DUMP DAK? Cowboys Rumors On Dak Prescott’s Future And The Benefits To Moving On From Prescott

  • The Dallas Cowboys rumors around Dak Prescott won’t be going away anytime soon. Since the Cowboys aren’t inclined to pay Dak (for now, at least), they’re carrying a massive salary cap hit that makes it harder to build a good roster. As per a Super Chat MVP award for Ecuadorman aog, Cowboys Report host Tom Downey looks at some of the benefits of the Cowboys moving on from Dak Prescott (whether now or later).

    Benefits Of Dumping Dak:
    #1: Saves massive money
#2: Chance to upgrade at QB
#3: “Easier” way to win title
    #4: Different level of excitement
    #5: It’s a decision being made
Dak Prescott’s contract is going to be a massive one, whether the Cowboys pay it or someone else does. If the Cowboys are truly limited in their cash spending, paying the QB $60 million per year causes issues. The Cowboys could pay it if they wanted to, but will they?

Dak Prescott is a top 10 NFL QB. But that doesn’t mean he’s blameless or that the Cowboys team is properly built to win with him.

I don't think Dak's no-trade clause means much. If he doesn't see a future after this season and the right team sniffs Jerruh's underwear a deal could be made. Dak just agrees to drop the clause. There's no NFL rule that forbids him from doing that. So...if the draft comes and goes and there's no trade then Tom is correct that Dallas is just letting it play out and basically wasting a year. Hell... we've wasted 28 already... what's one more? 😅😅😅😅

    • @goldfox177

I mean no trade means something Dak could like no team that comes calling then we are in the same situation we are in now. Once again, you aren't presenting the whole truth.
Signing Prescott to a deal early before the market rises won't benefit the Cowboys. If Prescott continues to believe that he should be the highest-paid quarterback in the league even temporarily, he's going to believe that his salary should rise with the market. Instead of continuing to play under that contract that was signed early before the market rose, he'll hold out for more money, and Jerry Jones will appease him. We saw this with Ezekiel Elliot several years ago. We're seeing this with Cee Dee Lamb right now. We saw this with Zack Martin last year. If we want to benefit from signing a player early, management has to force them to play out their contracts and not just give them raises to meet the market.
Secondly, the no trade clause doesn't have to be the problem that you say it is. The Cowboys could spend all of their top picks on defense this year and get developmental players for the offensive line later in the draft. They could tell Prescott that he's welcome to play out his contract and leave, but he's not going to get to market himself with talented new rookies. Instead, he'll have to market himself in 2024 using the remains of the 2023 offense. He can have the likes of Josh Ball or maybe Earl Bostick Jr protecting his left side. He can throw to the wide receivers that he has, and they are still not that bad. He can have his running game based on Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn. If he still has a great year under those conditions, then maybe he deserves to get a big contract in free agency. If he suddenly looks like a fifteenth to twentieth ranked quarterback, then he's gotten what he deserved.
If he looks at that situation and realizes that the situation is bad for everyone, then he can agree to be traded. If he really thinks that he deserves to receive top three or top five quarterback salary but believes that his new team shouldn't have to give up top five quarterback value in a trade, then he's too much of a prima donna to be worthwhile for anyone. If he's adult enough to realize that his new team should give proper value for a quarterback seen as top five, then the Cowboys can trade him. He'll get a team willing to pay him what he thinks he's worth. The Cowboys will get draft picks to build for the future.
Right now, Prescott is playing chicken with the Cowboys because players have learned the Jerry Jones always blinks. If we reach August and Jerry Jones hasn't blinked, maybe Prescott will accept being traded and accept the fact that a team trading for a top five quarterback will have to give up some real value. Maybe everyone will realize that Prescott will never look as good as Deshaun Watson looked before people saw that he wasn't that good. No one will see Prescott as more than an eighth or ninth best quarterback overall. That means that the Cowboys can't insist on the Watson deal, but they will get a first-round draft pick in 2025 and other picks in 2025 and 2026.
If the Cowboys make that trade in August, they'll have a month to get ready for the regular season with Cooper Rush, Trey Lance, and maybe a draft pick or UDFA quarterback. They'll have young defensive talent. They'll have developmental offensive linemen. They'll have a couple of pretty good wide receivers and tight end, but they'll have horrible running backs. In that scenario, they probably won't have a nine or ten win season. Instead, they'll have a five or six win season. They'll have higher picks throughout the 2025 draft. They'll also have the picks that they received from trading Prescott. If I were GM, I would also trade Zack Martin, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Malik Hooker. That would give the Cowboys a huge number of picks in 2025 and 2026 drafts. They would have enough draft capital to trade up if necessary.
If what they saw in their five-win 2024 season gave them confidence about Trey Lance, then they wouldn't need to use the picks on a quarterback. If Trey Lance looked like a bust, the new coach taking over for McCarthy would have picks to find a new quarterback.
Maybe Prescott will be stubborn and still refuse a trade. In that case, they can just bench him in 2024 and see what Trey Lance brings to the position. Prescott won't be able to showcase himself in 2024 because the Cowboys will already be playing in their post-Prescott future. He can sit on the bench for a year, go to another team in free agency, and the Cowboys will get nothing but a third-round pick. That would be bad for everyone, but at least the Cowboys will be free of Prescott.
At this point, I'm happy with how the Cowboys have handled the situation. Prescott wasn't going to accept a trade when he thought he could manipulate the Cowboys into giving him everything he wanted. We had to have this do-nothing offseason to show that we weren't going to pay big money to a guy who can't win big games. We may not get a huge haul of draft picks in the Prescott trade, but we can do better than a third-round comp pick. A trade in the summer or before the deadline will lead to the Cowboys having a four to six win season, that will give the Cowboys high draft picks. Not giving in to Prescott will tell other players that the Cowboys will no longer pay big money for a guy who can't win big games. Without that bad call in the playoff game against the Packers, Tony Romo would have won a big game. Prescott has never gotten that close. The scores have been close, but the Cowboys really weren't in the past few playoff games.
A Prescott trade in the summer could lead to a five-win season in 2024. That could lead to a draft pick in the four to eight range. With a good pick from the Prescott trade, they might be able to trade up to the three or four range, and that should be good enough to get a franchise quarterback. If they get a good one, then they have a chance to win in the future. That's better than carrying dead cap money five years into the future from having re-signed a guy who never wins the big games. Without all of that money stuck in the quarterback position, they can get better free agents and have a chance to win someday.

