Thanks so much for this tutorial! I fixed my kids' ipad screen and saved a whole lot of money (really just saved their boredom because I wasn't going to buy a new one!).
When the Screen is cracked like this Placing shipping tape on the screen prior to removal should help in reducing the shards of glass. Very thorough and nicely produced video.
I checked the comments to write this myself. I already put box tape on it to keep my daughter from cutting herself while waiting for the replacement screen and to keep pieces of glass from falling off in the mean time. I'm in autobody, and they have what's called collision wrap, which is basically giant sheets of flexible tape.
I’ve seen people use heated opening pads. I used my 3D printer heated bed with silicone pad. I set the temperature to 70 degrees and heated the ipad 6g for about 10-15 minutes. Worked like a charm! (Screen up) Printer is an Ender 3 Max.

@@UbergeeksBiz Just wanted to ask, have you ever experienced an issue with one of the the ribbon cables for the new digitizer not “snapping” into place? I ended up having to put some electrical tape behind it to keep it pressed onto the connector. Unfortunately the screen is having intermittent problem with responding to touch, and I’m thinking the ribbon cable issue is related to this.
Two things that he didn't mention that is extremely helpful for this repair is. 1. If you dropped your iPad you probably left a dent somewhere so try and smooth it out for new glass. 2. Put a sheet of paper between the lcd and broken screen so you dont drop any pieces on screen.

