Honestly, regardless of your thoughts on the dub (I think people can be pretty hard on it), you cannot deny that this theme song is truly incredible. Fun, energetic, but still with that undercurrent of darkness and mystery. I think it fits Yu-Gi-Oh! as a series pretty darn well.
Very true, although the shadow realm business is considered a worse than death I think I'd rather have them just die than sent to the shadow realm. Less imagination needed for just death, the shadow realm is a vague place of torture that's worse than just plain old vanilla death
I always liked how Kaiba was the only one whose eyes weren't all watery in the opening, just because it showed how little fucks he gave about anything in the show.

Gone too soon.. R.I.P Kazuki Takahashi. The only card based TV series I really wanted to watch back then was Yu-Gi-Oh! The lore dealing with ancient Egypt, the amazing battles & seeing what was going to happen to Yugi next. Good times.
At least he didn't go out with a whimper, in fact, he died saving the lives of a family at sea. Ironically, I could see Yugi do something similar. He was just like the character he created. And it just made me appreciate the series even more.
God damn. I remember my dad showing me this show, and this is where my anime journey started. When I didn't even know what anime was. I was around 9 or 11 I wanted to say. Never finished it, but this was a part of my childhood, and this theme still gives me chills to this day.
I feel so blessed that I got to grow up with this show. I remember being in school back in 2002 couldn’t stop thinking about when I’ll be able to watch the next episode haha. my brother and I had the starter decks and would duel all the time with friends. great memories! :) wish I could experience it again.
The music was one of the few things I think they got very much correct in the English dub of the show, overall the combinations of varying degrees of orchestra, techy music (particularly the Kaiba hacker theme with techy), and rock guitar as well as various other instruments and styles gave the duels a feel of their own that wouldn't be out of place in most dramatic tv shows and movies/action movies. bandit keith's theme could easily be the theme for multiple action movie villains that have a similar style to him, the more dramatic battle themes could be used in chase scenes and shit like that, and the various egyptian overtones of several themes still give them the feel that yes this is definitely yu-gi-oh. my guess is they tried to follow the example laid down by yu-yu-hakusho in terms of the score in the first series and then broke away from that standard once they were established, which honestly it DID work.

You can tell the first half of the intro is dark and mysterious, then transitions into something hopeful and triumphant when Yugi's friends and Kaiba make the scene like someone being lost in the dark, only for his friends to free him to get him back into the light. Like how when Atem was trapped in the puzzle, but Yugi set him free and inherited a lot of his friends that helped showed him the way to victory. Joey, Tea and Tristen were the more than just friends to them, they were like family.