For Dak to win everything has to be perfect around him. We let our HOF LT leave, we have no established center, so Dak isn’t going to be better than last year! Just see what we have in Lance and if he sucks move on next year while you build the o-line and add a WR, LB, DB and DE. If Trey Lance pans out you’re ahead of the game, if not, a first round rookie will step into a complete team.

If Dak falters again in the end and hits the market, are we even certain that teams will be lining up to pay him a max $300 million plus contract?!?! 🤷🏻‍♂️ I don’t feel bad for Dak at all, he’s made an enormous fortune while in Dallas overall and in the end, the salary just doesn’t match the play, spend a ton of money now to save 10 tons of money later on

That's a BIG NO!! Shrinks in big games. Wins against lower 2/3 of league, rarely plays well against upper teams and not mentally tough in playoffs. Let's start over at QB.

Or we can do what we did in the 90's and start over but the Jones's are still the owners and they forgot how to do it or they just don't care anymore

The WHOLE team choked 2 of the last 3 seasons. I blame 2022 on the offense alone because holding the 49ers to 19 points at their home is about the best you could hope your defense would do that year. Still, I want Dak next season as QB. OBVIOUSLY if you could have Burrow, Allen, Mahomes, Lamar even Herbert you'd do it. But you can't get those guys. You're smoking drugs if you think any rookie in the draft will be a better QB than Dak in 2024. Dak is the best QB the cowboys have access to and it's not even close.

2024 is going to be a rebuild year. So, get rid of Dak make Cooper the starter and find someone serious for next year.
Going to be a crap season. 🤬
