I don't understand what the challenge is of hitting a target at 1,000 yards with a rifle like this. Carlos Hathcock was hitting targets in Vietnam at a 1,000 yards and beyond with a Winchester Model 70 hunting rifle chambered in 30.06 using an 8x scope. The Berdan Sharpshooters made some very impressive shots during the civil war using much less.

    .308 seams like a lousy caliber for 1000 yards? .243, .260 , 300 win mag all have less drop and higher velocity.
