- Today I'm reacting to something new! A marching band, from the State of Ohio, who does a tribute to Rush! Amazing performance, I never saw that in my life!!! I did recognize my favorite intro (the Spirit of Radio) and YYZ, which I discover last week! ( • Video ). For this special occasion, I finally wear my Ohio State cap, and put on the Ohio flag on the wall! Enjoy!

Rush actually put this up on their official site and shouted out the band. Very cool.
Why were they doing a rush tribute? Was it to pay respects to Neil Peart?

@@gamexsimmonds3581 That's pretty much the reason why, yes. The percussion section was expanded by 20 toms and 20 extra cymbals just for this performance.

Ohio State University is well known for having one of the best marching bands in the world. Their precision is amazing.

Proof that people can create amazing things when they get together with a common purpose and play their part. Very impressive.
I was in my high school's marching band, and can tell you that it takes A LOT of practice to perform at the level you saw here. Not only does the band have to move with precision, but they have to do it while playing a musical instrument. At the college/university level, 25% of the band is replaced each year. Like the athletes, advanced skills must be proven in high school in order to have a shot at one of the openings. That means 3 or 4 years of marching/playing experience before they arrive at college/university. Then, the college freshmen must compete for a spot in the band. Those that make the cut will devote MANY hours to drills and rehearsals. It's a major commitment.

These kids are full time students who have to study and go to class like everyone else. Amazing dedication they have. You will also hear them refered to as TDBITL = The best damn band in the land.

I actually was at that game and got to see it in person.
The band practices 30 hours per week and puts together a new show like this each week during football season. The stadium is the 3rd largest in America and 5th in the World with a seating capacity of over 102,000.

Awesome!!! (Neil Peart was known for being a motorcycle enthusiast - riding from concert to concert and writing some great books about his adventures which is why the band formed the motorcycle after the announcer mentioned him). The synchronicity of the band on many levels is simply incredible. :0) 🐺

I was in my high school marching band for four years. Lots of summer and autumn early mornings practicing on a freshly-mown football field, with wet grass clippings clinging to your legs up to your knees. Helping the band director paint the lines on the field. Another hour or two per day practicing the music in the band hall.
Ok, now Frenchie, you are doing OHIO STATE. Great job.

Bonjour FrenchTastic! As someone who lives in Ohio I appreciate the love. I can tell you have good taste because I have that exact same hat! 😂 The Ohio State marching band is amazing! You should check out their halftime show from Wembley stadium in London or their tribute to Michael Jackson or there’s a show on Hollywood blockbuster’s. All incredible. Go Buckeyes!

@@danielmccormick3611 Oh, they're good, they are REALLY good. But so are bands like Texas A&M, U of M, Duke, Purdue, and many others. And don't get me wrong, Ohio State is exceptional and is consistently so. I believe Woody Hayes originally coined this expression. However, all the bands I noted, among a few others, can jockey for best each and every year, recognizing that the term originally applied to Ohio State.
Every year these hardworking band members are consistently working to bring this art to a new level and continue to amaze. This healthy competition is what makes all these schools present excellence and each of them are award winning marching bands that send shivers up and down my spine with emotion.
Each of the bands have a unique component of their music and showmanship, what I really enjoy about Ohio State is their tributes to mainstream music.
@@robbailey1237 But TBDBITL is consistently recognized as the gold standard for college marching bands. That's why they were the first band that the NFL flew over to London for one of their games at Wembley, and why they were chosen to lead the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2018. HBCU bands have a very different and spectacular style, so comparison with them is not appropriate.
I hope someday you can go to an actual college game and experience firsthand what you saw , but in person, and also experience the game , the food , fans , and tailgate parties. I know you would enjoy the whole experience immensely!!! . Loved your reaction. Great video!!!😎👍👍

It takes hours and hours and hours of practice I was in a marching band in college and I was in color guard which is twirling flags and rifles this band did not have that so I highly suggest you see it with the color guard. There yard markers on the field and markers that we know about but don't paint on the field that help us stay where we're supposed to be to make the formations and we all step off on the left foot first so there were always stepping together to the music. If you notice the drums always have a downbeat that's always when we're hitting the left foot.

These are all students, they put in hundreds of hours practicing, very cool tribute, and amazing coordination and team work
Hi Marie marching band is a great part of American culture. High schools and even junior high schools have marching bands even though their town is very very small. I was in a very small town and played in the marching band for our school. We always played at football games and were even in competitions with other schools. It is just a part of our culture and it is a lot of fun for geek people like me! I even did it for a living in the United States Army Field Band! Great video even though I am more of a fan of Indiana University! But Ohio State always has had a great program.

