Lisa Block 0 seconds ago My sister is treating us (she and I) to a trip to Maui this October 2023. We are both in our 60s, and I recently had open heart surgery for a valve replacement. I found your video very beautiful, and informative. I would love to give the Road to Hana a shot...hoping I can do at least parts of it. Mahalo!
Excellent video, but you left out 2 of my favorite spots. Hamoa is one of my favorite beaches on the planet, and Waikoa Pond (Venus Pool) shouldn't be missed.
Excellent video, I did the road to Hana last February 😀and we did miss some things and we did have that app you suggested, you guys did a very good job on how to really do this trip while in Maui, a jeep is a must , we had some Ford sub, it wasn't a good rental, we're going back after summer ,I love that GG place . 👍
Great Video as everyone has said. i am for sure going to do the pipiwai trail....back in 2013 it was closed --- what would you suggest for a 1 night trip to hit, to hit all your spots (and probably more). We are staying west maui, but could do the road to hana on last 2 days. Drive road to hana and stay one night - drive to airport - our flight is at 9:58pm.
As a local who’s lived in Maui for over 20 years I have to say this is a very good video. It hits the main highlights of the road to Hana. I also agree with the final recommendation of spending the night in Hana is the best way to do it, but if you cannot these are the things you should do on a one day trip.
I am from Texas so for all Texans out there REMEMBER REMEMBER that this road is will take HOURS to drive. There are a lot of sharp turns and it seemed like forever for me when I drove this road to reach Hana. I'd recommend at least two days to drive this beast! We started at 6AM and didn't get home until 9PM (stores were closed way before then) and I felt like I missed a lot of good opportunities. This road is really really long so I suggest you break it up if you want to get the full experience. Garden of Eden has peacocks running around so check that out it was fun if you love peacocks, my wife did.
Great to know, thank you! We are spending our 10th wedding anniversary in Kauai, Oahu then Maui. I wanted to make sure we didn’t miss other things in Maui but this road seems so incredible. Do you recommend staying in Hana or elsewhere on Maui? Trying to plan for fall. Thanks.
Man, this is the BEST video of The Road to Hana by far. We did fine and had a great time in one day, wished I know about that app. One suggestion, plan to head out early like 5am and began your trip back early because it get dark really quick (you'll drive much slower compare to driving during day time) and it won't be fun nor safe driving in the dark. I would head back out 4:00 or 4:30pm. Cheers!
I know you're getting a lot of positive comments and I'm not going to blow that, BUT, there are a few other free apps for the Hana guide vs the Gypsy - and spending an hour at the Garden of Eden where there's way more on the road, not the best. Also, 2 nights in Hana and 4 hours on the Pipiwai trail, when you're only there for a week is a bit much. There's SO much more to Maui than Hana. Anyway, just my 2 cents and thanks for putting this together.
That sunscreen doesn't show up on their website anymore. Aloha EVERYONE, please only buy and use *reef safe* sunscreens when you are on islands and in waterways, watersheds, and oceans and seas. Mahalo
This is a great video and tips... I've been to Maui 4 times so just a few add-on's... I agree to def stay 1-2 nights in Hana { Hana Maui Resort by Hyatt } is nice too... the cottages on the coast are in a truly "breath-taking" location... !!! // Tip - for all of Maui; get heavy duty flexible rubber soled water-shoes !!! { Maui has what locals call "evil thorns" !!! They are even on the pristine sand beaches !!! // Tip - Re: "Mama's Fish House" - great place, more formal but you need reservations MONTHS in advance !!! -- Paia Fish Market on the drive back is also a great stop and less formal, killer fish burgers w coleslaw on the bun !!! // Tip - bring "TP" in your car... lol ( not many places to pee or worse ) // Waianapanapa State Park; you need a reservation and it gives you a 2-3 hour window to be there so that can be tricky too.... // k... Mahalo ( thank you ) - 🙂
Red sand beach is a very dangerous place. As a long time Maui resident I've seen multiple deaths and injuries here...to the point that now they charge people for helicopter rescues, of which there are 3-5 each year here. A few months ago a visitor slipped and fell of the trail a hundred feet to the ocean and died. Please take this stop off of your video - Mahalo and Aloha
I suggest the Shaka Guide app over the Gypsy Guide app. I would also suggest you bring a way to connect your phone to your JEEP (yes, I 100% agree with the Jeep suggestion. I'm not a fan of them and would never buy one, but on Maui, a topless Jeep is A MUST!) as most rentals do not have Bluetooth. I bought an auxiliary cord that connects to my phone Bluetooth.
