Think you answered exactly why every day people don't want to show their homes. Who wants a bunch of strangers judging a place that's supposed to give you peace?
As someone who's repaired pallets as a job, I have never once seen someone break down a pallet properly!! ;P With this pallet you would pry off the bottom three boards, then use a hammer to knock off the bearers from the top boards, easy and quick.
I made a custom fork for busting slats off pallets. It's about a foot long piece of 3" C channel with some angle feet welded to the legs. I get that fork up under a slat resting on a stringer then give it a crack with a big hammer. It pops the deck boards right off. I kept thinking how I could get a hammer shot inside the pallet. Well that fork does just that.
Kept watching the video, kept getting reminded of that one YT content creator who built an off-grid cabin (complete with stove inside) using free pallets of wood. Took him a few months. But it looked good. Even had a bed inside. Support for the bed made from pallets.... So, guess that's the next project. Only instead of a cabin for one, a school house for orphans. An edumacation is important. 🙂
That table was awesome! I really liked the pattern on the top. Very nice work from the master. You might name the Planer “The Big Bite”. That thing is cool.
You could have just stacked the panels @2:25, glued them together and polished it up to make a decent coffee table Ya'll going way above and beyond for these projects and I love it 😆
I used to build and repair pallets for a bit. You made it harder by cutting the boards before using the bar, honestly. When we used to pull them off we'd use a similar hoof shaped crowbar, start on the center stringer then pop the outer two just the same. The boards pushing on the stringers gave leverage you lost by cutting them down. At least in my memory it was easier lol
7:16 - did you know, the manufacturer of that particular power tool gives you a shield to use with the tool when it's on. It's not only to minimize the amount of splinters shooting at your eyes but also to protect you in case the disc breaks and takes out an eye or breaks into your skull. Don't google any such accidents, but there are quite many of them.
That's huge; you probably could have sole that table for...ALOT, but instead you gave it to a subscriber, much respect John. I was think of a name for the planer; JANE-JANE THE PLANer.
I made one, only ONE nice thing with pallet wood. I will never do it again..the wood is simply NOT free at all. It takes so much time to reclaim. First you need to cut the wood or pry it off. If you want full boards you need to drill out the nail holes even if you've priced out all the nails because the ring shank nails spin when they go in and can leave metal in the wood. Then You need to glue up the pieces laminated after jointing and planing because they get too thin to use for anything... Then you have to joint and plane again after glue up. It takes SO MUCH TIME. Not free. Go to a professional grade hardwood store and buy the real stuff for less time and ultimately, money. Just my two cents.
use a Sawzall with a 12" metal blade and just cut the nails to release the slats from the frame wood. Simple matter of punching the head of the nail out of the slat wood. Depending on application you'll have much longer wood available for your project.
I've broken down a lot of pallets. A reciprocating saw was my first guess. So I did that initially. It would split the slats. A circular saw works far cleaner and easier for cutting off those end stringers. So John had that part right. You still can't pry those nails out though. They got shot in so they have to get shot out. I made a custom steel fork for slamming them out.
Great looking finished product John. Would you supply some model info on the 3M respirator/face shield you were wearing when you took the table to Kutzall hell? Looked like a powered respirator.
I know it has been a while since this video was made but I build stuff out of pallets too. Love the table was awesome. How is moisture levels in those pallets? And could it be a concern for me?
I’ve been working with pallets for a few years and there have only been a handful of pieces I’ve sold. I make all my stuff for myself or to give away to friends and family. Unless you’re a pro, it’s really difficult to do this kind of work and actually make money that equals to the time you put in on these projects, so I take pleasure in doing something nice for someone, like friends and family, I enjoy doing it, and others do for me as well. So my advice is to not get caught up in the money. Just enjoy yourself and get creative.
You can zip the nails off the back using a sawzall then take a nail punch the the holes on the back of the boards way easier than trying to nail pull the boards off. You get longer usable boards and the nail holes look kinda cool.
My wife worked for a Pharmacist and he did wood working on the side and as a wedding gift he made us shapes of the states we're from. I found a pallet behind a dumpster from my college I was attending and he made them for free. Those have always been on our walls for rustic decore

The table was too small for my house, but if it was twice the size, and you shipped it to California, I’d buy it. It turned out to be a great looking table! And, the placement in it at your buddies house, was brilliant as it actually looked like an expensive table, and nobody would believe it was pallet wood. It would be cool if you designed it so the top opened.