I know this video is about a year old, but a customer pointed me to it and I would like to correct a few things for anyone still watching and thinking about repairing it on their own. 1. ALWAYS use safety goggles. Even if your screen isn't that "spidered" it only takes 1 shard of glass 1 mm across to end your sight permanently in that eye. ALWAYS use an ESD (electrostatic discharge) wrist guard (once you have glass removed and unit is opened up in this case) and NEVER perform this repair with carpet underneath you. 2. NEVER use a hair dryer, always use an adjustable hot air gun. Decent ones start at $50, and better ones are 75-100. 3. NEVER use a metal pry tool like this guy did. They are for experienced people that know EXACTLY where to pry, and where not to. Buy a cheap pack of playing cards and use those to slide under instead after using a small flat (and dull) xacto blade to lift up the edge. If you feel abnormal resistance, then you likely are not properly underneath the adhesive, or it is not hot enough. Mark the spot with a marker and start somewhere else, or reheat and try again. Remember that the adhesive strips are typically 1/8th of an inch wide thereabouts in most places, but there are places that are smaller. For novices, watch this video and mark with a permanent marker where the cables are at so you remember, it's much easier. Also, if you happen to slide the card in too far and you can see it beyond the inner rim of the digitizer, you are less likely to permanently scratch the LCD screen. (Maybe some adhesive residue you have to GENTLY clean off, but that's about it.) 4. When you are dealing with the "gunk" under the screw holes of the LCD, you can also use the hot air gun to release them, just remember to wiggle the hot air gun back and forth while you GENTLY lift on the LCD near the corner so you don't damage the LCD corner with heat or burn your fingers. If it's too hot through your gloves, then it's too hot for the LCD. 5. If you ordered a cheap replacement screen off Amazon and your sensor panels around the viewable glass area are exposed and there isn't already a pad or buffer on top of it, send it back. DO NOT try to cover it yourself. It is VERY easy to damage these sensors, and even the oils from your fingers can do it, or can corrode them later on. (You should be wearing pierce and heat resistant gloves anyway.) 6. Also, if adhesive is NOT preinstalled, send it back, unless you are familiar with how to use very thin pieces of adhesive, this is VERY difficult for a novice or the inexperienced to do correctly. 7. NEVER use Loctite, or any other Permanent type adhesive substance. It guarantees you will never be able to do a repair the same way again. At least not easily. 8. To clean the edges of the chassis where the old adhesive was, you may (CAREFULLY) use a small flat razor xacto blade (preferably dull) to scrape adhesive. You may also dip the blade into 99% isopropyl alcohol first to help with the removal. DO NOT use anything other than 99%. It does not evaporate and leaves residue and contaminants behind and your new adhesive will not adhere as well. 9. ALWAYS take a can of air and (holding the can of air as upright normal as possible so you don't spray liquid) blow off the LCD screen and inside of the Digitizer before you place it down for testing AND AGAIN before final adhering. 10. When you test the new digitizer, also test your home button functionality. The touch will not be exactly functional as the sensors will still be a bit wonkey because the glass isn't perfectly flat. As long as you can touch something and it responds, cool, it works. 11. And this one should arguably be the first... If you are not comfortable AT ALL with ANY of this repair, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT. Yes, by getting the tools and digitizer yourself you might save 50 or 60 bucks vs. taking it to a repair shop, plus you now have proper tools for another job in the future. But is it really worth that? If you are going to do a "one and done" repair, it's really not. If you have no interest in doing any other types of repairs, or aren't comfortable with electronic repairs, then just pay the extra and let a professional do it. Find one that has good reviews and can explain the process in depth to you prior to selecting one. Plus, whether doing it yourself OR using a professional 3rd party repair service, you are indirectly supporting the right to repair movement, and telling Apple and other big companies to go take a hike with their BS. Hope that all helps. Otherwise, this is a semi-decent video, and if nothing else explains the common things that inexperienced people wouldn't necessarily be aware of. Edit: Original 4 and 6 were removed due to this being a model that does not have the requirement to slide a pick under the battery connection. Wish apple would make up their freaking minds.
One other thing I forgot to mention.... If your glass is not completely shattered, and don't want to waste a bunch of time like this guy did, try using shipping tape to place over the screen to prevent the glass from cracking further. Use the HIGHEST quality shipping tape you can find. Like 8-10 dollar a roll stuff. It might take you some time to cover all the cracks, but will save you more time in the long run usually if you are careful and patient when removing the adhesive.
So what kind of glue can people use to adhere the home button back to the new digitizer?? If you’re going to say what not to use, please provide info on what can be used.
Make sure you follow his steps and don't assume anything as I did. The ribbon cable adhesive for the digitizer must be applied before attaching it to the mainboard. I tried attaching after, didn't go flush. I attempted to peel it back off to reapply and the cable ripped at the bend. Very fragile. the adhesive I'm referring to is the one with tan prep paper with green lettering.
Great video, best instructions I’ve seen so far. Just one question, what is the white tape you used to cover up the sensors? Does double sided adhesive work or is it too thick?
@@UbergeeksBiz thanks, so is it similar thickness to the tape around the outer edge? My replacement kit came with a roll of double sided tape, maybe 1.5mm thick. Hoping to get it right the first time I seal it up. Really appreciate the response!
I replaced my screen and neither the original nor the replacement home button works 😢 - still i'm happy enough, the iPad belongs to my 3 year old and i can still operate with an 'on screen home button'. Thanks loads for the tutorial, I would've been clueless without it!
Good vid you spent a long time showing the cracked screen removal with out time lapse but didn't want to spend one moment showing how the double sided tape goes ( I mean it's easy but still )
Good video. I followed the instructions and the key pad doesn’t work properly. I brought it to a repair shop who said since it is messed up it is no good. I have since learned that the “tape” that should be used is made for electronics. Can I still use the replacement screen and how do I make it work. Signed… perplexed
Do you have a recommendation as to where to purchase a reliable new screen (preferably with the tools too)? Great video. I have done some iPhones before. This’ll be my first iPad.
I saw you put on double sided tape to cover the sensor but did not see you remove the orange tape to expose the top side of sticky tape. Did I just miss it or did you not show it. Also watched another video you made for 8th gen A2428 screen. That is the one I am working on now. In that video you did not show installing tape to cover the sensor. Does the A2428 sensor not need the tape to prevent ghosting? I am confused . Help please. Thank you
Hello, I fixed my screen just like you said in the video, and everything was great, but I have a small problem. In one part of the screen there is an area, that doesn’t react anymore, it’s like a small “bar” in the middle that doesn’t react like a dead line. Do you know what to do?