They rehease every day until game day or the competition they perform at many hours spent to perfect choreography and Musick
I haven’t seen any other members comment yet. We rehearse 2 hours each day M-F, then report to the stadium 6 Hours before kickoff on game day. Rehearsal generally doesn’t include time to memorize music, which could take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours each week.

I remember going to the Fiesta Bowl when Ohio State played Pitt in 1984 (Mike Tomczak was the QB then) & got to see Script Ohio for the 1st time in person. A thing of beauty.
They will do this program ONE time. Live at halftime of a game, and then do something different the following week.
That was really cool. Now I’m gonna have to look up the best marching band performances on RUclips, lol. That’s a really crisp cap too.
Props to the fan who sent you the Ohio State gear! We love our marching band! They spend all summer practicing for the fall football season. You can see many such videos on You Tube.....and, as a fan of BTS, I am excited to see many marching bands performing to their songs! I am in Columbus now, but I used to live in Cleveland where the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is located....so if you ever come to the States....come see Ohio!! ARMY grandma.

The one they do for Hollywood is another good one.
My brother was in the University of Notre Dame marching band many years ago. (Notre Dame is usually one of the elite college football teams in the country, although it's been decades since they won a national championship.) They practiced as much or nearly as much as the football team, 5-6 days per week. The band even has its own football field to practice on, separate from the practice field of the football team. I don't remember how large the band was then, but it currently has 380 members. There was an informal fraternity/sorority combo for each instrument. Every year he would need to leave home for a week after Christmas to travel to where the "Bowl Game" was being played. It was an enormous commitment.
The amazing part is these college bands learn a different halftime show every week
Every year over 300 musicians try out to be in the OSU band while only 225 make the band. Each row has 2 alternates and they have to challenge for a spot to march for each game, The number is limited to form Script Ohio.

It’s not as many hours as you might think. I live in Ohio, and my high school marching band, which I was in for 3 years, we were a copy of the Ohio State Marching band. They knew of us really well. Their nick name is TBDBITL, which stands for The Best Damn Band In The Land. When we should go to their stadium for a show, they called us TBDBITL. You just say all the letters without pronouncing that D. Kinda like TABITL.
Anyway, we would do a new show every week. Memorizing 3-4 songs, and all of the marching and position changes on the field. Basically a few hours a day for 3 days and we had it down. Every homecoming game, they would do a script OHIO. My school name was WEST, and we would do a script WEST. No other bands back then did what we did.

Thats how we roll here in ohio.I saw the band in the pumpkin show.Its a huge festival in ohio with pumpkins pushing 1500 pounds and about 250 food booths and amusement rides that runs for about 4 days.good times.

I know there are drum and bugle corps in Europe and they normally do field shows where they do marching formations while playing. Drum and Bugle Corps are also a huge summer activity in the US.

I so hope you visit the U.S. one day and see a major league baseball game, see a college football game, eat Southern Fried Chicken, jumbalaya, et tu fay, drink a mint julip, have pralines and Dutch Apple Pie, try Kentucky Bourbon at a distillery, see thoroughbreds on a farm, visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and witness buffalo, elk, wolves, bear and moose in Yellowstone, see the changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, attend a rodeo in maybe Cheyenne, Wyoming, see the Pacific ocean at San Diego and alligators on an airboat in the Everglades of Florida.

I grew up in Ohio. The OSU marching band is one of the prides of the state, regardless of which part of Ohio you're from.

As a Michigan fan I'm willing to acknowledge that The Ohio State band is in the top tier of college bands, along with Michigan, Texas A & M and some others. These bands work and practice as much as the team, and at least in Michigan, they're considered to be an important part of the team. Back about 10 years ago Michigan had an unfortunate choice for an athletic director that wanted to save money so he didn't want the band to travel with the team to a non-conference away game. The entire Michigan community was outraged and protested so much the incompetent athletic director had no choice but to send the band. That's how important they are to the fans and the team. The team doesn't go anywhere without the band! Needless to say, that guy got fired!

I have known many of the band members through the years and believe me , they work as hard as the athletes !! I'm a fan of university of Michigan which is Ohio state's most bitter football rival.but I do have to admit they have a hell of band👍👍👍 you should check out OSU band doing"script Ohio"
