Please be careful when the weather is like that. If you look up at the mountains and see rain clouds there is a risk of flash floods. Also, swimming in the ocean, especially at that beach, in muddy water equals a higher risk of sharks. My BIL friend was bit by a shark there in 1993. You really seem to enjoy the island and that is always great.

Fun to watch! Went on this road during my honeymoon in 2006. I tried to tell my husband we need to stop along way to look at things! He’s like “no, let’s just get to Hana” since it’s called road to Hana he thought Hana is the goal and destination so he just wanted to focus on that. When we got to Hana there wasn’t much there. lol. I tried to tell him it’s the journey that is the experience! We laugh about it. Now through your video I get to see what we missed! 😅 Good life lesson/metaphor for this journey called life!

Hey guys. This Hawaii vlog series has been amazing and you guys are capturing the beauty of Hawaii (rain or shine) perfectly. I’m always drawn to water so to see all the ocean and waterfalls really speaks to me. And even tho it wasn’t the best weather you guys made the best of it and didn’t let it slow you down. Maui is very high on our list so I’m enjoying a sneak peek of what we can look forward to. As for the shrimp chips, they are definitely an acquired taste but when you’re in Hawaii it’s a must to buy a bag and give it a go. Hope you guys are doing well and staying safe. God bless you both.

I wanted to do road to hana so bad but
    1. They just had a landslide from a bad storm
    2. I was solo so didnt feel it was safe
    3. I did the drive to haleakala and felt nauseous on that so i couldnt do even more turns and twists lol
Do yall miss it because i have island blues. Got 4 islands left to see, baby!!!

Aw, thanks man! We were there the first week of December which is technically the "rainy season", but even the locals said it's not typically as rainy as it was during our visit. 😭 It was still a great time, but we definitely plan to make it back to Maui to make up for all of the things that we didn't get to do because of the bad weather!

I'm so bummed you guys didn't get to finish the hike to Waimoku Falls! My wife and I spent 8 days in Maui in June, five doing the resort thing in Kapalua (The Montage, highly recommend btw) and the last three at a gorgeous little eco resort on the Road to Hana. The hike through the bamboo forest up to Waimoku Falls was by far our favourite part of the The Road to Hana. You guys have to finish that hike if and when you end up back there!
Oh, and as for the road, we left it a little too late to turn around on our first night and ended up driving the whole way back in the pitch black and torrential rainstorm! It was absolutely terrifying, especially since we were in the opposite of a Jeep, a little two seater Mercedes convertible. lol.

Just got back from Maui, June 2023. Barely survived Road to Hana. On way there, multiple dump trucks ran us off road. We had to pull into rock wall damaging our rental car. If we didn't pull in our mirror, it would have been ripped off. Truck drivers could care less and didn't stop or slow down. On way back two locals passed multiple cars, running on coming traffic off road. We pulled clear across road to avoid collision. Never again will we go. It was way too risky, not enjoyable at all.

Love this!! I’ll be there in two months!!! Question for ya, since I think you’ll have a great answer: what shoes do you recommend? With the hiking, mud, water, and rocks, do you have a type you prefer to wear??
Thanks!! And thanks for all your hard work doing these vids! ♥️

    • @AdventuresofMattandNat
      @AdventuresofMattandNat  2 года назад

Heyyy!! Thanks so much for watching! Ahh… So exciting! A great shoe that I find works for all of those activities is the Vibram FiveFingers. They offer great support, grip, and foot protection… But they’re as ugly as it gets! Lol… That said, I’ve opted for Teva Sandals for a lot of my water/outdoor activities. I have the Original Universals (amzn.to/3vMpFBU) but they’re not the best for water hiking, so I would recommend the Terra FI 5’s or the Hurricane XLT 2’s if you decide to go the sandal route. Other options that we’ve heard great things about but don’t have first hand experience is the Crocs LiteRide Pacer’s, the Astral Loyak’s, and the Keen Astoria West (hybrid shoe/sandal)
I hope this helps! Sorry for such a long reply! Lol -Matt

My wife and I were in Hawaii in June and, among other things, we did the Road to Hana. We also spent 2 nights in Hana, which is definitely the way to go because it gives you more time to explore heading each way, plus a full day in between for hiking. Along the way, we saw lots of waterfalls, scenic views, stopped at Waiʻānapanapa State Park (we had reservations for mid-afternoon), hiked the Pipiwai Trail, etc. I recognized almost every frame of scenery of your video. It's a great drive and +1 for the Gypsy guide, if you don't mind a few words routinely mispronounced. 🙂
My wife and I did not think the road was too twisty, but we drive a lot in the nearby Sierra Nevada and have lots of experience with roads this twisty or worse, paved and unpaved and sometimes on the edge of a precipice. However, I can see how this road might intimidate some people.
It's too bad you didn't have time to go all the way to the end of the Pipiwai to see 400-foot-tall Waimoku Falls. It's a great hike, but I wasn't prepared for the humidity. I am used to hiking in places like Yosemite in temperatures up to about 90°F, but with the humidity in the 25% to 50% range. When I hiked the Pipiwai, it was about 85°F and the humidity was about 90% and it sapped my energy far faster than I expected (being 63 didn't help either). The stats for the trail (2 miles in/2 miles out/700-ft elevation gain) make it seem easy, but I actually found it to be as or more difficult than Yosemite's Mist Trail/John Muir Trail semi-loop to the top of Nevada Fall (4 miles in/4 miles out/2000-ft elevation gain), which I last did in May 2019. Fortunately, I had brought proper hiking boots and a pair of hiking sticks.
Anyway, great video and you clearly had a good time.

Oh wow! Good to know! When we entered the park, the ranger told us that we had to be out by 5pm because the gates closed. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for sharing that tough! Wish we’d known when we were there! Lol

Loved the road to Hana. We still have a jar of the black sand. Not sure it was in season, but we were amazed by the grapefruit size avocados that we saw all along the roadway. Even though it's 64 miles, it took us about 3 hours to drive it.

That's awesome! We didn't get to experience the oversized avocados! And yes... the 64 miles (oneway) is deceiving! It took us from 8am-5pm (with stops) then another 2.5-3 hours of driving to get back to our hotel down in Wailea-Makena! It definitely makes for a long day! Lol... Thanks so much for watching!
