Most call it "trace", and yes - it's the bullet causing a disturbance in the atmosphere that's visible through the spotting scope. Spotters for snipers will use this to call the shot and give the sniper/shooter adjustments to their hold-over so they can get on target for the next shot.
I don't know what Savage firearms does with the rifles, but they one of the best accurate barrels on the market for an American made rifle and a factory rifle at that
I have a Walmart Savage 10 chambered in .308 . Paid almost dirt for the rifle. I have a Vortex Crossfire II 6-24x50 for $300.00 and I can reach out to 1000 yds. Savage and vortex makes a great combo !! Plus I LOVE the accu-trigger.
No issues with the Accu-Trigger. I like it quite a bit, it is one of the best out of the box triggers I've used without going to a 3rd party match trigger. As for the stock, it's too short for me and the comb is less than ideal. However, this is a budget build and there's no room for a McMillan or Manners stock in the budget.
Agreed. I bought a Savage 10 T from Cabelas on sale for $403 and it's a 1/2 MOA gun all day long... I would expect that out of a $3k GA Precision rifle, but a $400 Savage?! I'm sold!
drfroglegs Savage rifles have one of the best or the best factory barrels and I speak from owning a few of the other brands, including Remington and Browning
drfroglegs me too! I have a 112 BVSS, and it also shoots 1/2 MOA at 100yds ALL day long! I'd trust my life to the accuracy of a Savage rifle... I'VE HAD IT FOR 19YRS, AND IT'S AS ACCURATE AS IT WAS AFTER I FIRED THE FIRST FUCKING SHOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
drfroglegs ditto. In fact I put a model 10t up vs an rpr and savage stealth, all in 308. The 10T shot sub 1/2 MOA using fggm and the 185 grain juggs. 1000 meter and beyond load right out of the box. The 10T is the best value on the shelf. Precision capable for pennies.
you poor, poor man. have you tried any other remington products to see if they work better for you? i only know one other guy in the world who has that bad of luck with rem.....wait a minute. YOURE HIM!!!
That's because the 870 is an old design now being made with bad workmanship. Bolt actions are supposed to be overbuilt. We're all used to overbuilt bolts. So an underbuilt one makes your head spin.
spraynpray when i bought my 870 5 years ago i put 200 rounds through it, then went skeet shooting and half way into the shoot i pulled the trigger abd the gun didnt go off..6 secounds later and BOOM it went off. never buying a new production remington product again. plus theyre customer service sucks.
I keep coming back every day hoping to see part two. Its kind of like watching a great show that leaves it at a cliff-hanger with the words. "To be continued... Next week".
My M111 .300 Savage didn't seem to do well at all with factory ammo but when I used my handloads with Sierra matchking bullets I put four rounds in two holes. I'll probably never see that kind of accuracy any time soon.
So, part 1 covered mostly covered NOT the savage model 10. Mostly a Reaper and a scope that didn't work. I'm excited to see if you review the Savage in part 2...or if instead you review truck tires and shooting gloves.
5k for a rifle that cant' shoot a one inch group at 1000 yards, That would piss me off, considering you can save up and buy a Barrett 50 cal and just be done with it. I think that is what I would do. I mean if I had 10k to spend on a long range rifle. But most ranges don't go out to a mile sadly lol.
One worthy scope of mention that someone here probably have mentioned is the SWFA SS in 10x42 mil/mil. I don't know if Primary Arms have mil/mil reticles available (in stock) at this time. I had to purchase their HUD system....I should do a review on it.
I'd say slap the money into a fixed power scope for that low amount of cash, more robust with more features & better glass. a 12x or 16x SWFA SS should fit the bill nicely, and still leave a hefty chunk of cash for the rifle.
unless your are doing competition, 1 MOA is probably more than enough. If you are trying to hit a man sized target out to 1000 yards then, if the MOA holds (which isn't always true) you will have a 10" group at a 1000 yards. The average man is 22" across from shoulder to shoulder.
I toured the LWRC plant and the repr is the best ar-10 on the market. That is truly a beautiful firearm and I would love to have one. LWRC has one of the highest quality rifles out there and it’s so sick that you have a repr
I'm also building a 1000 for a 1000. I opted for a Savage in 6.5CM and was very happy with both the factory Hornady and my hand loads shooting a consistent 1/2 moa even with the kit scope(which I removed). Instead of a variable power I opted for a fixed power swfa 10x since fixed power scopes tend to give better results for cheaper prices. Haven't got an opportunity to get on the 1000 yard line yet but I'm very optimistic that this setup will reliably hit steel at a grand.
savage model 10t-sr in 6.5 creedmoor 24" barell (W/ SAVAGE $100 REBATE ($550)), burris xt low rings($50), swfa 12x42 ss scope(ON SALE $250). love this gun! Great trigger. TOTAL: $850! LOVE THE CHANNEL AND ALL YOUR VIDEOS!