Try remove and install the digitizer to make sure connector is seated properly. If that didn’t work, you have have a bad digitizer screen. Get another new screen. Test the screen first before putting the double sided tape.
good video with all the details. For me the homebuttons has mostly been the problem. the sad thing is if you replace the homebutton tuch id will not work. wish apple did not do that
@Quinn Fogarty Like 1 hour or so I guess. I messed around a bit due to the home button. Switching it out wasn't a problem, but the thing that seats it was a bit loose on mine and I couldn't make it fit the new screen assembly well. I used some E6000 glue and random plastic bits to keep it from wiggling too much. ID still works fine to this day.
You said you were trying to push the home button plug back in, how did it come out? I didn’t see you remove it, that’s about the only thing that is confusing, thanks you , John
Hi... Great video. I followed every step, super easy! I discovered i need a new home button, so im currently waiting for it in the mail. Is it safe to test the ipad before i get the new home button? I havent tried turning it on because im affraid something might go wrong without the homebutton.
the ipad i fixed was dead when i first started taking off the broken screen and stuff. and i put the LCD back on to test it the power button wasnt making the dead battery icon pop. would an over night charge help or did something happen to the LCD ? all the cables for both the LCD and digitizer are intact
Thanks a lot for uploading this video, I just replaced the cracked screen on my iPad. I just paused and followed your instructions carefully, and everything works great!
10:10 I would think the putty like material placed in the corners with the screws is to stabilize and reduce shock given these are the locations joining the screen and case.
How do you stop the screen pinching the cables??? I've tried this 3 times and it works fine until I close the screen then the touch is faulty. Ribbon cables being pinched by screen
Hi UberGeeks when you applied the first lot of tape to help with the sensor, when you put the final double sided tape on at the end will the tapes overlap each other or will they miss each other ?
@@Pajeroexploring4x4 Yea, if the bracket is not holding the home button from behind. When you press, the home button will slid back in and feel wobbly.
If you follow the tutorial closely, yes. Two more things I would recommend are glass/cut resistant gloves, and masking tape to put on top of the broken glass. Edit- It is also good to have a vacuum cleaner on hand so you can vacuum up all the tiny glass bits, and make sure you have all the tools! (e.g. suction cup, pry tool, safety gear). If you don't have a heat gun or heat station, a hairdryer will work (that's what I used), it just might take a little bit more time.
Its tricky, a heat gun or hair dryer, patience working a thin metal or plastic thing around the edge. don't force it , took me months of practice to get screens off unbroken
I have a question: There is a stripe on my display that does not work at all. Do you think it's enough to replace the glass (as shown in the video) or is the LCD panel itself broken and needs to be renewed?
@@UbergeeksBiz I may have explained it not correctly. It's not a visual stripe (like a black bar), but a stripe which is not touch responsive / can not detect touches 🤔
@@UbergeeksBiz thank you sir I bought a cracked ipad to fix as my first flip and i almost thought I was going to go negative on my first time thank you so much for quick answer
Fabulous video! Clear, concise and too the point! Helped me out a treat! Greetings from Uk, Christmas Eve 2020 and a massive thank you! Sent you a cup of coffee as requested!
Great video, after replacement the screen kinda lifts up on the left side (where the cables on the digitizer are). I used the double sided tape bc i thought it would be strong and it would hold it but it still lifts up :( any ideas?
Not in order but I would Inspect iPad for any bents, or a bad battery pack like extreme bulging. Make sure all cables are tucked in and not on the edge of the iPad, remove old adhesive completely around the edge and prep with alcohol. test fit the screen with out adhesive. If everything checks out then proceed to use adhesive and put everything together. Screen over the brim? Then your adhesive is thick
Hi, I have taken my iPad apart, and was just trying to check that it was still working before I bought the replacement digitiser. When I plug the home button and lcd in the iPad will not boot. Should it boot without a digitiser attached? And is there anyway other then looking at the lcd to tell if it will boot?
iPad LCD should display without screen digitizer installed. As long as LCD and battery installed properly, you will get display on the screen. Screen digitizer is only for your finger to touch. Hope this helps. Good luck.
I followed the directions step by step. When it came to the part to reattach the lcd cover. It sparked when I was screwing the lid on. I completed the rest of the steps but now my screen won’t turn back on. Any idea what happened?
I noticed you didn’t take the battery screw out. I didn’t either. I replaced everything but now I have a black screen, no battery icon. Could I have over heated the LCD or could it have been the battery?
@@UbergeeksBiz yes thank you, I did that but I also noticed one of sensors wasn’t in all the way, working great now. It was the plate with the 3 tiny screws. A few areas the touch screen does t work but I’m still happy
@@zang2349 You want to use original home button. If you use the replacement 3rd party home button, your iPad will not have Touch ID. So, keep your original home button.
Nice video bro but couldnt understand why removing the lcd was necessary? Im preparing to change a screen next week and every step i dont need to do is good :)
Hey, +UberGeeks, are you sure it's a good idea for me to use Loctite Super Glue to glue in the home button like that? What if I ever need to repair the iPad again and remove the home button glued with super glue? Wouldn't that maximize the chances of ruining the home button when trying to remove it?
Hi. If you look carefully, apple applied some sort of white glue to hold the home button bracket. I've tried using just double sided tape, but after a while, especially with kids press real hard, the bracket will just come off. A tiny Loctite glue holds pretty good. If next time to replace the screen again, it can be easily scrap off. Hope this helps.
I think the black goo in all four corners is for the apple employees to tell if it's been opened before because for those with apple care coverage, it would void the warranty.
I have a new lcd screen and a new frontscreen but the screen snows? I dont understand? Also my a1954 has black parts left and right next tothe camera, but i donot see them on all videos of screen replacements not even on ifixit? How?
@@shufflephunk Sorry to hear that. If you are still getting it, more likely the logic board is the issue. Where the video chipset that display is bad. Can't replace or change.
Got it put back together and when I plug it in all I get is a black line down the middle of the white screen. Perhaps something happened with the lcd screen?
Yeah. It was fine before removing it except for the shattered screen on top. There was a small spark when plugging it back in. How do you keep it from getting fried with the battery still in? Instructions say to remove the battery but it’s glued in or something. I noticed you didn’t take the battery out either. Ugh. Hopefully it’s just the the lcd. I ordered a new one so we get to go through this process again lol. Still cheaper than buying a new iPad. It should be easier without dealing with glass shards.
@@rachaelb9164 If you see sparks, that's very dangerous. Please take safety measure. About the battery, some people use a plastic to separate the connector. Not necessary to remove the battery entirely.