Excellent video! Thank you very much for shooting this video, for the exceptional advice and narration, and for your obvious love of Maui and "the road to Hana"!
I loved the road to Hana! My favorite was the bamboo forest. There's something magical about it. We almost went twice on our trip we loved it so much! Wish we had. Great video!
Awesome video!! I have been to Maui many times and never thought of really enjoying Hana by spending the night there, such a great suggestion!! Mahalo nui loa for a great job!!
Yes 1000% - that was the one stop that I felt the worst about leaving off my top 5! Definitely spend time in Ke'Anae and get some of that amazing banana bread!
Wish I saw this video earlier.. we just went yesterday and only stopped twice. It was a beautiful drive, just long & everyone kept complaining & arguing... yes I’m talking about my own family next time I’ll just go by myself LOL
Just to add a little bit more...cooler with food & drink, wet wipes, and something to pee in because there are absolutely no restrooms anywhere. It is all natural!
to camp there it has always (for many years) been required to get a permit in advance I'm curious about the new policy for stopping by though. I didn't stop at Wainapanapa the last few day trips I made out to Hana (to visit a friend), in August and September 2020, while we were closed to visitors from overseas. Haven't gone by Wainapanapa in a few years. (Live on north shore, between Paia and Kaenae), but camped there several nights in a row on a few different occasions (other trips out, camped in Kipahulu). Since we reopened to visitors and after covid-19 became a thing, apparently they are adjusting policies and protocils to monitor volume of people at any one time. I'm curious now, but don't plan on taking the drive anytime soon. It was HEAVEN driving out there with *no traffic* in August last year and in early September. Never thought I'd do multiple day trips out and back like that. Always went out to camp for several days. It was nice to go hit red sand beach and visit with my friend and eat and head back, and have time to stop and take quick dips (when the water wasn't running too high from recent rains), at some of the pools along the way, and get back on the road and make such amazing time and be home for dinner.
I just got back from Hawaii back in October the road to hana was very nice the view was amazing. The roads are very scary tho they are very narrow and if you meet a car coming down it can get scary but I had a amazing time I will be going back!!
Road to Hana is a nightmare. 5 hours up, 5 hours back, not much to see when you get there. One of the most deadliest roads in USA. Just last week, a car carrying 2 women slide off road. Both died. Pass on this excursion folks.
wow, thank you! I have been going to Hana since 1986. It's always been the "doing it in one day" thing. Now, I can plan something other than sitting in a vehicle for 10hours.
Touching on one relevant thing here- keep in mind that currently Haleakala closes at 5pm local time. If you plan on doing Pipiwai, make sure you arrive at Haleakala by 3pm. DO NOT MISS PIPIWAI trail. Possibly the highlight of Hana for me. It cannot be overstated how incredible Pipiwai is. Also- currently Wai’anapanapa requires 24 hour reservations to access the park. We skipped it but wouldn’t have had time for Pipiwai otherwise so if worked out for us. Overall Hana is an incredible experience and would do it again. Also don’t skip the Gypsy app! So worth it!
Red sands is trespassing with risking owner pressing charges koki is a public beach with red sand . Drones are not allowed in the parks just FYI. The reason you can’t get up to the 400 foot waterfall as rocks have fallen off of there killing people. Also same reason why the seven sacred pools has closed to the public people died multiple deaths at red sounds with people falling. Just want everyone to be careful Hana is beautiful but also you could lose your life there in six years we’ve had 19 people die in Hana.
Great video. Once you've come to the end fo the trip, do you turn around and go all the way around the eastern route again, or do you drive up the middle of maui back into Paia?
Yea you really only have the option to go back the same way you came which will give you some more time to see some of the stops “against the grain” of traffic. You could also go continue on the path and come out on the western coast of Maui, but I’m not too familiar with what the route would look like or if it’s even possible with a rental vehicle as most of rules against it.
Why ginger chews and the other thing you mentioned with it? Also we are staying at Sands of Kahana.. really want to take the kids to the black sand beach.. how far of a trip would that be? Where’s the banana bread stop at?
Beautiful video Lance. I had a quick question, are you allowed to use the drone? Along the route, especially at the black sand and red sand beaches? Again awesome video and thanks for the information.
Very best advice is to stay a night or two. It’s such a relaxing experience but ruined by the fear of driving that road back at night, not a place to rush through.