Mac, great episode! Couple comments from a fellow Young’s member. The 168 SMK is going to give you problems in a 308 with consistency from one day to the next. Depending on the Barometric Pressure and Temperature of a given day it may or may not work well past the 800 yard line. It’s an issue with how the bullet is designed and how it handles the transition to subsonic flight. The 175 smk works a lot better and handles the transition well. As does many other bullets.
I just stumbled across this channel and I love the way your going about this series. With a mortgage, car insurance, a limited paycheck and the rest of it I have to be very budget conscious about my firearms purchases. I would love to throw cash at a Gucci rifle but that's not going to happen and to be honest I'm not going to spend my life at a range. Its nice to see what a sub $800 rifle can do. Many thanks! Also, ever thought of doing a series where you take an average Joe interested in shooting and build them up into a better shooter. Just thought it might be entertaining.
Curious as to why you chose an 18" barrel for a 1000 yard gun? Sure shorter barrel is stiffer, but velocity still needs to be maintained for 1000 yards. Shooting .308 168MKs, are you staying supersonic past 800 yards? In my mental math I can't see it working too well. Perhaps the 175's will stay supersonic, but no way to get the velocity high enough for the 155 Palmas out of 18" barrel. What is your ballistic calculator showing for retained velocity at 1000 with the 168s and 175s?
Also, they track very well, I've never heard anyone complain about any of the HDMR/G2DMR/ERS/XRS not tracking. I've seen one XRS go down, but all scope brands will have a few bad apples in the bunch. That includes brands like S&B. I've dragged my Bushnell though about everything and it does nothing but preform.
I have a Savage M11 Hog Hunter, very similar to what he is testing here today. My optic is a Redfield Revenge 3-9X42 and it will shoot very impressive groups. You can keep groups around 1 inch at up to 300 yards. With me shooting it, that is pretty good!
I have the Mark 6 on my match rifle. It's a great scope. I did an overview on it and I'm working on part 2 right now. I've used it on targets out to 1100 yards with out any issues.
Awesome video! I would love to see more in this series, exploring the topic of high value weapons systems for different uses is much appreciated! thanks!
Good shooting. One of the advantages of the bolt rifle is that you can single load a lot easier than you can with a semi-auto rifle. I would take advantage of this. Recoil tends to compact the powder in your rounds if they are in the magazine, this can grow group sizes a bit especially if the loads your using are using stick powders. You may not notice a difference shooting 10 rounds here and 20 rounds there, but over the course of a 1000 rounds of recorded data it does make a difference. Hornaday also makes amazing match ammo. The Federal match is still the best match center-fire ammo I have ever run into but Hornaday is a close second. Black Hills ammo is another excellent ammunition if you can find it. I happen to live in the same town that they produce it in, so it's pretty easy for me to get but I'm not real sure about anywhere outside of South Dakota.
Thank you for finally doing more of a 'budget' build. I know you prefer military style builds, but think you've been missing another market area like this build. I've been debating on a Ruger 308 build to play in the 500-1k range, and this will be interesting to compare if you guys do a match build with a Ruger.
I traded my 10fcp for a 10dt in 6.5cm and topped it with a PA3-18 and it flat shoots! I’ve loaded everything from nosler and Sierra in the 120-147 gr and it drives them all like a laser.
very impressive review and shooting! if you're going to be doing more of this type reviews and doing more long distance shooting i can't wait!! it take a different set of skills when doing this type of shooting and it looks like you are doing it right!! can't wait for part 2!! thanks!
And the Savage barrels usually take about 500-1000 rounds to get maximum accuracy. My Savage 110 actioned with Adams and Bennett barrel in .35 Whelen shot its first target into a sub MOA group at 100 yds. I hav not had a place to shoot very long ranges with it but I have no fear it will do fine out to 600. Oh, and by the way, that was with 250 gr. Remington green box.
@Military Arms Channel I like Savage rifles. They are nice rifles for the cost. I know the Savage FCP-10K LE rifle was about $829.99 with a scope a while back at my local shop here in California. That is basically a fully upgraded version of the rifle you have in the video :D
This may be my favorite series you've ever done, I love long range shooting. I'll also be interested to see what you have to say about that Lucid L5. Lucid has become my default for budget optics, I've been thinking about an L5 for a while now.