It might take you some time to cover all the cracks, but will save you more time in the long run usually if you are careful and patient when removing the adhesive.
Internet police officer Brian, you don't need to correct him - you didn't seem to even see or hear his warning about safety glasses.
I’m sorry to hear that. Thanks for the comment to helping others.
Had the exact same problem, very important to get it nice and flat
Thanks so much for this video! I have to replace the screen of my iPad A1893. I’m going to start it Tuesday when all of my supplies get here 😃
Glad it helped!
Great video, best instructions I’ve seen so far. Just one question, what is the white tape you used to cover up the sensors? Does double sided adhesive work or is it too thick?
Hi. I use double sided adhesive tape that I got. No, it is not too thick for that. It does not touch the LCD after I install the digitizer screen.
Sorry to hear about the home button. Glad you the video helped.
You can put tape on the broken glass, so you dont have to pick one by one
Yes. Thanks ! Also you can use tape to tape the finger print away.
UberGeeks Mr.CSI 😉😂
Very true

It’s not a bad digitizer it’s the connection needs to be cleaned
good video with all the details. For me the homebuttons has mostly been the problem. the sad thing is if you replace the homebutton tuch id will not work. wish apple did not do that
Yes, home button flex cable is challenging. Just take time and be very careful. Glad you liked the video.
I damaged the home button cable taking it off , I sure hope the new one works , installing it now
Great video! I have a 5th gen A1822. Do I still need to cover the sensors on that screen model?
I'm glad it helped. Yes, I would still cover the back sensor
Had this in a few days back, here to learn how..I tend to tape up the glass but I can see it might not always be the best thing.....
Good luck
Muchas gracias, he seguido tu video varias veces. Greetings from Mexico.
Thanks, fixed my ipad, wasn't hard at all.
Glad it helped !
@@calamariaxo for the tape at 16:24 did you use regular or double sided tape

Can normal electrician tape work with covering the sensor?
That would work. But normal electrician tape is slightly thicker. Not recommend

What kind of tape can you use to cover the sensor part

Did you really cut the digitizer flex with scissors? Also no disconnect of the battery?
Yes. I really did cut the flex cable off a cracked digitizer. Any benefit of keeping them ? Unless you know a way of fixing broken digitizer glass.
@@UbergeeksBiz I know u can cause a short by doing that especially when you don’t disconnect the battery you risk looking the data as well

You said you were trying to push the home button plug back in, how did it come out? I didn’t see you remove it, that’s about the only thing that is confusing, thanks you , John
It went well. Was able to keep the original home button
Hi... Great video. I followed every step, super easy! I discovered i need a new home button, so im currently waiting for it in the mail. Is it safe to test the ipad before i get the new home button? I havent tried turning it on because im affraid something might go wrong without the homebutton.
iPad can be turned on without home button
Can you use a black screen instead of white??
Yes you can.
Would you be able to use b7000 glue for the home button? And what was that duster spray?
Yes. Duster to spray off dust

No. Unfortunately each iPad model screen are different. You have to use exact same screen.