When I made this video, drone laws and regulations were still very new. I would recommend going to go to UAVCOACH.com and look at the most current Hawaii drone regulations as they are updated frequently!
Great video footages of the beautiful place Hana. There are some things I do not agree (personal preferences I guess), and some of my fav spots you missed :) but for the most part, your tips are right on :) Mahalo!
We are doing this soon. On the way out, the only worry is that while going to the vrbo in Hana, we have luggage. Should we stop on the way, or rush out to the house and drop off and then head back out? Thanks!
I would just drop it off on your way. It takes a while to get to Hana with how slow the roads will go. By the time you get back, you’ll be in the middle of traffic.
Great information! Awesome video! I’ve heard it’s good to start the Road to Hana from the opposite end. What do you think of that? Also any tips on how to drive on the actual road? I’ve heard there are rules to follow especially if you’re driving a large SUV. Thank you!!
I don’t know too much about doing the road in reverse. I know there’s a few videos out there recommending that option that should be a good source of knowledge. In regards to driving the road itself. I wouldn’t overthink it too much. Just take it at your own comfortable speed and be willing to allow cars to pass you often if you are holding them up. There were will tight spots throughout the drive, and the more attention you pay to the road, the less issues you’ll have navigating it. Just be patient!
Hi there! You forgot to mention that in order to visit red sand, you trespass on private land and park illegally. Also, there's a good possibility that your car gets broken into. Come to Maui but practice Aloha and keep it pono.
Victor after your post I did some research- we are visiting in March. I did not find info. that validates your comment. You can park legally and this site is on many guides without the private land trespass concept. It does say to be respectful- as all should throughout Hawaii. Please explain- I never want to disrespect others property.
@@jeninnehale1749 if you read the signs and behave pono, pass quietly with respects, *wear a mask* at the park and the public bathrooms (nearby) and *on the trail* until at/on the beach at least 15-20 feet from others, and it's okay. But some people get tickets cuz they don't pay attention to pono parking. I saw an officer ticketing last time I was out there, cuz people don't pay attention or presume there is no enforcement.
@@jeninnehale1749 did you make it last March? I can't recall what date they shut it all down to offislanders. It was so great to have the island to ourselves for awhile, until October-- but it hurt a lot of people who depend on the tourism industry. We are glad to have respectful people back.
@@jeninnehale1749 Victor is correct tho. It is a tresspass but generally no one is gonna make waves and stop you. If you are respectful. *WEAR MASKS*. Walk slowly, offer respectful deference. But someone might object if you try pass. Nevah know. And they have a right. So if someone tells you "no can" den *apologize* and *go* somewhere else. Plus, the trail is dangerous for people who aren't ourdoors savvy hikers, and can even be dangerous at spots for those who are. Years ago the trail was no go. New trail mo bettah. But not a sure thing. If you fall, the vacation is so ovah. There are a few legal places to park close enough, *and* there are several places close by that will get you a ticket or towed. If you leave valuables in your car, they might be stolen. Meth/ice is a big problem on Maui and there are addicts on many parts of the island (out in Hana too), who will not hesistate to exploit carelessness of visitors who leave things on the beach while swimming or who leave valuables in sight in cars. idk if they break windows to rummage if there appears to be nothing in car. Be smart and be discreet and stow things out of sight before you reach where you'll park for extended times, and use waterproof containers for take swimming with keys, phone, credit cards and IDs. No joke.
Going to visit in a couple weeks (Oct. 2019) really want to see waterfalls and the black sand beaches...we are only there 2.5 days, so not sure we want to do the entire road, but wondered if part of it is still worth it?? How far is the black sand beach from OGG?
2 hoursish. Took us 3 hours from Kihei to the furthest spot which is Pipiwai trail. Took us 2 hours 30 mins to Hana. We drove straight to Furthest spot first. I was on big island for 8 days and maui for 6 days and road to Hana imo was meh. The drive is long the drivers are irritating. People will stop in middle of road to catch a view ahead of you while cars are waiting at yields. Everyone seems to stop at the first spot and probably miss the good spots at the end. But I would no go again if I went back. Its what you like to do. If you like playing in big waves then go to big beach. If you like snorkeling then Go to Coral gardens or molikini crater. If you want to just swim pretty much any beach around kihei. Surfing then north shore by paia. Lahaina if you want super touristy and restaurants. I preferred the big island over maui tbh. The snorkeling with manta rays was great. The beach snorkeling is great there, and Volcano park was very good. The Puna trail to shipman's beach is better than Pipiwai trail. The trail is better for pipiwai but the hidden beach at the end of puna trail just spectacular. Less beaches on big island but I would say they are better imo.