I took my G2DMR off my rifle, left it in the rings and beat the living snot out of it on a rubber matt in my garage. I was trying to get some dust off of the glass. I figured if it did not come off I did not care how hard I hit it as I would send it in anyway. When I was done, I put it back on the rifle, and it did not move the zero at all. Not even one click was needed. The new Bushnell scopes are tough as they come. I've had 3 and they are beasts. The dust came off the scope in the 2nd shot.
Good vid as always MAC! If you want to add a humor element, turn the auto captions on. "I'm going to fire this rifle over the chrony" turns to "I'm going to far this rifle over the Crimean"...
Great point! For that matter a Bushnell Elite Tactical 10X40 fixed in the mil/mil version is even less and has pretty good glass. I think if your budget demands you choose, it is better to go with mil/mil and good quality glass, rather then spending your money on variable high magnification with lesser quality glass.
When I shot for the USAF Rifle Team, we used the 168 Fed Gold Match back to 600 yes, but we had to shoot the M118LR with 175gr SMK, because the 168 would go sub-sonic before 1000yds and key hole through the target.
What a great report! Thanks! I look forward to hearing more on budget shooting. To be able to play in the thousand yard range for about a grand would be awesome!
It's the system, and the work done ahead of time. You can't put first-shot cold-bore hits on targets at unknown distances in the 800-1200yard and beyond range, in varied terrain without having worked up the firing tables for the rifle and loads to be used. It's all important when calculating and inputting the firing solution. Often overlooked is the accuracy and repeatability of the scope turrets, absolutely crucial for long range precision.
I bought my father a Savage Model 12 F/TR for his birthday and we mounted a Millett 4-16x50mm on it. (I had run out of money at that point). Pretty soon I want to put a Bushnell HDMR on it. Haven't gotten to take it out to distances above 300 yards yet. But it's promising.
MAC, you're going to want to go with 175's or 180's for the 1000 yard shot. The wind-bucking is what makes it at that range, and those just do it so much better than the 168's. Love the 10 FCP series though, they're a great bargain. My FCP-HS is a half-MOA rifle at whatever range you'd fancy to shoot.
I just looked at The Savage Model 10 at my local gun shop. I was in the market for a long range multi purpose rifle and scope for under $1000. I also looked at a Weatherby Vanguard, Remington 700 and a Tikka T3. I ended up choosing the Tikka due to its amazing fit, finish and feel. I would love if you looked at both the Weatherby and Tikka in this video series.
Very good video, well done. I'm a big Savage fan myself. I have one of their Model 12 BVSS rifles in 22-250 Remington for ground hogs/target shooting. Its proven to be one of the most accurate rifles I've had the pleasure of owning. I certainly don't consider myself an expert, but in my opinion if I were trying for 1,000 yards for $1,000, knowing all the awesome rifles Savage offers in the model 10 lineup I would certainly choose one with at least a 24 and preferably a 26 inch barrel. Unless of course you plan to run the suppressor all the time. Just seems like an 18 inch barrel is giving up a lot when the same rifle with a longer barrel can be had for the same or close to the same price. Enjoyed it all the same, looking forward to Part 2.
MAC I have the Savage 10-FP LE2 in 308 with the 24 inch barrel and a nikon buckmaster 6-18x40. The whole rifle and scope cost $900 I regularly get 1/4 groups at 100 yards and 2 inch groups at 600. I can't wait to find a 1000 yard range to try it out at.
I have the same exact rifle with a similar scope. I work in a gun shop and often tell people, as they're drooling over mine, "I can get you a 1000 yard rifle for about $1000" Sold!
Thank you these videos. Builds with a fixed budget are hard to do, and have a large margin of error. This helps tremendously. fixed budget builds on ARs, AKs, Miltary surplus weapons rebuilds would all be great additions as well.
I have a Savage 111 FCNS in 7mm Rem Mag w/ an SWFA 10x42 mil/mil/side focus. It's a great optic for the price - hard to beat, really. That will get you out to 1000 meters reliably and for around $1k (although I am putting a new $1,000 chassis on it soon). I love the Accu-Trigger on mine.
I love my PWS brakes, they are FANTASTIC. Their muzzle devices are some of the best out there for the money. I also have their Mk116 Mod 1 in .300 Blackout and they make some amazing rifles too. If you ever get the chance to shoot one and break it down you should, they are quite nice :-D.
I have an older Savage 110 Tactical, and I like that rifle. Mine is a little like yours in what ammo it likes. It's great with 168gr Federal Gold Medal Match. It even likes the Hornady Match ammo in the same weight. I've tried Remington's 168gr match ammo, and it looks like I fired a shotgun pattern.
