Listening to Sam Harris is almost always an educational experience. It is not even necessarily about learning new information but perhaps even more importantly, he seems to be a living demonstration of clear, rational, scientific thought.
I find he says things that are pretty obvious and probably already known to those with an open mind (liberals), but would be completely alien to that simpler "faith and feeling" group. There is a world of difference between someone claiming to be able to levitate a piece of paper with psychic power, something which James Randi exposed beautifully, and someone running experiments on the sense of of being stared at. This phenomenon is not at all "paranormal", it is practically a universal experience, and all that's left to do here is to test it scientifically. The presence of James Randi, or lack thereof, is of no consequence and has nothing to do with what Dr. Sheldrake is trying to investigate. Dr. Sheldrake is not trying to beat James Randi's challenge, he's not claiming to be someone with special and supernatural abilities, he's a scientist with an open mind who wants to test it empirically, and actually puts his money where his mouth is by sinking in a bunch of his own cash in maintaining tests like his online telephone-telepathy tests. Come on, Sam, that was kinda weak. Otherwise, great talk. :)
The reason W invaded Iraq was because he is a dangerously ambitious and incredably naive person who was deluded by religious dreams of grandeur. To believe that W invaded Iraq knowing full well that the intelligence was bad is to believe that he intentionally destroyed his presidency. I just can't accept this. It only goes against everything we would normally expect from a politician or even just a person. What presidents generally care about most is their legacy. W actually thought that if he democratized Iraq, the entire Middle East would follow. Then, he could be known as the greatest president ever (in his mind). I mean, the guy did believe his presidency was basically ordained by God so it's not much of a logical jump.
+joe leoni Sam has said that W believed he could democratize the Middle East. I doubt he believes the administration knowingly lied about the intel considering the common perception of the intelligence agencies at the time. None of it is a unique perspective except for what I wrote about human nature and political ambition.
46:56 The invasion of Iraq was never about democracy. If the US wanted to promote democracy they could have started in the US which is considered a "flawed democracy." The US is now supporting an attempted coup in Venezuela to promote democracy by overthrowing the elected president. Just another US crime against humanity.
Not that I think anyone here is equivalent to Harris, but his resume isn't a good indicator of intelligence. Trumps resume is pretty huge. The smartest person in the world could easily be a child dying on a dirt floor in Africa ATM.
Very intelligent man. I enjoy the fact that he admits that he has indeed had some very deep internal experiences. It's a refreshing look from someone of his intellectual caliber.
Cracks me up when Joe throws in conspiracy theories and Sam plays it down and doesn’t crush him for falling for them, Joe has a tendency towards believing bullshit. Thanks Sam!
What Joe is saying about the possibility of psychic phenomena seems to me like a perfect example of failure to use critical thinking. This is exactly why this bullshit is rampant in our society.
That was fantastic :) ...I only watched this because I had been reading stuff about Sheldrake, and while Googling I found a transcript of this video. :)
Just have Sam Harris on every podcast
I'd stop listening..
@@abit9485 Cause you're a meathead
@@drflaggstaff9008 I have an IQ of 149!!
Didn't Sam Harris say this himself?
+joe leoni Sam has said that W believed he could democratize the Middle East. I doubt he believes the administration knowingly lied about the intel considering the common perception of the intelligence agencies at the time. None of it is a unique perspective except for what I wrote about human nature and political ambition.
One of the few sensible people in the comments on this issue. Bravo!
46:56 The invasion of Iraq was never about democracy. If the US wanted to promote democracy they could have started in the US which is considered a "flawed democracy." The US is now supporting an attempted coup in Venezuela to promote democracy by overthrowing the elected president. Just another US crime against humanity.
My dream used to be seeing Christopher Hitchens on the JRE. Sam Harris is a worthy substitute.
ben stiller should be sam harris for halloween
R lol
Sam Harris is on a different level. Check his resume against your own before you claim to be his equal intellectually
megarudyray1 who's claiming that
Not that I think anyone here is equivalent to Harris, but his resume isn't a good indicator of intelligence. Trumps resume is pretty huge. The smartest person in the world could easily be a child dying on a dirt floor in Africa ATM.
Jay Ups you think intelligence is inherited ?
@@abit9485 Sam Harris is the total opposite of ignorant
He dropped out of physics like me, so that's one reason to identify with him.
1:33:20 - It’s amazing these two are the same species.
31:15 Boy, has this changed..
Thanks Sam!
Joe has come a long way from not saying dumb shit in front of Sam.
What Joe is saying about the possibility of psychic phenomena seems to me like a perfect example of failure to use critical thinking. This is exactly why this bullshit is rampant in our society.
hes a stoner he cant help it
Deathinmusic Yeah it's painfully obvious Joe has never grokked the scientific method.
Who else thinks that when Joe stretches his arm forward at 1:30:05 he is setting the little white lucky cat in motion?
That was fantastic :) ...I only watched this because I had been reading stuff about Sheldrake, and while Googling I found a transcript of this video. This has just conretized what I already thought... Sheldrake's research should be approached with a healthy dose of skepticism ...I only meant to listen to the stuff about Sheldrake but ended watching the whole show.
Can you please share the link to the transcript?
Brilliant men, brilliant conversation. 3
Joes first FULLY BALD podcast!!!!
GET DANIEL DENNETT ON THE SHOW!!!
Anybody who hasn’t heard any of Waking Up With Sam Harris, begin
Is this an official JR channel?
No! You didn't finish the conversation about Derren Brown! Have him on the show please, that would be a fascinating talk :)
Bill Burr, Kevin Smith, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Tommy Chong were all highlights of this podcast for me. I still however think this one is the best of all. Anybody have a recommended one that I may have missed?
Really interesting see Sam get into a flow of CONVERSATION with someone not a flow of ARGUMENT with someone
Joe... if you're listening. Way to stay on point!
Cringed so hard when Joe left and Redman had to talk to Sam
Austin Huntsman I was expecting worse lol so Sam, ever try a flashlight backwards and without the case? lol
I'm sure Sam did, too.