I re-watched this several times and felt that I should leave a comment again. This is the best Road To Hana video I have seen on RUclips so far. You didn't cover everything but what you covered is great/enough. I like your style too - calm and not too many effects like other videos I see.

My sister is treating us (she and I) to a trip to Maui this October 2023. We are both in our 60s, and I recently had open heart surgery for a valve replacement. Oprah Winfrey and Carol Burnett live in Hana !
mike sutton im going there tomorrow
Oprah owns land but doesn't live there. Her houses are in Kula
Are we allowed to use drones on the road to Hanna
I believe you can fly drones if you pull off on the side of the road, but you cannot fly drones in any of the National or State park!
As a local who’s lived in Maui for over 20 years I have to say this is a very good video. It hits the main highlights of the road to Hana. Planning a trip to Maui soon and this video broke down exactly what you need to see and where they are located along the drive; great video!

How did you go all the way around? There is an area where the rental car is not allowed to go so we had to turn around and go back the way we went.

You could also go continue on the path and come out on the western coast of Maui, but I’m not too familiar with what the route would look like or if it’s even possible with a rental vehicle as most of rules against it.
Is the lake at the bottom of the Wailua Falls deep? Can people who don't know swimming jump in?
Why ginger chews and the other thing you mentioned with it? Also we are staying at Sands of Kahana.. really want to take the kids to the black sand beach.. how far of a trip would that be? Where’s the banana bread stop at?
Visited Maui in March 2020, this video really helped plan our Road to Hana adventure!
DONT WALK DOWN TO WALUIA FALLS I WAS THERE AND THE ROCKS WERE SO SLIPPERY DONT PUT YOURSELF IN A RISKY SITUATION LIKE THAT
Beautiful video Lance.
Great video. Well done, good camera work, very helpful. Thanks!
I live hāna
Hawaii most beautiful place on the entire 🌎
Great job and Great advice! Thank you!
My Great grama n family was born n raised in Hana, Hawaiian, Chinese
We are a family of six going. Will us older 60 years be able to go to these places?
Thanks for the information. Great drone shots. I suggest better quality audio for your narration though. You sound far away in a big room!
Yep def will do that the next time around... first time doing a vid like this so it was a learning experience!
I heard him perfectly!
Please, someone, tell me the starting song of this video.
My daughter wanted to know.

💊 to?
awesome video! tx Please share details about your house rental. How much per night? any housing tips?
very nice, we have something similar in Bali
Holy shit talk about trying to get someone to sponsor him
Excellent video and information. I have a question. Do you need a special permission to fly a drone on those beautiful places?
When I made this video, drone laws and regulations were still very new. I would recommend going to go to UAVCOACH.com and look at the most current Hawaii drone regulations as they are updated frequently!
Preparing my trip to Maui, thank you so much for this video, really helpful and we really appreciate!
Oh so much mahalos from my heart mahalo
Is the ginger good bcuz u WILL get nauseated?
Awesome video definitely a Best of 808
Great video. Watched some other couple that was cringe worry at best. I can tell you put time into this. Keep it up.
Appreciate that! I put a good amount of time into something I wished I could have watched before we went to visit , have an awesome trip out there!
lower the volume before going into this vid
Great video footages of the beautiful place Hana. There are some things I do not agree (personal preferences I guess), and some of my fav spots you missed :) but for the most part, your tips are right on :) Mahalo!
Visit Live Love Maui what slots he missed? Can you share a few? 🙏🏻
What are some of the spots? can you share them?
Thanks so much!
why you fly a drone in national park?
Love your video!! It inspired my trip to Maui/ my new Vlog! Thank you!
Great video! Thanks!
No joke.
Thank you so much! Very informative, and enticing!
Helped me in planning the trip. Thank you for sticking to the required details!
I have a very important question so I hope you can help is there a lot of gas stations on the road to Hana
No there are not very many gas stations on the road. You will find a few off the main road, but not many.
Thank you helped out alot
Thanks Lance ! Visiting Maui and Oahu coming May and this would surely help plan things out !
I rented a bmw X3 with pano sunroof that was great
This video is perfect...thank you!
this is so helpful. btw, where did you stay the other days beside the 2 nights in Hana. Were planning an 8 day trip to Maui. thanks
We stayed in wailea and loved it! We went and swam with the turtles in turtle cove and spent time on big beach. Definitely recommended!
