In addition to playing the instruments, the students have to memorize their positions to know when and where to stand, and they only have a week to master the routine. Our colleges/universities have marching bands that perform at halftime in every game. Ohio State has other videos: Top Gun, Wembley performance a tribute to England, and a few more. Another outstanding marching band is Texas A&M Fightin' Aggies. It's very different than Ohio State because they do military formations that will AMAZE you. MUST SEE! Enjoy!

They are all students at the university. They are not paid. Almost all High Schools and Colleges have Marching Bands and do Field Shows at half time at their home football games. And you do a new show for each game so you usually only have a week to do your studies/homework got school and learn your music and positions on the field for the halftime shows each week. Love the marching bands, they make the game great and get the crowd fired up before the game, during the game and at halftime. ❤

But I NEVER understood the purpose of "THE" in front of it, as if there are NUMEROUS OHIO STATE UNIVERSITIES out there. THAT is the only time you use "THE" in front of a name that has many others out in the world with the same name, to distinguish the ONE that is FAMOUS from others of the same name, who are NOT. Like there are a lot of men out there with the name "Robin Williams" (could be a male or female normal everyday citizen, since Robin is used as a first name for both boys AND girls) SO if someone is talking about a person named "Robin Williams" that they know, the other person might think he or she is talking about the famous comedian/actor "Robin Williams" and might say, are you talking about "THE Robin Williams" and the other person could say, "Oh no, it's just a guy I went to school with, it's NOT "THE" Robin Williams" I don't see other universities putting "THE" in front of their names because usually there IS NO OTHER UNIVERSITIES or COLLEGES that have the very same name. Just seems a little arrogant or elitist to me, and not necessary.

A lot of court cases happened because of a lot of animosity between them, so they started using the word "The" because of that. I know I'm late ;) But just found you - subbed up...
Construction of Ohio State Stadium began in 1921, and it came with a price tag of $1.34 million, which, when adjusted for inflation, equals about $23.4 million today. At its inception, it could hold 66,210 fans, making it a significant sports venue for the time.
Over the years, Ohio Stadium evolved. It expanded its seating capacity, reaching 102,329 in 2007 after various renovations. Beyond football, the stadium has hosted track and field events and world-famous concerts, including U2 and The Rolling Stones performances.
This was approximately 30 hours work of the students... age 18-28? Over 200 of them... I'm not certain which year they did this... so... probably about 220 or so.
The "flying thing" is I think a Gryphon? w/e the Gryphondor's (sp?) mascot was in the Harry Potter movie(s) Owl? I'm not a HP fan, I recognized the music...
You missed 'him' "eating" the Tuba player ;) that's why the t-rex opened his mouth ;)
They do not call "us" (OSU) The Best Damn Band In The Land for nothing (us used extremely loosely ;) - Ohioan here). TBDBITL.
We have a FEW more folks than the UK, that's likely why we have all this 'stuff' - the 330+Million ppl - gotta keep us entertained & not making mischief ;)

The movies they are paying tribute to are:
Superman (logo & Superman saving a building about to collapse)
Lord of the Rings (The one ring & the eye of Sauron)
Harry Potter (logo & Harry flying on a broomstick, catching the Golden Snitch)
Jurrasic Park (T-rex walking & eating someone from the rival team, Michigan State)
Pirates of the Caribbean (Ohio State ship sinking Michigan's ship then the Skull & Cross bones symbol)
Great reaction but wow, you really need to watch more movies, as some of the ones shown here are among the greatest films ever created, especially The Lord of the Rings trilogy & the Harry Potter franchise... I agree with you that we need to stop paying millions of $$$ to egotistical celebrities for Super Bowl & just have several college marching bands do the half-time show instead - much more entertaining! 😃

How I learned to march (not as well) in bands like this:
    1. You learn to manage the size of your stride to cover specific distances in a specific number of steps. For example, commonly it will take exactly 8 steps to get from one of those vertical lines to the next line. You are also taught steps that enable you to move around without disrupting your playing.
    2. You have to play all your music correctly from memory.
    3. To learn a routine, every member of the band is given specific instructions on exactly where they are supposed to be at certain points in the music, and also instructions on how to get there. You may have a section leader or something like that who is responsible for guiding 5-10 other members. So it will be something like "Start at the 50-yard line 5 standard steps in from the sideline, move backwards and to your left in 8 beats of music to halfway to the next yard line and 7 standard steps from the sideline". Of course, there's a shorthand for all of this, but that's the idea.
    4. Once you know everything you're supposed to be doing, you have to know how that fits into what everyone else is doing, so that the lines look straight or smooth as intended. The whole thing requires military precision, and indeed some of it came out of military marching traditions.

Ok so i did this in highschool its not as complex as you think its basically everone has a mark and is expected to hit their mark in time with the count. Honestly keeping the count is the most important part other wise you risk running into each other. But yes lots of practice at my school in 07 we started in summer did 3 weeks of 6 hr day practice. Then when school started it was practice 2× a week perform on friday halftime and then saturday was our competition. Where it would be a tournament of 20+ bands competing for a trophy. So as much as this is a perfomance for them its probably just a practice for when they compete.

The superbowl performers don't get paid. In fact, most of them use their own money to help create the set and performance that they want. The marching band performers, as well as the color gaurd performers, practice alot to give us these performances. Every single member is a student at the high school or college/ university that they are performing for. The performances are very cool to see.

    BANGSO, capacity = 102,780, and you're right; it's a halftime show.
Some explanation is needed here: I trust you noticed the phone booth; in the black & white days, Superman changed in one, whereas today, he spins.
The band is composed 100% of students, and it's possible to get a scholarship to OSU via this route. However, it's one of the most difficult to get in the country. They have 5 or 6 home games each season, and during that week beforehand, they spend more time on the field than the football team.
Mt. Doom indicates it's Harry Potter.
You were correct on #3. In case you didn't get it, at around 9:07, the T Rex opened his mouth, and swallowed someone--specifically someone from the other team, namely, U. of Michigan; then a little later, he spit out the guy's helmet at 9:49. Hilarious!
Toward the end of Pirates of the Caribbean, the pirate face got a bandana.
To get a scholarship to play in this band is one of the most difficult of any scholarship to win for any reason in the USA.