Howa 1500 Varmint in .308 Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 optic EGW 20 MOA base Burris Extreme tactical rings B&C medalist stock This is my goto rig for the 1000 yard line.
Start working with what you have, but longer distances. You have any glass on that rifle? Weaver v7 scope can get you out where you want to be. There's guys out there that can shoot 400 open sights. It's pretty much just for target acquisition/identification. That scope is around 150-180. 5.56 is capable of 600+, for paper punching. Requires better reading of distance/wind, which is good. Learning the basics, saving money. It's a long road to 1000 on a budget.
Most call it "trace", and yes - it's the bullet causing a disturbance in the atmosphere that's visible through the spotting scope. Spotters for snipers will use this to call the shot and give the sniper/shooter adjustments to their hold-over so they can get on target for the next shot.
Very well spoken and obviously comfortable on camera. It's nice to see someone who prepared to be making videos
Yes! Articulate, prepared and does not stutter! A very pleasant switch form the duh - duh - duh's.
I am very happy with the direction this series is headed. The combo of your personality & commentary & low $ long range has got me glued here!
I find watching "racing to make the most cost effect" 1000yd rifle is far more exciting than watching "taticool" rifles that costs outrageous amounts.
Id go with bergara or tikka over savage all day
I don't know what Savage firearms does with the rifles, but they one of the best accurate barrels on the market for an American made rifle and a factory rifle at that
I have a Walmart Savage 10 chambered in .308 .
Savage rifles make even some of the $3000-$4000 long range rifles look silly.
Yes they do
Agreed. I bought a Savage 10 T from Cabelas on sale for $403 and it's a 1/2 MOA gun all day long... I would expect that out of a $3k GA Precision rifle, but a $400 Savage?! I'm sold!

drfroglegs ditto.
I really like the Vortex scopes.
Yup, I'm thinking about that and which is why I said we may be going to the 20" barrel.
"Remington Match" in my world translates to "Somalian Plinking Load" or "Machine Gun Food".
you poor, poor man. have you tried any other remington products to see if they work better for you? i only know one other guy in the world who has that bad of luck with rem.....wait a minute. YOURE HIM!!!
I've yet to use a Remington product made in the past 20 years that isn't complete trash. Four calibers of ammunition! FOUR! That's enough to be sure.
That sounds alot more like an amunition problem than a problem with the firearm
I keep coming back every day hoping to see part two. Its kind of like watching a great show that leaves it at a cliff-hanger with the words. "To be continued... Next week".
I have one Savage 10TR. Absolutely amazing gun, is worth every dollar spent.
Great Video MAC, I have been watching this channel for years and you do some really nice work.
I have one of these that I had converted to left hand. I absolutely love it.
My M111 .300 Savage didn't seem to do well at all with factory ammo but when I used my handloads with Sierra matchking bullets I put four rounds in two holes. I'll probably never see that kind of accuracy any time soon.
This is the first time I have seen one of your programs. This is very informative You have 2 new fans, my son in law and me.
So, part 1 covered mostly covered NOT the savage model 10. Mostly a Reaper and a scope that didn't work. I'm excited to see if you review the Savage in part 2...or if instead you review truck tires and shooting gloves.
Nice seeing the bullets lob down to the plate.
Good shooting, and looks like a fun day!
I have a feeling these are going to a AWESOME series of videos!
I love how you can see the bullet traveling to the 500 yard target at the end. Great stuff mac!
Mac I love these reviews. Don't know if these purchases are leaving a dent in your bank account but hope you can still keep reviewing firearms.
5k for a rifle that cant' shoot a one inch group at 1000 yards, That would piss me off, considering you can save up and buy a Barrett 50 cal and just be done with it. I think that is what I would do. I'd say slap the money into a fixed power scope for that low amount of cash, more robust with more features & better glass. a 12x or 16x SWFA SS should fit the bill nicely, and still leave a hefty chunk of cash for the rifle.
And good ammo. remington match, isn't.
I was hoping this would show up soon. Great idea for a vid.
Thanks, Will.
unless your are doing competition, 1 MOA is probably more than enough. If you are trying to hit a man sized target out to 1000 yards then, if the MOA holds (which isn't always true) you will have a 10" group at a 1000 yards. The average man is 22" across from shoulder to shoulder.

The bullet trails at the end if the video = awesome.
savage model 10t-sr in 6.5 creedmoor 24" barell (W/ SAVAGE $100 REBATE ($550)), burris xt low rings($50), swfa 12x42 ss scope(ON SALE $250). love this gun!
Also, ever thought of doing a series where you take an average Joe interested in shooting and build them up into a better shooter. Just thought it might be entertaining.
that group with the REPR was INSANE!