Tysm for your help sir
Really informative video! However I did loose a screw that holds the plate on the ribbon connectors so is there any way to get replacements for them?
Missing one screw is fine. You still have two other screws that hold.
What’s the temperature of the heating gun? I have a heating gun but it’s made to remove paint from wood
I don't know what's the actual temperature. Just not extreme heat till it burns your hand. That should be fine.
if it does burn your hand keep it at a safe distance and you should be fine :)
Can you use hair dryer if you don't have a heat gun?

the ipad i fixed was dead when i first started taking off the broken screen and stuff. and i put the LCD back on to test it the power button wasnt making the dead battery icon pop. would an over night charge help or did something happen to the LCD ? all the cables for both the LCD and digitizer are intact
Probably takes 5-8 hours will fully charge the iPad.
I had the same thing happen, one of the sensors wasn’t plugged in correctly for me. It was the one with the plate with the 3 tiny screws
Thanks a lot for uploading this video, I just replaced the cracked screen on my iPad. I just paused and followed your instructions carefully, and everything works great!
You are welcome. Glad the video helped.
I am having the same issue
This is a great video. Thank you for you help. Have a great day.
Glad it was helpful!
Question! For the last step to apply the screen on - Do I need to heat it back up to melt the glue and make it stick?
No, Please do not do that.
on the edge of the lcd is some stuff and i removed that can i still repair it
Yes. The lcd black adhesive glue ?
Hi UberGeeks when you applied the first lot of tape to help with the sensor, when you put the final double sided tape on at the end will the tapes overlap each other or will they miss each other ?
No overlap. It will close just right.
UberGeeks nice one buddy
Thank you so much I have done my ipad although the only thing is that the home button is a little wobbly is that normal?
The bracket that holds home button, did you use adhesive gel glue to glue it ?
@@UbergeeksBiz no
But thanks ill try that next time
@@Pajeroexploring4x4 Yea, if the bracket is not holding the home button from behind. When you press, the home button will slid back in and feel wobbly.

Hallo geht das Ipad air LCD auch auf ipad 6?
Is this doable for someone who has no prior experience with this? Is it easy to mess something up so the iPad becomes unusable?
If you follow the tutorial closely, yes. Two more things I would recommend are glass/cut resistant gloves, and masking tape to put on top of the broken glass.
Edit- It is also good to have a vacuum cleaner on hand so you can vacuum up all the tiny glass bits, and make sure you have all the tools! (e.g. suction cup, pry tool, safety gear). If you don't have a heat gun or heat station, a hairdryer will work (that's what I used), it just might take a little bit more time.
Thank you for your comment.
If you are handyman, this repair should not be difficult. For someone has no experience, I would say not that easy.
thanks it worked for me.
but the cable of the screen gave me a hard time because it needs to be slide under the lcd
I'm glad it worked. Thanks for the comment.
Do you think I would have to replace my ipad screen just because half a side is popping out a little?
I think you have a bad battery. Maybe you have a swollen battery.
Great video! May I ask how to remove the iPad screen without breaking it?
I don’t believe you can but again you can just get a replacement for $20
Its tricky, a heat gun or hair dryer, patience working a thin metal or plastic thing around the edge. don't force it , took me months of practice to get screens off unbroken
I have a question: There is a stripe on my display that does not work at all. Do you think it's enough to replace the glass (as shown in the video) or is the LCD panel itself broken and needs to be renewed?
If it is display stripe, you need to change LCD screen.
@@UbergeeksBiz I may have explained it not correctly. It's not a visual stripe (like a black bar), but a stripe which is not touch responsive / can not detect touches 🤔
Awesome how to video but why the tape? The new screens come with adhesive on them
The screen tape is not strong. After a while, the screen will not stick
Do you know if a hair dryer on heat mode instead of a heat gun will be enough ?
Yes. Just gotta heat up longer

Double sided adhesive tape.

I did everything but the touch screen isn’t working (The LED screen is turning on and fine), I haven’t sealed it shut yet, what can I do to fix it?
Spot on. Bryan explained it well. Waffle, you might want tuck in the side cable and maybe use this Adhesive Red Tape: amzn.to/2CGZsu3
I’m trying to change the scream I’ve got to taking out the screws but only 1 will come out, how can I get the other 3 out?

Hi,
I have taken my iPad apart, and was just trying to check that it was still working before I bought the replacement digitiser.
Good luck.
Thanks. I’ll have to have a deeper look and see why it is not displaying.

I noticed you didn’t take the battery screw out. I didn’t either. I replaced everything but now I have a black screen, no battery icon. Could I have over heated the LCD or could it have been the battery?

Agreed

It sounds like the LCD went bad.
