My mother, who immigrated to the USA in the 50's, was born in Ballyjamesduff. She went to Ramonen School. I recently sent her and her sister's cremains home to be buried in the family plot at Kildoragh Church. My cousin David is the caretaker and owns the family farms in Claudia. I visited the relatives in Ireland and Ballyjamesduff for the first time in 1977. I was thrilled to find this great song!!! My mother would have loved it!.
My grandmother, Becky O'Reilly, wanted to hear this song as she was in the hospital knowing she didn't have much time left. She said it was the first Irish song she ever heard. At 78 years young she still knew every word. I could see She was ready to go home and see everyone she loved who passed before her.
Lovely ballad composed by Percy French (who also composed The Mountains of Mourne) and many many other ballads. Paddy got mixed up in the verses here..If you search on RUclips..You'll find the full song...
_I first heard Paddy singing in Liberty Hall, Dublin on the the Friday Night concerts around 1967/68. He always brought the house down. Those were days of roses and another of his favorites was "Deportees". I still haven't grown up and long for those beautiful nights..._
This was another of my late mother's favourite songs. She had dementia, but was singing up to a week or so before she passed away. She came from Cavan, not Ballyjamesduff, but knew the place, which I also visited with her over 10 years ago.I always think of her when I hear any of those songs she used to sing.
I learned this song, literally, on my father's knee when I was five years old and we sang it together at every family function. That grand ol' Irishman is long gone, but his whispers still come over the sea ... to me. Merry Christmas, Dad. I love and miss you always. Thank you for being such a dear and loving father.
Love this song...was sorry I didn't get to Ballyjamesduff when I was so close in '14. I love to sing along on this one...not sure it enhances the song, LOL, but I do it anyway!
This song was always played at family get togethers at the end of the evening and our Pere ( grandfather ) this was his song. Paddy Reilly definitely sang the ultimate version
Some of my happiest memories were drinking Guinness in the Dubliner on Capitol Hill, when Paddy was in town. Sundays were best, when there would only be six or seven people who would show up just to hang out with Paddy. Ah, but we were all younger then.
In the first Film Lead Joan Collins got was in Blue Lagoon . This was sung by Dublin Actor *Noel Purcell * Noel was a great Character Actor and sung many great songs e/g Dublin on a Sunny Sunday Morning*
I enjoy the old songs of Ireland sometimes referred to as rebel songs. My DNA shows me as 98% Irish and 2% something else which is meaningless in the total scheme of things. My dad's family was from the County Monaghan and mother's family arrived in this neck of the wood from the County Cork.
Interesting, I'll say to my mother, I never really did find a lot out about it, I just remember on a holiday once in an irish bar, my mum said that she was a relation.
My uncle was killed in a tank at D day 6 days into the offense Irish guards Atomsed A Ballyclare man his brother was in the tank behind ULSTER prods he was atomized RIP the tank was called Ballyjamesduff
I got here because I was watching a tv programme about the SAS, the Captain must have been from Ireland, apparently he parachuted in with a small gramophone strapped to his leg and this record with him, that is class. I wish I could rememeber his name , he should have won the Victoria cross for bravery but the SAS were still not fully recognised at that point. My sister in law's dad was also called Paddy Reilly and recently passed away, the service ended with 'Danny boy', brought back memories of the Barry Mguigan fights, his dad would sing it. I hope the Irish can forgive us for the terrible troubles over the years . RIP to all of the above.
percy french and paddy reilly the paddy hes is on about in the song, moved to england for work, percy miss his coach driver so much he wrote the song come back paddy to ballyjamesduff,if u google balljamesduff u mite see a man sittin on a stone seat thats percy french
They sing this in Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party (that's how I came across the song), and it contributes beautifully to the tone of the play. Creepy.
The song was written by Percy French. Hence the name of the Hotel on main street Ballyjamesduff County Cavan. Yes legend has it Paddy Reilly went to Scotland.
enyrb Could you store 5000 songs in your head? Give Paddy a break. He's class saw him live numerous times and i hope see him numerous times again. Gon yersel Paddy!!!
Did'nt anyone notice he missed the first verse ?????? " The Garden Of Eden has vanished they say .. but i know the lie of it still.. Just turn to the left at the bridge of Finea and stop when half way to Cootehill " Shame he missed this as he sings it very well !
You know, I am really unsure how to put this, but, if my mother is to be right, I am paddy reilly's great great (dont know how many times lol, am 18 if that helps), grand son. Anyone know how I can find out more about the song n stuff. I mean, he is my, grandad.....
thats weird, cause im a not too far off relation of paddy reilly. I still live in BJD. my mothers maiden name is reilly and me gran is still alive. she tells me i am a great great great grandson of paddy.
He is singing a song written by Percy French many years ago, about a man from the area of Ballyjamesduff, (Paddy Reilly) who acted as a Jarvy (coach driver) for Percy French. Type in Percy French statue, and you will be able to read this history.

😢😢 this tune and words 😢😢❤❤

If she knew every word it's more than this singer did - I like the Dubliners but he mutilated this one.
Voix exceptionnelle et puissante pour un talent unique toujours aux rdv pour de belles chansons
Lovely song great singer my mother sang this song long time ago when I lived in Antrim N Ireland may she Rip 🙋❤💚

Some of my happiest memories were drinking Guinness in the Dubliner on Capitol Hill, when Paddy was in town. Sundays were best, when there would only be six or seven people who would show up just to hang out with Paddy. Ah, but we were all younger then.

He is singing a song written by Percy French many years ago, about a man from the area of Ballyjamesduff, (Paddy Reilly) who acted as a Jarvy (coach driver) for Percy French. Type in Percy French statue, and you will be able to read this history.
,,the hell,, is a bit unkind for as the other post shows it,s YOU who havent got the facts...