What is your ballistic calculator showing for retained velocity at 1000 with the 168s and 175s?
I know you are but what am I?
I just got one too. I also went with the ss 10x. I have shot about 20 rounds and am very pleased with the combo.
I have a Savage 10FLCP-K with a sightron SIII 6x24x50. I make my own hand loads for this rifle and it is incredible. Love the savage 10.
That vapor trail at 500 yds looks pretty sweet! Can't wait for part 2 to see how the setup does. Great job!
This is going to be a great series. Thanks MAC!
LOL. That 2013 smart phone with the miniscule screen. Great video to this day. Thanks!
Yes, it does.
I have a Savage M11 Hog Hunter, very similar to what he is testing here today. My optic is a Redfield Revenge 3-9X42 and it will shoot very impressive groups. You can keep groups around 1 inch at up to 300 yards. With me shooting it, that is pretty good!
I am very interested in this video series! Glad youre doing it.
Great video of the bullet tracking down range, always one of my favorite parts of long distance shooting
I have the Mark 6 on my match rifle. It's a great scope. I did an overview on it and I'm working on part 2 right now. I've used it on targets out to 1100 yards with out any issues.
Thanks for posting Mac. I have a model 11 in .308, and have had almost identical results as you did with 168 grain SMK
WOW!!!! Wow MAC!!! That reaper group was sweet!! Nice vid on the savage. Great topic to get ya thinking.
Good video! I like how you said you ran down range as your sitting in a golf cart lol.
Awesome video! I would love to see more in this series, exploring the topic of high value weapons systems for different uses is much appreciated! thanks!

Very cool! Cant wait to see the rest of the series, MAC! Great shooting
I just snagged up the same rifle yesterday. Going today for some range time to sight her in. I bought a SWFA SS fixed 10 with Seekin precision rings.
Keep these videos coming man! It would be awesome to see more precision rifles being tested.
What a grouping! Great video, MAC.
Yes, he has. RUclips was giving me fits last night.
I traded my 10fcp for a 10dt in 6.5cm and topped it with a PA3-18 and it flat shoots! I’ve loaded everything from nosler and Sierra in the 120-147 gr and it drives them all like a laser.
Yes, I posted a video on it. I've gone with the ELCAN SpecterDR.
5” group at a grand.....Outstanding! I could live with those numbers.....
I should be picking up my Savage Model 111 in .300 Win Mag after work today. I'm so pumped.
Wow I've never seen a group like that at 1000yrds with a semi-auto rifle. That is defiantly a group even an experienced sniper would be proud of.
very impressive review and shooting! if you're going to be doing more of this type reviews and doing more long distance shooting i can't wait!! it take a different set of skills when doing this type of shooting and it looks like you are doing it right!! can't wait for part 2!! thanks!

@Military Arms Channel I like Savage rifles. They are nice rifles for the cost. I know the Savage FCP-10K LE rifle was about $829.99 with a scope a while back at my local shop here in California. That is basically a fully upgraded version of the rifle you have in the video :D
I really like this video series, thank you and keep up the great informative, fun videos.
This may be my favorite series you've ever done, I love long range shooting. I'll also be interested to see what you have to say about that Lucid L5. Lucid has become my default for budget optics, I've been thinking about an L5 for a while now.
i just picked one of them up aswell, just picked up a 4-16 ior valdada to top it off cant wait to take this baby out!
Great work in this video man. I really enjoyed it and find that you and I have a very similar methodical approach to shooting. Keep it up!
Would really love to see more on the 1k yard rifle for $1k series Mac!
Thanks Nico.
Good stuff MAC. I'm jealous of that range!
I have the same exact rifle with a similar scope. I work in a gun shop and often tell people, as they're drooling over mine, "I can get you a 1000 yard rifle for about $1000" Sold!
Great series. I can't wait to see what other rifles come up.
The vapor trail at 7:38 is so freaking cool.
Excellent Video!
Mate, very enjoyable and great info... really shows the difference in recoil reduction with the Suppressor on.
Awesome video!! Going to love this series!
This could be an awesome series!
It was Federal Gold Medal Match 175gr.
Awesome first group! 🏆
My Savage 10 FCP-SR will have all rounds touching with basic Winchester 147 grain white box at 100 yards. These are damn fine rifles.
Original American does your fcp-sr have a 5r barrel?
Howa 1500 Varmint in .308
Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 optic
EGW 20 MOA base
Burris Extreme tactical rings
B&C medalist stock
This is my goto rig for the 1000 yard line.
Great shows I enjoy Mac keep it up guys. Long live freedom
Who is MAC...$1000.00? TBunn Sr.
I run the 175's for 1000 yards.
