"[WTF], I don't even know what I'm looking at!" That's exactly what John Carpenter wanted. He didn't want an alien that looked like a man in a suit, he wanted something real. Audiences were totally unprepared for that.
Bueno "Real" tampoco es que tengamos un punto de comparación, simplemente el optó por una idea totalmente diferente y bastante acertada para lo que el quería lograr
A question I have always had about this movie. If you become infected with _The Thing_, and you are a perfect copy of someone. Do you *know* that you are a thing? It's such a great movie. One of the best horrors ever put to film. And one of the very few Lovecraftian-esque movies that was successful.
@@TSotPI think the guy that played Norris said he portrayed him as knowing there was something wrong with him in certain scenes to imply he subconsciously knew he might be a Thing. So maybe they were aware subconsciously.
John Carpenters "The Thing" is one of the greatest films ever made. Not just horror, Great films overall...PERIOD. You feel the closed-in impending doom throughout the entire film. Carpenter found a way to make you cold and isolated in your own damn living room. He made you claustrophobic, he made you fear needles, he made you fear exploring space. What a fucking genius move this film was. Carpenter made Halloween 1 & 2 (1978-1981) , Escape From New York (1981) , The Fog (1980), Christine (1983), Prince of Darkness (1987), They Live (1988), In The Mouth of Madness (1994), Escape From LA (1996), as well as his Showtime TV show "Body Bags" consisting of 3 unconnected horror stories told over 3 nights. The man is a fucking genius and don't get me started on his musical stuff. He created the legendary "Theme Song from Halloween 1978".
June 26th 1982, I was 14 years old and me and some friends went and watched balde runner for the first time and then we went and saw this for the first time. Best movie day ever.
Good Halloween reaction, I remember seeing this for the first time and this was the scene where shit got real. The testing of the blood was another awesome scene
The scary part is, this whole incident I don't think was part of the Thing's plan. It assimilated Palmer and Norris because they were well out of the way of the rest of the staff, so it could work in three place at once and no one would be the wiser. Once it's in the kennel, all the other dogs know it's not a real dog, so the Thing defends itself, and in doing so, the entire base is now aware it's there.
It shouldn't have though. It's the only plot hole. Assimilating a dog should have definitely taught it all dog behavior. You couldn't tell Norris was a thing, how would the dogs know it wasn't a dog.
The dogs apparently didn't know. They were unperturbed when the Thing entered and lay down among them. It was only when it started to make that unnatural heavy breathing sound that the dogs started acting spooked. Once it was alone with the dogs, the Thing tried to assimilate them. More bodies means more chances for survival.
Everyone is "the dogs, the dogs". When I first saw this when it first came out having just turned 13, I wasn't saying "the dogs, the dogs" I was saying "I want to see what this thing looks like!" And I wasn't disappointed. Love your reactions and I'm jealous in a good way that you get to experience these films for the first time. Have a great day and keep experiencing all the great films.
I love how every reaction channel was so sympathetic to that damn dog that they didn't even question on to why people were trying to kill it, or where they were or what year it was... am like people.. you do reactions for a living but you can't remember that it tells you in the first 5 minutes in the film that its in Antarctica and its 1982 and plus when I watched this for the first time I was wondering why the Norwegians were trying to kill the dog so I didn't trust it. So it gives me a big smile when they see what the dog actually is and they change there tune pretty quick haha. Also side note, I will give Norwegians some slack cause for one dudes in a helicopter moving around with thick gloves on and he's trying to shoot a fast, small moving target these guys aren't soldiers there mostly researchers and other non combatants but I've done boar hunting on a helicopter before and did I shoot anything maybe three but the rest got away and spent more ammo then am proud of missing a lot cause its pretty hard to shoot something that small and fast moving on a heil but the grenade part was pretty stupid but pretty sure it slipped out of his hand cause of the glove.
I am commenting before I watch this clip... I feel like this is going to be one of the greatest things I've ever seen in life. Someone is going to cry hard, I can't wait.

There was a lot of urgency on display, but it wasn't always focused. Mac ending up taking the lead because he's tough, smart, and resourceful. But the first one to recognize the magnitude of the threat was Blair. If he hadn't destroyed all the transportation and communication equipment, the Thing would almost certainly have escaped Antarctica and doomed the human race.
@@morbidangel2424 But this isn't the only example.... I know people who don't flinch at the "starving kids" commercials, but show a dog and they have to turn the channel. And, in an rpg, the GM drew a bunch of stick figures on the battlefield of all the dead people. One didn't look right, so we asked. "It's a dog." The mood turned suddenly somber. Nevermind the 50 dead people strewn about...
I know it was for the intent for building tension, but it doesn't make sense how slow the dog handler dragged his ass to the kennel - you'd think with his love of the dogs, he'd fucking run to them howling!
"What was that liquid shit that the thing was spitting at him? " It might be acid or toxic waste because the dog that was its target got turned into a very gross brown weak and half infected dog that was lying on the ground and was infecter with red tendrills two seconds later
Love this movie, and I'm mad that the Prequel (The Thing 2011) was shot entirely with practical effects (like this movie, puppets and other things) and the test audience didn't care for it so they used CGI over the entire movie which made it terrible.
“The Thing” is suspicion, mistrust, and paranoia personified! It is the story of desperate men, isolated and hopelessly trapped in the middle of nowhere, caught up in a terrifying life-and-death battle with an inhuman enemy, in which the fate of the entire world hangs in the balance. What would you do?

Sort of tangent, but in the autopsy scene, Wilford Brimley's gasps and gags weren't acting, as the prop had chemicals that made it stink.

"Messed up Old Yeller" is hilarious! 😂
"Mac wants the flamethrower!" "Mac wants the WHAT?" So happy I've met those two guys, plus the guy who played Windows!

Best dog acting in cinema history

Awesome! So many more from this movie alone. Although id love to see a forrest gump one or shawshank redemption

Natalie's Nos in the background of everyone's commentary is friggin HILARIOUS 😂😂
"Man is the warmest place to hide".
these are great (work and content) because even in an enthusiastic full house live audience people don't usually let out their innermost inner dialog
yeah, could you imagine sitting beside Natalie when she SCREAMED "Burn it! Childs! WTF!!"? geezus 🤣
The absolute peak of physical special effects, Rob Bottin set a standard that still hasn't been topped.

The mechanical special effects master Rob Bottin did such a great job on this film. No CGI. All real practical effects shot on film.
There was stop-motion animation used as well at various times, but that would still count as a practical effect.
